The last week or so has been good.

Free from my old job.

From the Gearwrench deal thread.

Got a cheap set of axle sockets. It really got me annoyed when I couldn't do wheel bearings on my GF's car without them.

Walked across the street to the mall at lunch to get a sweater, and of course I couldn't resist stopping in Sears for a couple of US-made Craftsman items.

First up is a 4-inch WF adjustable wrench, along with a cotter pin pick. I have maybe a dozen picks but I keep breaking the tip off my Mayhew 90 degree one with cotter pins, hopefully this one is more resilient steel.

More arrivals..

VW Rivet tool, with special long-nose rivet dies (?) for reccessed rivets in convertible roofs and upholstery.

Hazet/VW tool set for shock absorber nuts, sockets with pass-through counterhold tools to hold the shock piston while loosening/tightening the nuts.

VW/AMP terminal crimping pliers from a friend. He's had these for 15+ years, no longer uses them and gave them to me for my crimping pliers collection.

Knipex crimping pliers for 2.8mm & 4.8mm terminals. Bought the wrong ones. Have a set for 6.3mm terminals on order..

Various new old stock Hazet special tools. Sensor sockets, headbolt socket, seatbelt bolt socket, diesel fuel line wrenches, deep universal sockets, VW-Audi ECU box socket, long 5mm hex driver, T45 universal Torx driver and special M12 triple square driveshaft bolt wrench.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand a VW-Audi VAS5051 main dealer diag machine.

There's some other stuff laying around that arrived the other day too.

 Very Nice. I have VCDS, but never got to lay hands on a VAS5051.

Drooling over the Hazet stuff too! And people think Snap-on is high dollar! lol…

Ah.. I couldn't think of the proper name for that "cotter pin puller" the other day. All I could come up with was radiator hose pick, but that didn't pull up the right image.

That's a steal. Retail is over $600 here.

Laptop + VCDS + a good amp clamp and meter, and it renders that box useless.

Yep, it popped up on my eBay recommendations a few minutes after it was listed. £85 buy it now, had it that very second. Couldn't believe my luck! Then looked at the seller's other items, and there was that riveter set for £25.

As i said, we'll disagree on that. I find it very useful on some of the in-depth electrical work i do. I'm still working on my electrics skills and it's nice to use this and follow its procedure to get a definitive answer. (Although it did mis-daignose an ABS fault once.)

I don't use it often, but when i do need it it's well worth having. What works for me and what works for you will be different, everyone has their own preference. :)

(Also when using it peolpe can't argue with your diagnosis. If you use a manufacturer machine, and follow its procedure and it gives you a diagnosis then you've done it all as the manufacturer specifies.)

I have VCDS 11.11 as well and use that most of the time, but this comes out on special occasions for problem cars. It's a good machine and nice to have and use, but it's really slow.

Here in Europe Hazet is often cheaper. I paid very little for those Hazet tools, all brand new. Most were in the $10-15 range. A bit of hunting paid off. :)

I've spent so much on tools that at this point i don't worry about the cost, i just wait until i can afford them.

Where did you pick this up?? My buddy's vw/audi shop could us this.

It came off eBay. You can buy it through any VW/Audi dealer quoting the tool/part number T10001 or buy it through a Hazet dealer using their part number of 4910/13.

This is the Hazet seller i use the most. http://www.tbs-aachen.de/Hazet/chas...Shock_Absorber_Tool_Assortment_i3094_6464.htm

Fellow member jensputzier is also a Hazet dealer, so worth contacting him too. :)

Recently acquired a dedicated small 120sqm warehouse for my man-cave. First time I've had home and where I work on toys separate, so I've now had the need to duplicate tools so I can keep stuff at home and cave without needing to keep swapping tools (or more accurately forgetting tools) between locations. Home and the cave are 7km apart, so it isn't a simple stroll.

Anyway, ordered before Christmas and arrived this week:

I'm in Australia so I went with a common mid-brand here. It's a 182 piece set that rapidly speeds up duplication of the essentials and gives me storage too: https://www.kincrome.com.au/product/21032/apprentice-tool-workshop-182-piece-metric-and-imperial-1~4~-3~8-and-1~2-square-drive

Not the greatest of quality but for $100 and with a 3 year warranty I figured they'd be handy for around the house. The drill will be a nice replacement for the tiny one I use now. Downside to the kit is only one battery.

Oh no doubt. Far be it for me to knock anyone's preferred tools. Just, be leary of it. I worked for VW for 15 years, and I've been forced to use this machine and every iteration of it...GFF is wrong more often than not. Some of the preset measurements are nice when scoping components, but I wouldn't trust it much further than that.

New Larry Light 2. Bought it because of mention of it on another thread. I don't think I have a need for the laser. The LED light is almost too bright. It hurts my eyes to look at it.*

*Yes, I know: don't look at it stupid! But when I'm under the dash of my car and the light slips and shines right in my face, well, that will hurt just as much!

Yes I have a crimper like that. The prices are all over the place for that style. Somebody ought to start a show us your crimpers thread. I have a small fortune ******* in crimpers.

:)

My friend who gave it to me worked for VW for 16 years and Audi for 6 years, and shares a similar view to yours on the 5051. I find in almost all cases of in-depth diag Vag-Com, my meter and a wiring diagram will prove successful. There are just time when i don't know exactly what process i need to follow or what readings i need to look for and the 5051 comes into its own.

It did cause trouble with a friend's car, ABS fault came up as a problem with the pump motor. Did all the GFF and it determined the pump was at fault. Replaced it and same issue with same code. Did my own diag and found that the fuse holder had burned contacts and there was no live feed to the pump motor. Replaced that and all was fine.

Other than that it hasn't let me down.

Good idea. I have a little colelction of them that i'm building up. I think i'm up to 10 sets of crimping pliers now.

How is the cordless ratchet treating you? I've been curious about those for a while now.

Finally got all my purchases I've made over the holidays together. I did a fair amount of traveling so I haven't been home for almost 2 months.

Anyway some NOS Craftsman USA wrenches and bottle openers. (I already had a set of bottle openers but got a few more as backups ;) )
2it4k1.jpg

A bunch of screwdrivers and such. The Fullers are made in Canada except for the breaker which is Taiwan. My favorite tape measure for work (do lots of center points and this make it easy for me because math isn't my best subject). Enderes and Do It Best screwdriver (USA), Great Neck tack lifter (USA), and the Pratt-Read Super Stubby's (USA). I haven't seen those before and my Dad said he liked them so I picked them up. Craftsman tack hammer and punch/chisel set

I'm always looking for a better bit driver, so when I saw this at Lee Valley I decided to give it a go. It is a Rolgear gearless ratcheting bit driver. It isn't a brand I've ever heard of before, but it is made in Canada. I'm not sure that I would trust this to remove larger seized screws, but the action on it is silent and super smooth. There is almost no resistance when you turn it. I haven't seen one of these on the forum here before, so I figured some of you might find it interesting.

Interesting. Looks like they sort of copied the instinct handle design. Also, not sure if I have seen a ratcheting bit driver with a hex bolster before.

I went to Menard's today to spend my $150 in gift cards that I got for Christmas. I've been trying to decide what to get and basically had a list of small stuff to buy then I saw an informercial the other morning for Kreg. It's something I had thought about buying but I didn't want to fork over the money for a set. We also stopped by Sears and I picked up a couple of their 12" utility boxes.

The nice thing about getting gift cards is, it allows you to buy something that you normally wouldn't buy for yourself.

Got the launch scanner from my Mac rep. I'm impressed with it so far. Reads well and the live data is great. Also much faster than the shop's Autel.
