Anyone have details on the proper way to extend 2x4 studs to 2x6 in the corners?

Pics would be helpful. Considering just saying f-it and staying with 2x4 walls as it will add a lot more work to finishing out my garage.

Lay a 2x4 in the corner going one way, and go the other way with a 2x2 on top of it.

Draw a picture from the top, and you will see it. I assume you are furring out with 2x2s.

2x4 walls are fine however, and you can get more insulation value with higher rated fiberglass or blown in foam. Why do you want 2x6 walls ?

Just to get it straight, you are at bare stud 2x4 walls now, and you want to make them 2x6 walls, correct? are you doing this so you can put drywall, or whatever over it?

Take your back wall for instance, and you build out your studs all the way across. Now, on your side wall, add a 2x6 stud in that buts up to the back wall stud. You may have to put a solid 2x4 stud in first on the side wall, to build the space out past your 2x2 extension on the back wall. Then by adding the 2x6 stud, it should give you a solid nailer.

If the intent is to increase the space for insulation, you may want to consider using horizontal strapping instead of simply tacking 2x2s vertically on the studs. It will give you a better thermal break between the inside and outside.

However, remember that in a garage the biggest heat loss is going to be through the garage door (and to a lesser extent, any entry doors or windows.) Make sure you have a well insulated door and good weatherstripping.

Overkill. More heat loss thru ceiling and air infiltration.
