That is a sweet looking vise. Nowhere near me though so that is at least one admirer out of the running.

I am curious though. Some posts have actual images, others seem to have thumbnails. What is the advantage of just posting thumbnails instead of the actual picture in posts like these?

Either way, it seems vastly superior to the posts in which somebody asks a question like, "What year did they ad the swivel locks to this vise?" and posts a link to an ebay listing or craigslist ad which end up getting eventually deleted, leaving the original post mostly meaningless.

With the thumbnail you can click on it for the large pic without it taking up a lot of screen space if you don't click on it.

What I find really annoying is when people use the quote function and have the same huge pictures show up in post after post within the same thread. (You can delete the pics within the "Quote" box before posting a reply).

I saw the same thing. damn those old guys that thought that was like an anvil back there. RR track or a good chunk of steel must have been harder to find than a big old vise.

thanks for sharing because it is a sweet looking vise if you don't inspect for damage too closely.

In 1973 I wanted to buy a bench vise, and looked in the want-ads of the local newspaper. An elderly man called and told me he had one but said his vise was probably too big for what I wanted. Thinking to myself “they don’t come too big for me”, I went to see it. I couldn’t believe how big this bad boy was (Prentiss bulldog 56. He said for $15 I could take it away. It is well over 100 lbs. I use that old boy daily in my blacksmith business.
I would love to know its history. I’m only borrowing it. It will be around long after I’m gone (I’m 82).
