Nimrod,
I hope you don't mind that I have your shop pictures as wallpaper. I've been trying to figure out what to do with the useless pavilion I built for my sis in law's wedding five years ago and you have just inspired me.

Thanks so much for the inspiration,
Chip.

I thought I'd throw up a couple pictures of my new work bench and little mill. My neighbor offered up the mill which had been collecting dust in his shed for a long time (he got it as payment for some plumbing he did), and the benchtop is a piece of bowling alley lane his family had used as a butcher block for many years, but recently sat in his shed until termites got to it. I made the bench yesterday and we moved the mill over this afternoon. I've got to make some shelves for the tooling now.

And a neat old guage I picked up at the flea market last week.

I have some bowling ally, but it sure is full of nails!! How did you cut it without hitting all of them?? (kinda hard on a blade)

When I cut mine, I just used a demo blade in the circular saw - it is designed for chewing nails although I have to admit that doing a couple cuts on the bowling alley pretty much did it in.

I love your Garage/Shop!
Using Recycled lumber and windows is Fantastic!
I try to use everything I get my hands on, but you really did a great job.

My old house had a 8 foot section of Bowling lane as a workbench top...Heavy as hell.
But, Man can you beat the **** out of it. I could have gotten as much as I wanted at the time.
And the Bar from that Bowling alley was also being removed, so I grabbed the corner section...5 feet in and 10 feet down.
It was a great Bar set-up in my Basement
Still wish I would have brought the work bench though.

Great work...real inspiration...Thanks for sharing!

Just wondering if anyone comented on the fire hazard of an ALL wood shop- even the oil-soaked floor!!

But I'm not "chicken little" ..... I'm (quite) sure it'll never burn down!!

Do you have any problems jacking up the car on the wooden floor. ie floorboards bowing, spongy floor etc. Do you put something like some plywood under the jack to help disperse the weight? Is the floor over a cement slab or are there joists under there?

I showed my wife these pictures and she read alot of the comments.

First thing she says is "of course all the guys like it, its all wood in there"

They do say that men are attracted to wood floors, wood trimwork, builtins, etc.....

I guess shes on o something.

This garage is wicked!!!!

Man, I wish you could see a shop that's probably close to you. I used to live on Skyline in the Santa Cruz mountains. I met an old guy who had milled up all of his wood, and made a big shop like yours. He had an even older car he was working on. It was kind of a two story place, with huge rough beams. It ends up he built part of it on the neighbor's property, but it didn't seem to matter. It was like history in that place. He got the jobs done.

If I didn't know better I'd say that's a knucklehead on your bench. And a very satified CAT!

:) I'm about to build a super fancy modern shop. But I miss those mountains. There's a lot of older places there. Right on.

This garage has atmosphere. Wood floor, Harley's, clean, everything in its place. Looks like a great place to hang out. I love Old School.

Nimrods shop is what first drew me to the Garage Journal, I was just googling around and found some pictures of it and thought what a massively cool garage.

I understand this is an old thread and I'm new here, but I just have to say; THIS IS THE DOWNRIGHT NICEST SHOP I HAVE EVER SEEN. So simple and rustic.

It really is awesome in a way nothing else I've seen comes close to.

It's quite unfortunate that Nimrod didn't stay active here to keep us in the loop on the shop and what happens inside it.

Bumping this WONDERFUL old thread up just so the newbies who might never find it get a look.

I never tire of exploring all the details in the photos.

Nimrod, we wish you'd come home!

Old thread that needs to be bumped to the top. Everyone needs to read this again or for the first time. Where are you Nimrod?
