I did just that about 25 years ago. Took apart a 3/8" ratchet and lost either a ball or a spring. Took it back to the sears mail order store and said it doesn't work. Two weeks later I had a new ratchet!

Yes, and it was a "shady" thing to do twenty five years ago too. You lost the ball bearing due to your own ineptness, and Sears gave you a new ratchet because you lied about it.

Absolutely nothing in the world shady in any way. Sears has the parts there for you as good customer service. The guy who will repair it for you is paid to do it. If you didn't get his help, he wouldn't have a job.
Someone gets it.
I would think most people get it. I just picked up a ratchet from Sears about three hours ago. Right on the card it says that "if this Craftsman hand tool ever fails to provide complete satisfaction, it will be repaired or replaced free of charge." Doesn't mention anything about workmanship or material defects or losing a bearing or how far it may or may not have rolled. Most people at one point or another have been that guy on the other side of the counter dealing with customers. It's not (typically) meant to be malicious nor anyone's fault. It's a warranty and that's what warranties are for.
I picked up some ball bearings at my local Ace Hardware for $.17ea...
Good as new!
Thanks all for your help!
