Around here LP went up $1 per gallon overnight! I hope this isn't our tax dollars at work?!

Propane is $5 a gallon here...last time I filled up it was $1.49. I ran out this week (has been colder than I anticipated) and I said screw it...don't need heat in the shop that bad! I'll wait for the price to go down.

For what it's worth, when I called the Propane company to ask about pricing, you could tell they weren't happy about the cost right now. Refused to sell more than $500 worth because of the price...telling everyone to wait for it to go down to fill up.

Same thing here in Wisconsin and the UP. Price jumped, apparently there is a shortage right now, and the propane companies aren't filling the tanks so that there is enough propane for everyone to get some.

Supply and demand, there's plenty of people needing it right now. I know a few weeks ago, my HHO supplier was wondering if they were going to get some as the bulk drivers left for greener pastures leaving the depot without delivery guys.

LP, sounds like there is a nationwide shortage starting to happen.

I saw on the news yesterday that natural gas just went up too, due to high demand. I'm ready for some milder weather.

Yep. Now the fires start. Between using the fireplace they haven't touched in 10 years for some heat, and the incorrect placement of portable space heaters, it's going to be a sad time reading the paper and watching the news.

I am not tied to any supplier, so I called around for best price, and told them it would take at least 400 gal. 3 of the dozen companies quoted 365.9 if over 400 gal, and pay driver cash or check. Everyone else was 3699 - 375.9. I dealt with same company who I bought from before, and it tool 404+ gallons; and the bank account is $1476 lighter.

They brought me 150 gal of propane today. The driver told me be glad that I locked the price in at 1.43 a gal because if I had not it would be 5.20 a gal. Thank god we locked the price in.

I have a small 26,000 btu LP wall heater that I run in my shop... The last time I paid for propane was the 1st of the month for $2.35 a gallon. I called about 6 places and it was from $2.35 to $4.08 then. I don't even want to call around and see now.

In my house I run off road diesel from the gas station down the road(cheaper by around 60 cents a gallon from the delivery services). It has been $3.40 a gallon since Thanksgiving. My setup burns 7 gallons a day... $24 a day to heat my house when it drops below 32 degrees & I can't run my heat pump. I have electric heat strips but it can't handle these 10-15 degree nights we have been having for a week straight now.

so that is why my old propane supplier won't come out to get their tank and pay me for the few hundred gallons of fuel in it... Probably will be spring before they come remove it at these prices

Set the heat in the house down to 50 or 60 and use an electric radiant heater to warm the rooms your in. Buy an electric mattress cover too...

I ran short last week, and put 300 gallons in at $3.60 per gallon. Don't know what the propane is running, since I haven't filled that since the fall. I was told that the shortage is because of the high demand, and that there are not enough trucks and drivers to haul product to the Midwest. Propane comes in on the East Coast from Ireland, and is trucked to the distribution points, unlike natural gas, which is delivered by pipeline. If this country were to ever get serious about our energy usage, the prices would go down, and employment would go up. I learned over 50 years ago that the economy is directly related to energy costs, and when we have inexpensive energy, the economy goes up. When energy cost go up, the economy goes down. With the government shutting down the coal burning electrical generation plants, the cost of energy is going to continue to skyrocket. The sad part is that the EPA will not allow high sulfur coal to be burned in the US, however, we do export this high sulfur coal to other countries that burn it, which makes no sense to me. If high sulfur coal is bad for the atmosphere, then it shouldn't be exported. If it is going to be used, then it should be used here first!

Let's remain calm here, the price rise doesn't have anything to do with black helicopters or government conspiracies. It's simple free-market supply and demand.

In the late summer and fall, a portion of the refining production is refocused from highway and agricultural fuel products to heating fuel products. Production targets are set to levels that will meet predicted consumer demand, support profitable sales, and not leave a lot of unsold fuel in the spring. So far this year, it's been wicked cold in most of the mid-west and east so heating product consumption has been very high .... probably way above that predicted. End result .... heating fuel inventory is falling fast and prices are rising accordingly.

Free market supply and demand. It's one of the things that makes this country great. Turn the thermostat down and put on an extra sweatshirt.

