Thought about buying a Streamlight Stinger LED HL today off the SO truck today..I've been pricing them on the internet web sites and EBay,,, most around $140-$160.....his price was $219 plus tax... ouch!!.. Decided not to buy it as I can't justify paying that much more.

I bought a Stinger off my Snap On guy a few years ago. Light, with two batteries and a charger was about $150 plus tax. He even warrantied the first two chargers that quit working.

Maybe this will make more sense....I figured SO would get a break on their cost( and maybe they do)from Streamlight since they buy bunches...so they can sell more competitively......you know...the more you buy, the cheaper it is ...

In the uk we don't have the option to pay for something over 6-8 weeks from eBay. They don't bring the stuff right to my work and warranty it without the need to post it back to the manufacturer either.

I get what your saying.

I dont see that happening though. The franchisee gets the deals but he usually has high overhead. So unless a product sits too long, most likely wont see a "deal".IMO

Im reluctant to ask a price on some items.

Yep. He has to put gas in the truck, buy food, pay bills, bring the product to you, finances it, will warranty it easily, etc..

Let's also not forget that the $160 does NOT include shipping which could be twenty bucks. Now we're at $180 for the light via the net with a PIA warranty policy. Offer the driver $200 and you might have a deal, in which you're now helping the local economy; and if something happens to the light you have local help......

Just like most things trucks sell. You are paying a premium, so they can do "free" warranties. But the cost is still in your favor, on the first issue normaly.

Snap On doesn't buy Streamlight products by the truck load and ship them to their route drivers. Snap On route drivers are a franchise just like every McDonald's. McDonald's doesn't buy concentrated Coke by the truck load and ship it to the franchises for the pop machines, the franchise owner sets up a account with the local Coke distributor. The Snap On driver has a business in his name and contacts Streamlight under his business name to set up a account and order lights at wholesale to resell on the Snap On truck.

I lost the last Streamlight I bought off the Snap On truck a week after buying it. 200 dollars and all I had was one battery and a charger. I found the same model on Ebay and it came with one battery and no charger for 80 dollars so it kinda worked out I guess.

I Believe in supporting the tool truck guy, for hard line stuff, but when it comes to other stuff that you can get cheaper somewhere else, go for it. Ken.

Prices aren't important when you use the truck. I say "add it to my account" and never see the price. I have the same flashlight but have no idea how much I paid. In the end I probably used it in thousand dollar purchase-order jobs. Spend $200 one month so I can bill out $10000.

My thoughts exactly....I buy the normal SO tools as most .....but when I can save $80 or so on a non SO item...and use that toward a SO tool truck purchase like a ratchet or screwdriver...the truck driver and I both win.

You think you are shocked when stepping on a snap on truck, honey child I am shocked when paying for movie tickets...:scared:

I quit going to the movies when people refused to not use their cell phones...and texting....and we have all heard what can happen.......but I agree,,the "going to the movie " costs are way up there.

What did the Snap-on package include? Pricing varies widely depending on what is in the box, i.e. a/c and d/c chargers, piggy-backs, extra battery etc. All that said, I'm sure you can find whatever package you want cheaper online, you just won't have the ability to warranty it with your driver if there's ever and issue.

Amen. Paid $22 for me and the Ol' Lady to watch a regular movie with no snacks or drinks and had to watch a Pepsi commercial while drinking a Coke I snuck in. :headscrat

The movie worked in my favor though. The Ol' Lady agreed we need a bigger TV. :D

Why does Streamlight have a "PIA" warranty policy? I have a TON of Streamlights and only had a minor issue with one which was handled promptly and at no cost by Streamlight customer service.

There are many internet and other local stores that carry Streamlight at a lower cost and will provide top-notch after sale support. Many law enforcement equipment suppliers (in most every major city) sell Streamlight and many are authorized repair stations.

My personal experience on SO trucks is that if it's not on sale, used, or says Snap On, you're paying too much. All of the little bits around the edges are usually outsourced and available cheaper elsewhere. I am happy to support my Snappy guy, and continue to pay him good money for my hard line tools, but I also like to save any money I can while I'm at it.

You're paying for ease of service. The warranty, no shipping, no taking time out of your day to drive to a store and buy one, etc... That being said, I don't own a Stinger and never plan on buying one as my Fenix is a better light.

I have a Streamlight Stinger LED (75732). Bought it on toolweb for like $100 cheaper than the Snap-on, Mac, or Matco trucks. Some things just aren't worth paying a ridiculous mark up just so some guy can pay his HOA fees to a neighborhood you would never be allowed past the gate into.

If you buy something on e-bay or the net and have issues, many companies will make you mail the item back to them. then you must box it, drive to a shipper and wait for it to return. Add up your time and gas and you might have lost your savings (this holds true for many internet purchases, not just flashlights). Even having to drive it to an "authorized" repair center, still means your time and gas; whereas when a truck comes to your shop, it doesn't cost you any gas or your free time.

Why all the but hurt about the warranty??
You really think a $140 flashlight isn't going to last? For the price difference just buy two online and self warranty it for the extra week you'd have to wait sending it back to the manufacturer.'

And as a bonus you won't have to wait for the truck to come by -- just pick up the spare and go. That has got to be worth $40 right?

And the resale value of two is always better than one...

Don't see any reason to buy from the Snap on guy.

Flashlights in shops get broken eventually, its a simple fact.

I agree with that -- I realized, while cleaning up and reorganizing tools, that I must have 8 flashlights floating around and every one of them is a "good" light, not cheapo junk -- most of them don't work any more and buried themselves among the other tools. They get beat pretty hard in a shop environment.

Because of this, I have been trying for the optimum level of inexpensive yet durable. I found an Ultrafire 502B with charger and spare battery for about 20 bucks. When it gets destroyed, I will not have lost much, and by they way it has worked so far, I'll bet it gets me just as much use around the shop as all the tool truck expensive lights....not to mention it's brighter than any of the others I have....plus the strobe light function is fun for temporarily blinding people who annoy me:bounce:

On the issue of SO's price for a non-SO item: I think they have gotten worse over the years as the franchises have been under more strict control of SO corporate. The corporate douchebags only want to concentrate on selling SO branded stuff AND the franchisee can get his **** handed to him if Corp catches him buying "unauthorized" AWD (non-SO tools) stuff to re-sell at better prices than what they didctate.....They have no idea they are killing themselves....
