So I have an actual exhaust hose, same as used in car dealerships, and I use it often while working in the garage by just openeing the door puttin an end outside. well as cold as it is now, opening the door, even 3.5"s just ot put the hose out lets in way too much cold air. I want to put a port through the door, they are old wooden doors. I've seen real ports and they are expensive. I'm cusious could I use a dryer vent? or would that pose a fire hazzard?

They're only around $40-$50 brand new (proper exhaust ports).
Worth it in my opinion for a nice clean install with a secure flap, and all aluminium.
Once you cut the hole its permanent though!:)

I could be wrong, but couldn't you just cut a hole the size of your hose into whatever surface (door, wall, etc.) and use a cover when not used. For example if you want this in you garage overhead door, you can put a 3.5" hole about 1/3 way up the bottom panel, and they on the inside of the door attach a small structure to keep a cover plate on when not using the hose, kinda like the standard pet door type thing...

kinda like making you own version of something like this, but just the size of your exhaust tube?

FWIW, with my metal building, I don't put these ports in the door, but in the building wall next to the door. That way I don't accidentally try to open the door with the hose still attached.

I'm planning on building a shop in the spring, and had never though of putting one of these in, but after seeing this thread, I think I definitely will, and in the wall like you mentioned as well.

Thanks for th einfo yall. Very helpful.

Joe, I did a google search before posting but everything I was finding was 455+. I like the $25 option.

KANSASBOY, thanks for the link, I'll consider that one too.

nehog, I would prefer to go through the wall with it, but it's a very old detached garage that is block with the orignal wooden doors. So it would just be much easier to go through the door.

These are INDESPENSIBLE!! I'm not sure why they are not put into all out garages and shops as a matter of course - like 220V welder plus, compressors, OH fans, T8 lights!!

Either eBay or if you want check out Ryder Fleet Services. (Google 'em, I don't have their web site URL handy) I get a lot of that stuff from them, they are commercial but will sell to you if you wish to setup an account.

I appreciate all of the info.

So what you guys are saying is that all a homeowner really needs is some tubing (still unsure of the temp rating--they come in different ratings), a 2-into-1 joint, the vent door and I'm set?

Is a fan necessary for a level or downhill run of no more than about six feet? Are fans only necessary in updraft and shop applications?
