I've only posted a few times on here but check on a very regular basis (just not much to add at the moment). So, hi. :hellobye:

I am working on gathering some material for my first bench in my garage and picked up some free cabinets tonight from a buddy who wasn't using them. I plan to hang them over the bench but they are a wood color right now, I'm wanting to paint them black or grey (not sure which yet).

Any tips I should know about doing that? I'm not sure what they are made of exactly but they are sturdy kitchen cabinets.

I appreciate everyone on here and all of the tips/help they give on a daily basis!

Coming from the kitchen you may want to clean them with TSP (tri-sodium-phosphate) first to get all the grease off before painting.

I just spray bombed mine. I spayed primer first then black paint. I let it cure for a week or two, and it looks great. It doesn't come off easily either.

I would first paint with an oil based primer. That should make sure the top coat hardens. Sometimes, when applying a top coat directly on an unknown cabinet finish, the top coat reacts with the old finish and just won't cure. It's not worth the risk, so primer first.

This^, but I'd first do what two other posters mentioned: clean with TSP and then scuff with 120 or 150 grit sandpaper. Tack off the sanding dust and prime. Then a finish coat.

Don't use spray paint. That's my tip.:D

Since they're probably already finished you can't stain them which is ideal with wood so you can see the grain under the color. Since you said paint...you can just paint it. I'd just use a paint+primer in one paint (or whatever I have sitting around in the garage).

Mistint man...mistint. You won't find black ever but you can get gray...it won't be that awful a gray.:bounce: Garage stuff I wouldn't even bother removing the hardware (except the front handles), just tape it up and paint it.
