Quincy compressor quit

Does this look right to you?

It is this compressor, bought about 9 months ago.

It has always been very noisy. It also takes a minute to start...kind of lugs along then goes. Well, today it made some noise and quit. The thermal overload didn't seem to be tripped (the button on the motor anyway). I let it cool down about an hour and it tried to start but wouldn't. I had only been using it a few minutes today and it's 60° out.

I'll find my paperwork and call Quincy since it's only 9 months old but wanted opinions. I did the break in procedure when I got it (ran it continuously for a few days with no pressure) and re-torqued the heads (didn't need it). I also changed the oil and filter then with Quincy's kit.

Slow to start could mean it's starved for voltage. Are you sure you have a good circuit?

I can check it tomorrow but it was good when we installed it.

The other thing to check is the unloader valve. It farts off pressure from the pump so the next startup cycle isn't fighting against back pressure.

It might be time to remove the belt and see if the motor runs and then turn over the pump by hand and see how it feels.

I would not pull the head or do much else since it's under warranty. Don't give them an excuse to deny the claim.

Dang! That's the same compressor as mine. Two years and going now, with none of the issues you are experiencing. Mine had a head gasket and crank seal oil leak in the beginning and Quincy came out to my house and replaced with a complete new pump. Has been working flawlessly during 100 degree summer temps ever since. Quincy's warranty service was top notch. They'll take care of you.

Due to increased work and travel I have not had a chance to look into this yet. I am going to check the voltage and tighten the belt. The oil and filter were recently changed. I drained the tank, turned the pump pulley by hand and then started the compressor. It works fine until it builds pressure. I did this a few times. Most times the pump will start dragging and the belt will slip right before it would normally cycle off. I just shut it off and left it.

I will get back to it soon and post an update here.

Definitely looks like some sort of defect with the casting on the cylinder head.

I think Quincy uses aluminum heads and reed valves on that model, not very good for durability, or longevity in my opinion.

Should all be covered under warrantee though.

I believe that's just the powder coat lifting from the heat on a poorly prepped area of the head. My Quincy's powder coat isn't doing that on the head, but is lifting a bit on the front crank cover when it gets hot, then flattens back down after it cools down.

I have this compressor behind my shop under a lean-to. The paint is peeling and flaking off everywhere...very poorly quality.

Due to the weather my work trip this week was cancelled. Unfortunately I had already flown to Chicago before getting word. Anyway, when I returned home, I tightened the belt. It was very loose. The compressor ran fine up to the cutoff. I haven't had a chance to actually use the compressor all week. The belt is worn but I'm hoping that is all it was.

I should get a tech out here to check it out before the warranty expires.

I suggest if you use this machine then turn off after 30 minutes.Machine noise it be coil problem and try to change or replace the valves.

Anyway, when I returned home, I tightened the belt. It was very loose. The compressor ran fine up to the cutoff.

A loose belt won't keep the motor from starting.

It might keep the pump from turning at full speed but the motor will run.
