What level of discounting are we talking here. I've seen stores close (not Sears) and discount 15%, big deal. Or I've seen them discount small amounts then once all the good stuff is cleaned out start with progressively lower percentages.
Man I'd love to go on a Sears shopping spree at their Outlet prices.

Sears is going to be dead in just a few years. Sears Canada just announced this wednesday that they are cutting 1600 jobs in the country. The catalog service is going to be in the Philipines and Bulgaria with IBM.

Interesting. Sears was the only store standing on the 88 acre site. Wow!

Sears will hold a liquidation sale at its store on Brightseat Road in Landover beginning Friday Jan. 10 and close the store for good in mid-March, a company spokesman said.

The store operated for more than a decade in a sea of empty parking lots after Landover Mall closed in 2002 and was demolished a few years later.

At the time of the mall’s closure, Sears officials said they would stick it out in Landover, even with nothing surrounding it on 88 acres.

Sad to see this happening.

I used to be a regular shopper at their stores in Canada.

Move to San Antonio and was really disappointed when
I visited the Sears here... not the same vibrant and busy
Sears I had experienced in Canada.

that is how a few sears over here were.

first was at southroads mall in bellevue, ne. once southroads closed, sears stayed behind and it stayed alive there on a dead strip mall area after the actual mall closed, for about 8 years maybe.

and there are 2 more sears left (actual store, not the hometown type). another is attached to a deceased mall that has lost all of its real stores about 12 years ago, and now its only got one section of the mall open with some hodge podge of mom and pop type stores trying to make use of the space. but sears is still attached to the mall and trying to hang on, the only reason they are alive is because they are dead center of a metropolitan area.

it's only a matter of time before its gone, that store is pretty much dead all day long except on holidays and black friday, the last remaining sears store with decent people walkign through all the time is attached to yet another mall, that is still active and thriving. but its just a matter of time like all the others.

Landover store and the mall have been "closed" for decades...the only thing keeping it going was the auto "service" dept.

No surprise on this location.

Forget tool deals, ask about deals on the store's infrastructure/fixtures - display cases, cabinets, tables, some stores will even sell you light fixtures. I forget the name of it now, but the last big bookstore chain went out 2-3 years ago those stores had a helluva lot of really nice heavy-duty furniture and cabinets that were perfect for shop use. I had no room but went to look and was really sad when I saw the prices, I almost bought a bunch of items anyway!

I am surprised that they help out as long as they did. I lived pretty close to that mall when it first opened and it was the premier place to shop in the area. It went downhill and after a while I would not even consider leaving my car in the parking lot :( The rest of the mall has been vacant for years and it amazes me that Sears hung on as long as they did. I cant imagine what their theft losses were :(

I too lived not far away, and even when it opened - it was suggested to do your shopping during daylight and for women to walk in pairs, at least. Within a year, rapes were occurring weekly, brandishing of guns over close in parking spaces and cars, emblems and wheels being stolen while you shopped....they even stole the "hemi-cuda" emblems off my shaker hood in 1973.

Portend of the future for that area and others similar. Sad, as it was millions of dollars to build for Lerner's

......

Similar story up here near Pontiac, MI. An entire mall has closed down (think the common mall by you that has JC Penny, Macy's, etc.) and while the big abondoned structure is still there, there is a lonely little Sears attached at one end still open. Have no idea how in that area, and the inside looks like it won't be open much longer if you go in. Got a battery for the truck there a few weeks ago so I know it's still going, but I'll have my eye on it closing for some deals.

Sears is closed, they just don't know it.

That's about right. Have any of you blundered into a K Mart store lately???? That's their other half and you have to wonder, "What in Hell Were They Thinking". It's like walking into a :sad:Woolworth store.

I went by there today. Tools are 20% off, tool storage is 25% off, most of the store is 10-30% off. I saw some items like luggage at 50% off already.

The store and the tool department still seem to be pretty well stocked.

also closed the local store here in Columbia and a couple more in Nashville.
Now for me it's a 100 mile round trip to buy/exchange a tool and most likely have to wait a few weeks or more to get replacement in the mail.. Off to SK Handtools I go for new tools!!

Man, sad to see all of the Sears bashing going on here. Let's take a break from the cork sniffing and remember where a good deal of handymen got their tools from.

Yep, Craftsman tools help to rebuild a good deal of the USA.

All of you who are cheering their closing should be ashamed of yourself.

