I need a "low-rider" wagon

I'm adding extra heat with kerosene heaters right now. Life is much less stinky if I light the heater outside, let it come up to temp, bring it in for the day, and then put it back outside to extinguish it. It's only during startup and shutdown that they smell. Right now, I'm just picking them up and carrying them in and out, which is hard on my back and my wife can't do. I'm looking for a wagon with large soft tires that can easily roll over the threshold in the door but still be low enough to the ground that the heaters don't make it tippy.

Anyone know of a commercial product like this or am I going to have to roll my own?

How about something like this:

http://www.harborfreight.com/movers-dolly-93888.html

Modify it to tightly / securely hold heater if necessary.

I've actually bought one of those from HF before. Two problems with it:

1) THEY'RE UTTER ****. I bought it to wheel my small generator around the garage. The casters that came on it wouldn't even roll right. I ended up replacing all 4 casters at a cost significantly higher than what I paid for the dolly to begin with.

2) The casters are way too small to roll over a door threshold without total chaos.

Strange, the mover's dollies get rave reviews from members here. I've had good luck with them myself. But I agree, the hard casters won't really do what you want.

I know a guy who welded up his own frame for his salamander. He had two wheels at one end and legs at the other with a handle that stuck up. It worked great and didn't take up any extra room. I'd really like to do something similar for mine.

Wow, that really just kind of blows my mind. I guess I got the one that shouldn't have passed QC, but it was so bad it's hard to imagine it working well for anyone.

My fallback on this is to try to fabricate something with big casters, but I've got so many other projects going on right now that I'd just rather buy it and be done with it.

I have one of those 2 wheel carts that can become a four wheel dolly depending on where you put the handle. I use it to move boxes and then switch it to be a platform for moving other things. I find it very handy for numerous things. Wheels are about 5-6 inches on one side and smaller on the handle end. But you can pivot it up easily if it gets stuck on something.

Well, I guess that would be a "no thanks". Sounds like you're gonna be building something.

I've had good luck with the HF dollies and own several. That being said, I don't think they are right for this application. Like the OP stated, I don't think they will go over the threashold very well.

Any local indoor fleamarkets in your area ? Maybe a little red wagon might work if the tub is larger enough for the heater to sit in.

I'd use a real 4 wheel dolly or a convertible hand truck. Something useful the rest of the year.

Have you tried the kerosene additives they sell to reduce the smell? I use mine in a single car garage and don't notice a smell at start up or shutdown.

The red Northern wagon with the heater pointing toward the back should do fine, according to my limited experience with it. They are found at various places, made in China, for about $100.

I have seen factory made carts to put the heaters in. You may want to ask at the farm stores or places where they sell the heaters. They even have thermostats that you plug into the power cords to control the heat...Richie

I made mine a permanent generator cart. Was so difficult finding a wheel set for my jenny, and since I wasn't really using it for much of anything, I put it to work permanently.:rocker:
