yes you can
the load rate or spring rate of the casters do not have to be the same.
if you put heavier tools on one side of the box than the other then one side might be slightly lower than the other (with a spring loaded caster). you will be putting the lower rate casters in the middle where you have no casters now. all this will do is reduce some of the load from your exsisting casters, it will cause no harm.

now if you were putting casters in the middle that could only hold 200# I would be concerned because you would likly greatly shorten their life, but the load ratings are close enough to what you have that I do not see how this will hurt you

yeah true... i did talk with my dad as i live with my parents. my dad told me that he have to go to Fort Wayne, Indiana for inspection and meeting.. i will print the post that you gave quote and names and phone.

i am little confused. you talk about if i add the casters on middle that will help or not?

Hey fellas - Again, awesome thread. I LOVE finding out about SO's source and paying resonable prices.

Do you think faultless could retread my casters? I'll have to call them and find out if nobody knows. My casters hold loads fine but the treads are pretty chewed up from running over rough shop floors and hardware it seems. (Box is used...) This wear has caused the casters not to lock well or roll smooth.

what I am saying in short is that I would not worry about a small difference is the rating of the casters.
the difference between adding a 1500# rated caster and a 1200# caster should ne be worried about as they are added casters.
if you tried to add caster to the middle and the added casters were only rated at something like 200# then you could see a shortened life on those casters (and only those)

First, thanks for this thread. I have been wanting to find some good casters, for a possible toolbox/workbench that I would like to build (everythings on hold, due to relative in the hospital).

Second, Deaf, since you said you live with your PARENTS (plural), can't you have your mom call from home? (keep your dad working and get her help?)

my mom dont want do what i want to... even my mom dont know what i am talk about tool or parts on vehicles.... so i just let mom do her way. my dad are interest and helping me a lot as if i need find where the tool at or where buy, my dad can find... my dad was plan to be automotive mechanic but his high school friend got car accident(that why my dad dont like wrenching to make money) and got in coma for like 15 years. doctor said that guy cant stay live if pull the plug on vent and food supply machines.. But my dad dont make regret about it because made good choice and make a good living to have good job and stay at home as own office to work on all reports instead go to big office in indianapolis city...

UPDATE: my dad did called and talked to "tom" on phone. that Tom was surprised that my dad "knew" that their company made casters for snap on and else business. also he wonder where my dad get "vance" from... i told my dad that i did talk about it on this forum and Vance help me a lot!! thank you again!!

my dad did ordered it today and should get it soon like later this week or next week...

my snap on guy gave me price quote as 234 dollars each caster. so merkva_4 did found the company who made the casters for Snap on toolboxes as Faultless casters. he did called and got price quote as 65 dollars a caster (same one).. so i did ordered two casters which it is 65 dollars each plus shipping as 20 dollars from that company. it is little less than 150 dollars. that is much better than snap on sell as 234 dollars each which total for two casters are 468 dollars plus taxes...

well my snap on guy are on vacation for two weeks... i am plan to put my new casters in and let see what my snap on guy will see... my snap on guy are very good to me and when he found out the price for caster, he was look like WHAT!! so he did called snap on company to see why it is so high price... he said sorry, it is 234 dollars caster. i told him no thanks but buy more tools that i use a lot...

Andy, when you get them, just put a piece of wood 2x6 on the floor jack and lift one end of the box up. You'll have to go a little bit higher to have room for mounting the middle set on, but it won't be too scary. :beer:

yeah thanks!!! i will pull heaviest tools out so i dont make any problem on it to jack on box.

Thats great Merk found you those for such a great and better price; Why should any caster cost more then $100 apiece? If the OEM can make money @ $65 apiece it makes you wonder how much Snap-On pays for them; I wonder if the spec is specific to Snap-On's load requirements for that specific box? Regardless, I cannot see how a slightly lower spec would make a major difference! You should take off one of your old ones when you have it jacked up and examine it close to see any visual differences (some pics would be cool, too!); I have a feeling there won't be any! Yoo-hoo! Research and finding the OEM pays off once again! You saved a ton of dough! :)

Are these faultless casters? I assume they are 8"...

I wouldn't mind putting these same 8" casters on my SO box. They really set off the box, IMO:

snap on's markup is in accordance with the handeling and warehousing.

snap on's warehouse is very expensive (what does snap on have that is not)

keeping them in the warehouse is very expensive which makes the casters very expensive which makes them a slow seller.

if they are a slow seller then they will sit in the warehouse longer which makes them more expensive because of the time they spent in the warehouse

the must handle them alot because they rack up quite a handeling charge.

so I would expect that you are getting something that has been sitting around and been handeled alot

For $234.00 each, Snap-on must be storing them on velvet pillows in a carefully maintained climate controlled penthouse suite in Manhattan. :D

Retread - no. You may be able to buy replacement wheels for the casters.

I wonder if this is right. I'm not saying it isn't, but I just wonder if it really justifies the huge markup or if there are other, more obvious reasons for the markup here?

I wonder if it violates SO's francishee contract to order direct from SO's supplier's instead of through SO itself? It's got to, right? Can an SO truck carry other things besides SO or SO authorized gear if the driver/indepedent franchisee is operating under license from SO?

Another thought: since their boxes full retail are so expensive; is it really surprising that their replacement parts are high as well?

i cannot speak for SO but when i was a matco dealer (before franchise) the requirement was you had to maintain a 6 week rolling purchase average at 60% of the national average or you could be terminated. they used that clause to get rid of those dealers who purchased (too much) outside. i'm not sure what had changed since they wen't to franchised dealers, maybe dave can fill us in.