Sears should be ashamed of themselves, you can't blame us for pointing out the obvious. They used to be the BEST company now they are a shadow of their former self selling Chinese tools under the "Craftsman" name. Tool quality has plummeted. Have you had to return a broken tool lately? Last time I did it was a busted ratchet. They pulled out a box of rebuilt ratchets and said "pick one". None were the same model I had. They might have had new ratchet heads installed but the bodies were all beat to hell. I would love to see the Sears name and especially Craftsman regain the high standing that they once had but it seems that they would rather concentrate on selling trending clothes to 14 year olds.

While I agree that watching a retail icon's slow death is sad and a heckuva lot of good people will be negatively affected by it's eventual demise, at the end of the day, Sears did this to Sears.

Based upon an appliance purchase experience we had last year, I have absolutely no pity for them. The store personnel / management could not of been more indifferent when it came to customer service, and I use to work retail.

When they closed the one near me, the discount was not worth it. Cheaper to buy stuff at an OPEN store. Once they announced closure it was 10% off the first few weeks, 15% off and then 20% off.. No coupons or discounts accepted, no warranty service. Worked out to be cheaper to buy the stuff from Sears.com when on sale with coupons and discounts.

IMHO the only reason to visit is to snag the display fixtures...lots of nice stuff, in my case all the nice stuff was gone right away.

After seeing the quality of the last few Craftsman tool kits, and tool items I have purchased YOU should be shamed for supporting them. Chinese ****....

I love brand new sockets with NO labeling on them.

Sears has been dumping gasoline on themselves for the last few years. Diminished tool quality, hassle when to need to replace a tool for whatever reason, it was only time. I'm not even going to get in to their other departments like electronics and such. Finally, the match has been lit.

Plain and simply, BS. No matter what you think of Sears they employee thousands of employees and pay a bucket load of taxes. They have done what the felt they had to to continue on. Their tools are no worse than what you will find in Lowes or HD. I think those celebrating Sears decline are sick individuals.

First off, I didn't say anything about buying Sear's Chinese tools. I have and will continue to buy their US-made stuff until it is no longer available.

I'm not here to dispute their business practices or management. What I was and am saying is that ANY business as big as Sears closing is shame and nothing to cheer about.

There are a lot of hard working people who work for Sears and have nothing to do with their products or business practices. The Sears Hardware by me is staffed with courteous and helpful employees. They have always done right by me.

It really seems like some folks (on this site and in the public at large) love nothing more than to see others fail and then jump on the finger pointing bandwagon of "I told you so."

If we, as consumers, didn't support companies like WalMart and Harbor Freight, maybe our economy wouldn't be as bad off as it is in now.

We're in trouble and everyone who supports foreign-made goods just because they are cheaper is only compounding the problem.

It is what it is.

Good 'ole Mr. Lampert is managing this liquidation in true investment banker fashion . . . bleed the last profits as long as there is acceptable positive cash flow, spin off/sell off anything that has brand value, liquidate undesirable inventory at the best price possible, then sell the capital assets to the highest bidders. The pieces are worth more than the whole.

He is one of those greedy fellows that could care less about others, that is of course unless you are one of the others that is making him money. He had no love or affinity for Sears, nor their employees, nor their customers. All he saw was a chance to leverage his multi-million dollar investment into billions.

It's easy for us to armchair quarterback and spout our knowledge about how "Sears is doing it wrong." But by Eddie's playbook, everything is going according to plan. Brick and mortar retailing is falling out of favor. Eddie knew that going in. If by some stroke of luck retailing made a comeback, Sears would benefit and he wins. If it doesn't, he bought/merged Sears and K-mart at such an attractive price that he could milk it, liquidate it, and still win. The key was not to over invest in a potential failing venture. From the looks of the stores, and the way that employees have been treated, he definitely has not over-invested.

Our sears in Dubuque, iowa is closing next week. Although I wasn't the biggest craftsman fan it was nice to have here. If I broke a tool mid day the store was half mile away and I could get a decent tool to finish the job.

Wow, look at this picture from the internet.

Sears, it's autocenter, and some parking lot...that's it.
They must see tumbleweeds blow by regularly...

Agreed, look at all the americans losing jobs with sears and kmart closings. With their autocenters, some might be like the rest of us...no need to be like that about it.

Be careful at Sears Landover. Buy one tool and loose a whole box to the thugs breaking into trucks in the parking lot. I used to have a shop a few blocks away. Cops around there don't do jack. Security is a joke. I used to take someone just to guard the truck.

Home Depot near there is bad too. I actually had thugs following my toolbody truck around the parking lot on foot just waiting for me to park and go inside. I called the manager and told him that I'd like to use his store to supply my business but it was impossible due to the thugs in the lot.

He told me that HQ advised them to not get involved outside of the building. Probably a lliability in liberal courts of the area.
