Home Depot - Irwin Spade Bits on clearance

I was in my HD yesterday and saw the yellow tags above them. The extra-long (16" I think) spade bits in sizes from 3/8 to 1" were $2/ea. (normal price was between $8-$12/ea). They also had a 8 or 9 piece set of standard lengths in a plastic case for $9 (3/8 thru 1-1/2")

I have the set in the plastic case. Haven't used them much but they do work well.

Lots of them on the shelf at the HD I was in yesterday, at the prices OP found. Standard length ones were $1 each. No interest in them personally, as the Daredevils are far superior, at least for applications that I use them for, and can be had sometimes for around $1/bit on Amazon.

I bought of few of these clearance bits on Saturday. I think the long bits are a pretty good deal at $2. I couldn't figure out why until I hit a different HD and didn't find the Irwin section....they were all Bosch now!

Now I'm not sure if I should have bought the stubby set for $9. I guess I better check how much the Daredevil equivalent set is. The Irwin set did come with a quick connect extension though. Hmm...

IMO, the standard spade bit has been completely replaced by the Bosch DareDevils and affordable Foresner bits. I haven't used a regular spade bit in at least 10 years and will probably never again.

Aren't Daredevils a spade bit? Spade bits have their place but I prefer Forstner type bits or the Irwin Tri-Flute bits. They don't walk so bad

ETA: I see the Daredevils have a screw tip but are a spade bit. I assume the screw tip keeps them straight while drill
