Problem will be that when propane/nat.gas is available again, the price probably won't drop as much as it went up. Seems to be the way things work.

They brought me 150 gal of propane today. The driver told me be glad that I locked the price in at 1.43 a gal because if I had not it would be 5.20 a gal. Thank god we locked the price in.

Same here, though we're on corn power right now, but we're burning through that pretty fast, especially with these days that it's negative w/out the windchill...

 its ok, you can make all the cali jokes you want :D (i am front oregon and just live here now) but even in oregon never seen anything like that. I know a little about red dye diesel as we also have that for "farm equipment use only" and like yours its taxed less than normal diesel.

it does seem (for me) to be crazy that you still heat with this method. seems very "old school" way of doing it.

could you use that same "oil" to run a diesel generator? just wondering

Yes. I have on several occasions used the red diesel from the tank that is for just the tractors and put it in my HHO tank. I also have poured green (Low-sulpher on road diesel) from the local fueling station in the tanks when I've run low. I bought 151 gallons (min delivery) 3 weeks ago, ran out last Monday ordered another 151 gallons after I dumped 15 gals of green in. Hoping that gets me thru this cold break so I can order a fill up when I get my next commission check. Keith

I guess HHO must be a north-eastern type thing, I've never seen it used here in Texas, even out in the sticks. People either have natural gas, propane, electric strip heat and/or heat pumps.

Natural gas is obviously the cheapest around here, it's stupid cheap. Propane, I don't know what the 'bulk' rates are, but when we fill up our tanks for the forklifts we pay about $3.20/gal.

Ok , I want in on this conversation. I really like the info you guys share.
I'm on HHO , 50 year old boiler. $3.59 a gallon last month. But , I pay sales tax on the
total. Do you guys pay tax on Propane?
How about natural gas?
I've checked into propane change over , but the BTU difference doesn't make sense
unless the boiler gives out and I'm forced to change over.
This year I'll be around $2500 total for the season.
My neighbor heats with electric baseboard , the houses were built at the same time.
Their costs are less then mine.
By the way , no sales tax on electric.

No sales tax shows on our electric bill. It may be included , but there is no reference to it. That's why I'm asking about sales tax on propane and natural gas , I don't know the answer. It may be included in the cost. On my heating oil bill , it's listed separate.
Just curious if heating oil is taxed different.

The red stuff around here is generally referred to as Dyed Kerosene here if you buy it at the pumps. Occasionally, I'll supplement my regular HHO fill with six 5 gallon jugs (30 total) from the pump. It cost a little more but it helps take a bite out of those 500-600 dollar deliveries from the truck.

No sales tax per say but there is 3 different "rider" charges on my bill. I think just having sales would be cheaper than all the "extras" on your electric bill.

In Michigan there is sales tax on the actual unit, gas and/or electric, but not on the transporation or wire charge.

Where I live natural gas was not available. I had propane. I paid a lot of money to be cold. I read about an "aggregate" gas company and call them. A meeting was setup at the township hall and had decent attendance. While they were dragging their feet I then got a card in the mail from another small privately owned gas company. They owned a transmission line 1000 feet from my property. Long story short, I got 14 people who said they wanted gas. The company ran a line and only 6 of us got gas. My tap in fees, $600, cost of line from road to house 265' @ $1800. That was less than a year of propane. House is a 1850 sq' ranch (built 1996). Now I'm on a budget $65 a month, heat/cook/hot water. I kept it at 70 day/67 night. I'm warm & happy. So do some research, there are small gas companies out there. The one I'm with has a few locations around the country. It is Northeast Ohio Natural Gas Company. This years plan is to run gas to my garages. Insulate, insulate and more insulate. Good luck, Ken

I paid $2.50 a gallon for propane two weeks ago. Here our local propane company picks up the propane in Corpus Christi about two hundred miles from here. No tax figured on my receipt.

I filled my propane tank back early Jan, about 3 weeks ago, 275 gallons at $2.25/gal here in NM. It is taxed on that amount.

Not sure current price, but even 3 weeks ago was a lot more than the Sept fill price of $1.60/gal.

Well, yeah but isn't your dollar worth about 5 times what ours is? That'd make it more like $200T. :bounce:

Paid $3.64/gal for HHO this weekend for a 100gals had a half tank but wanted to be on the safe side that will last me well into next year. Oil heat is only used as backup to the 2 wood stoves. Looking to go oil free next year with an add on forced hot air wood furnace.

Ive been paying $4.00-$5.00 per gal for propane for years out here I only have that for hot water and cooking. I have 2-250 gallon tanks and can get about a year out of them. Might look into tying the hot water into the wood furnace as well at least that will help off set it for those 5 or 6 months that the stove is lit.

OMG that's more than my whole heating cost for the year :shocking:

how long will that last you??

I can usually get one full heating season from a full tank, but if we get into severely cold temps, which we are having a lot of this winter, I'll need more. I didn't start off the season with a full tank, as we had just under 3/4 as the season began. Although there was probably over a hundred gallons still in the tank, I didn't think it would have lasted til Spring, so I topped off.

I am not tied to any supplier, so I called around for best price, and told them it would take at least 400 gal. 3 of the dozen companies quoted 365.9 if over 400 gal, and pay driver cash or check. Everyone else was 3699 - 375.9. I dealt with same company who I bought from before, and it tool 404+ gallons; and the bank account is $1476 lighter.
How long will 400 gallons last?

Edit: never mind just saw your answer.

Who would have thought that when a third of the country is 30º or more below average temperatures for an extended time period the cost of heating a home will go up...
