OK finally got pics! so you don't have to roll back a page or two:

Candy-Otto/Cincinatti Lathe and Tool Co. 18" "Royal" Drill press.

406 lbs with (factory) motor, the 1" thick table plate was another 50...

:3gears:Drove 2 hr's round trip, including the buy process, and paid $125 :rocker:
(I sold my old Taiwan DP a year ago for about that...)

The table top is pristine other than the usual rust, no biggie there:

The 1" thick Top some bright boy added was clearly sacrificial:

The Table lifter, I need to mess with the bottom of the gear rack a bit. and I want to find another gear rack and control gears, and the head can also be cranked down, then up...

attachment.php

The junker (for this DP) motor, 1/3 HP and it is missing the 8 sheave pulley. Plan is to move the Treadmill motor from my Rockwell to this one and be done.

attachment.php

The chuck may not be salvageable, the spindle taper is big, probably MT3, but I need to verify.

The lump towards the back is the housing for the head crank assembly/gears and rack.

The Owner did not know a brand, and had picked it up from a freind's rental. the add let it slide under the radar I think...

Yes it is, and it may have a S/N buried under all that paint. (I'm seeing a part of a stamped #) I'm starting with paper towel soaked in SG there, to see if I can strip the orange layer off without taking the MFG paint...

The manual says the SN is on top of the main head near the post, but if it is the paint has it well hidden. This junk is THICK!

Real nice DP Outlaw, too bad about the motor and pulley but at least you got a table lift and pristine table!! The integral head lift is ultra cool, wonder how hard it will be to find/make the parts for it. Let me know if it's a MT3, I think I have some MT3 to MT2 adapters, I need to check and see.

Yep confirmed, #3 MT, amazingly I even got the chuck freed up, and while it certainly needs taken apart and completely cleaned up, its spins amazingly smooth!

Jacobs #3A 1/8 - 5/8 cap.

Great catch Outlaw, You will love that press once you get her cleaned up and purring...
I picked mine up while back from a local auction because I couldn't watch it go to a scrapper. PO had done a nice update on it and it needed nothing.
As Found.JPG
I was lucky. Great old machine.
Under all that paint, you should see a label something close to this one.
Candy Otto Royal.JPG
This is the motor that came with mine.
B-line motor.JPG
Not saying it is original, but defiantly "of the era", and it runs great, so it is staying.
Look forward to watching your clean up Outlaw. Keep us posted. :rocker:

I have this adapter that I think is MT3 outside, I know the inside is MT2. If it will work for you, I'll throw it in the box going out on Monday. Its about 5-1/2" long and just over 1" od at the large end.

Your welcome OutLaw. Here is a couple more of the tag showing the various spindle speeds if you can make them out.

Wow, only 257 other machines between yours and mine. Would guess probably same year then. Don't know how to date them, but perhaps someone here will.
Let me know if ya need to see anything else.

Nice find Outlaw.Just a suggestion on the tag use the least aggressive method first. I am redoing my FIL old sharper and someone at some time decided to paint this thing like a wild man and covered every inch even the tags. here is what I did soaked it very hot water and liquid dish soap softened the paint enough that I just used my finger nail to scrape it off.

Bisley,

Definitely going slow on that. I've use Simple Green in a similar fashion to remove rattle can paint and have saved a couple of tags like that. unfortunately this orange paint is beginning to look like a real industrial finish, and is not softening like usual. so I've started roughing it with steel wool to see if that helps the SG get past the outer shell.

I'm wondering if this is a lacquer, or an epoxy paint. It is really shiny, and epoxy's often chalk as they age. :dunno:

Here are a few of mine. These are the ones I use the most. I buy them cheap, fix them up and use them.

Real nooooooob question but how are you guys clamping work to this type of plate?

evyrydu8.jpg

I have been using two steel tube blocks with several clamps to keep the drill from going down into the plate...

Drill press vise, (be sure to use riser blocks so you don't drill into the vise...)

Sacrificial piece of wood, (not good for precision work)

Similar, I made a wood "Fence" for repeat holes and rows of holes. good for wood projects and basic fabrication (welding etc) but again, not good for real precision work.

Thanks, I'm very excited to finally have a nice machine to restore!

Haha, I can definitely see the resemblance! ;)

I think you guys are on to something here. Drill presses might sell like an 80mpg car if they looked like this. I had to take a double take since early AM here to see if real. Very nice CG!!!!!!!

This thread is making me want to re-restore my walker turner DP... I think the first time was a good practice run... Want to do better job on polishing the shaft and I regret not going red with it to match the garage theme... Got a few weeks off work so why not?
Picked it up like this:

Finished it like this:

I'm pretty sure that was a prior model to the 100, definitely larger than an 80 and the 150's came after the 100.

Man, I can't place that one at all. from early 60's to early 70's at least they only really offered one DP style at a time, unlike earlier where you could get DP's at almost any price point. 46-66 was dominated by the King Seeleys, earlier was Atlas (that one is NOT earlier) After about 66 the syle changed dramatically, but a couple of features carried over from the king Seeley's so likely a major KS face lift... That's an orphan...

I suspect that is about lat to early 70's, but there is zero catalog support for it.

In any case, they are dreaming to think it's worth $225 in "unknown condition"

Whoops! Found it! I was wrong it IS 40's Good guess 9Four! in the 1943 catalog as a bench model, but the war years were often hit or miss due to materials rationing, and a longer post is an easy thing to get...

Edit: Catalog pic, and it's a 13" so not a big one... It does have 4 ball bearings, and the tilting table and I
I'd guess an Early KS... (hard to tell without a mod #)

That link claims 103 prefix, so yes an early King Seeley.

I still don't think it's worth it though...

Oh me either. I've been looking for a press for years now and haven't been able to pull the trigger on anything. Those craftsmans have points for style but I'm not sure they were the best presses. I think I'll keep my eye out for an earlier craftsman or walker turner. Theres a sweet walker turner on ebay right now but it is pickup only in Ohio.

Great!! I just called the guy to see if there was a date on the motor plate but he could not find one, glad you dated it!

We need that Craftsman DP thread now that you have identified most models from the 40's to recent! :willy_nil

Hey All! I'm new here and must say, I like what I see. Amazing how many of us are into these incredible old machines, my wife thinks I'm crazy LOL. I have a great 1940's Delta 11" tabletop drill press, model 10-050. It came from my grandfather years ago and is in absolutely gorgeous condition. I have one problem, I need to replace the top Bronze bushing. It has the following dimensions ID-15/16", OD 1 1/16" and is 2" long. In searching the web, all I can find for powdered bronze bushings in that size are only 1 1/4" long at maximum. Does anyone know of a source for these bushings? I am dying to find a replacement for it, the rest of the machine is in near perfect condition, paint and everything. I will post some pics when I get an opportunity. Thanks for your help.