I am so glad I got rid of my fuel oil furnace a few years ago and switched to an electric furnace. Every fall now, the electric companies fight over me to get me to be their customer with their discounts. I have gotten through the past two winters (4 months- Nov. thru Feb.) for under $600.00. Plus, no more dirty fuel oil fumes. I have a neighbor who just spent over $700.00 in December for fuel oil with two months left to go in the winter. :scared: Anymore, electric is the way to go in the winter. ;)

6 years ago I put in an outside wood stove because heating oil had gone up to 3.50 a gallon. We usually used about 5-700 gallons a year depending on the temp. I live on a farm and the wood only costs me the labor to cut it and supplies for the chain saw, i already owned the saws and trucks. I also use it to heat my hot water which saves me 50.00 a month from Oct to April when I use the stove. The stove cost 5k and pay back was about 2 yrs when the winter of 2009-2010 is figuered in, we would have used 1000 Gal easy that year. I have hot air heat so all the duct work was there. The house stays as warm as I want it. The only repair so far was for a new circulator pump which cost 60.00. I have about a 2 year supply of wood in the wood sheds and being retired I cut wood whenever the weather is nice, just to keep ahead. If you have wood available you might consider the outside stoves. Prior to the outside stove I had a wood stove that I heated the house with. The house is a bit bigger than 2500 sq ft, and one room would be hot and at the other end of the house cold. Plus I had the dirt , smell and danger of a flue fire, of which I had a few in the 35 yrs I used the stove, now everything is outside. One of the best investments I ever made.

This has me concerned, my entire house runs off propane (stove, water heater, heat). I just bought 100 gallons two weeks ago at $2.73/gallon, hope it lasts me until prices come back down!

From what I have read there is no actual shortage, just shortage of drivers to deliver it. Also said that the big train derailment up in Canada put new restrictions on trains carrying explosive stuff so they can't deliver it as fast.

Around here they have a limit of how much you can get, think it's 150 gallons. Also they are not taking ANY new customers. So if you're not locked in you aren't getting ANY propane. People are taking smaller tanks to the fill up places to at least get some.

Was reading yesterday WI declared a state of emergency over this. Allowing truck drivers to drive longer hours and some other stuff to hopefully get this supply up.

Feel sorry for those that use propane and can't get any.

I bought a 1000 gal. LP tank this summer for this very reason. Filled it up at the time for $1.45/gal.

It would have been less had I got around to it earlier, but by the time I had my ducks in a row, it had gone up from $1.29 to $1.45. Still, that tank will get me through a whole winter with room to spare.

As it is now, I'm still on the last fill from the previous winter on my leased 500 gal. tank. Down just below 20% left in that one, so I've used just over 300 gallons so far this winter. Once that's gone, I'll switch to the new tank, which has 700 gals in it (it was all the truck had in it when I filled it).

Propane In Southern WI is now approaching 4.20 gal in some some areas.
Totally out of line. The was an article in the local paper quoting the prices at the Superior wholesale terminal.

It was going up .30 -.40 -.50 cents per DAY lat week.

I use propane to heat my 40x60 shed. Think I am going to plumb natural gas from the house this spring...

Glad my new house has natural gas. My old house had HHO for heat and hot water and propane for cooking and the drier. We would go through 275 gallons in 2 months $500 per month easy. Now in a bigger house with a fireplace and everything it's about $70 per month

With great personal restraint, I'll avoid making any stereotypical-type comments about la-la land Californians being totally out-of-touch with the rest of the world ......:)

"HHO" is "home heating oil". It's basically a grade of diesel fuel with red dye added. Since it is for home or business heating only there are no highway taxes paid on the fuel so the red dye is added to prevent it from being used in cars or highway trucks.

Most municipal and suburban areas have enough population density to support nat. gas distribution systems, but once you leave these areas (and ya don't have to be "in the sticks"!!!! :shocking:) nat. gas systems are not economical. Thus, homes and businesses use alternate heating fuel sources such as HHO or propane. Each house has either fuel oil storage tanks (typically between 200 to 500 gal.) or LP tanks of large size (no, your 40 lb. grill bottle won't work!!) and the tanks, of course, have to be filled periodically by fuel delivery trucks.

Heat pumps are used in areas where the winter temperatures aren't too severe, but the heat pumps begin to poo out at temps below 40F or so. Thus, even houses in northern climes with heat pumps have to use HHO, LP or resistant electric heat to supplement the heat pump.

I don't know what heating oil is around here, but our propane was $1.99 two weeks ago. I have been hearing on the news that there is a shortage on Propane. I haven't heard from anyone yet what natural gas is, although when one starts raising prices, they all seem to raise their prices.

And I really feel bad for you guys paying $5+ per gallon. That's definitely got to hurt the checking account a lot.

 its ok, you can make all the cali jokes you want :D (i am front oregon and just live here now) but even in oregon never seen anything like that. I know a little about red dye diesel as we also have that for "farm equipment use only" and like yours its taxed less than normal diesel.

it does seem (for me) to be crazy that you still heat with this method. seems very "old school" way of doing it.

could you use that same "oil" to run a diesel generator? just wondering

I was actually thinking of converting my old house's burner from heating oil (diesel) to vegetable oil or bio-diesel ( I had some good restaurant and deli contacts). It just wasn't worth the work to me to do it
