Navymech, that Anthol looks great!

I just got this vise (gotta arrange shipment still)..
Holland 24 1/2. (4" jaws). Friend of my parents had it in their shed just sitting there. Got it for $60.

Looks to be in good shape, and the jaws open very wide. Sorry for the blurry pics, I'll get better ones soon.

G20: looks like you better get a big bench for that beast and you might have a little money left after only paying $60 for it. NICE:thumbup::thumbup:

Catsteve: I like those offset vises and man does it look great on that aweome bench you are putting it on. are those Dawn vises manufactured down under or do you know because I see a lot of members down there are putting these on their benches that are new and old?

I already thought it was overpriced at $450, but not sure if that is a crack or if it might have been made that way. that is an awful straight crack if it wasn't made that way. I guess we'll have to hear from somebody that sees it in person.

I did notice that it might have the handle broken off of the nice little wrench on maybe a swivel bolt. I really like the handle on the main screw and you don't see many of those in use today if at all.

JanBuick: nice vise. I wonder if that is for gunsmithing or for maybe making flies to fish with. the swivel handle might need something to make it easier and maybe the one jaw tightened, but that could be a good thing on anybody's bench

that would make some pretty big flys for fishing! :) I second the gunvise idea. look how deep an smooth the jaws are. i really like that vise...

I new I seen this vise before, seen this ad from Holland. Says it is a revolving swivel Vise. Looks old. The one on the stand is missing the hand wheel.

ahhhh...this makes sense. This area was famous for bicycle manufacturing (think Columbia and Schwinn I believe) and the ad shows a bike frame in the vise. Also home to Smith and Wesson as well as the Springfield Armoryamongst others.

Still too $$ for me but at least an interesting vise. I'll have to watch it, if it sits for a couple of weeks perhaps i can move him down. It's literally a mile from from me.

I was thinking maybe there is an add on for the fish flies when I added that to the gun vise idea. or maybe to make really big flies to catch a really big fish.

I would shine that one up and find a spot for it on one of my benches because it looks useful as well as a cool old vise.

not sure what kind of bait we need to use to find us a few Reed 209's, but i'm working on that. anybody have a picture of a 209 to share or do I need to read the 1000 pages of this thread again to find one already posted?

Filson: so you own a 208 and you have pictures of the Reed factory. I think you should call up Grand Coulee and see if they actually do have a tool shop and if you can take a peek at it. by the way has the Rock found a new home?

also found this nice little old Rock Island 141 that has the bolt down through the center. not sure of the age but guessing 1900 ish? sorry I can't load the pictures I have of the bottom showing the bolt and will try to add later.

Picked this up for £20 (which is around $30) . It's a Record 112. Going to clean it up and see what it's like. Might decide then to clean it up and repaint it.

If so, does anyone know any paint that is a close match?

As far as I know - no 209 is owned by anyone here on GJ and I have scoured the net trying to find a picture of one and came up empty. Time might change that.

As for the dam - they do indeed have a visitor center that has some of the big wrenches, jack hammers, etc that they used on display. I did not see any vise in their pics but will check some day. It's about a 3 hours drive so will have to wait to make a day of it with the kids.

On a plus note, we should close on our new house in mid March, and I'll finally be able to fly back and get a moving truck (or 3) and get all my stuff again. Miss my tools, hell, I miss having a comfortable bed to sleep on haha.

Hey Everyone:

I need some input.

What does everything think of Wilton verti-lock machine vises?

We are talking about possibly having a promo to win one of these, but I want to know how people feel about that brand and type first!

Thanks!

What's the nature of your business that your doing a promo for? What sort of customer-base are you hoping to attract?

Very nice, I like Records a lot. Maybe somebody has a better suggestion but when I'm refinishing Records I use Krylon Oxford Blue.

Thanks for the suggestion. I like records and was looking out for one for a little while. Not sure how I did on price but happy with my purchase.

All the old vices I see seem to be records so they must make 'em good!

I'm not sure yet. We just started talking about it today. I just wanted to see what other people think of this item first to see if it would even be worth it.

Thanks.

Hard to answer if it'd be worth it (from a business standpoint) without knowing much about your business. :dunno:

If I were to, for example, own a local hardware store and wanted to try and grab more customer base, a promo idea may be worthwhile, especially if the things you could win in the promo was something actually worthwhile and useful that sparked interest enough in the local population to come check it out. But you'd also need to calculate out your demographics for the area. Is a decided amount of people in the area working in a particular industry, or even one big employer?

If you have a rather large concentration of people that are say, working for a large manufacturing company building heavy equipment implements... I would call the company, explain who you (hardware store owner) and that you're wanting to do a promo and you'd like to know what brands of equipment they use most in the shop. If they threw out names like Dake, Wilton, etc I would assume that a lot of the people working their are familiar with them and that will already create some 'brand-recognition' for you. What if they only use, say Yost vises? A Wilton may not be preferred as much by the locals because they're familiar, comfortable and have relied on Yost to earn their living. Offering up a Yost model in this situation would most likely create a higher participation rate.

Also, if your in a smaller community - you need to decide how many potential customers you could gain. Calculate out how many transactions you had last year, and the amount of net income you earned, and divide that out to find out what your average income-per-customer is. Decide how much $ you want to put into promo ideas, and figure out what your ROI would be to earn that money back.

Demographics will also tell you the average income in the area... I don't think I'd have much luck selling my 8" Reed in downtown manhattan next to a designer jeweler. If I were in a place with a stronger concentration of tool-nuts and do-it-yourselfers that like tools, I could probably gain more interest in the item.

If your running an online business, I would check your site stats and (assuming you have Adsense or something) I would look at your CTR and see what advertisements are being clicked on the most. Has a DeWalt advertisement seen much heavier CTR's than other advertisements? Perhaps that could be a look into what your viewers interests are and than offer a promo in accordance to what you find.

Is that Wilton machinist vise a good promo item? Um, it has financial value. I am a ******** vise-junkie and own over 30 vises... however I do zero machining work and if I were to win it through a promo, it'd be up for sale on ebay that night. That lack of interest in the product, probably wouldn't create much interest in your business, would it? I'd wake up the next Saturday morning and head to the hardware store I've always went to and spend the money I made on Ebay. *shrugs* If I were a machinist on the other hand, I'd probably love to own it.

It's hard to give you a valuable answer to your question without you supplying some basic information to base an answer off of.

Rustoleum True Blue. I had to trace that back from a Canadian retailer selling the same colors under different names. I'm not sure what its called on your side of the pool but thats really close to what was on them

Dawn products are now a mix of china/Australia manufacture. i believe the high end products are still made in Australia.

check em out here

the 'super grade' vices are GUARANTEED AGAINST BREAKAGE. hmmm .
it certainly is useful being able to put a workpiece vertical in the vice.

Re: google fail

Inspired by you viseaholics at GJ, I'm going to try to restore my grandfather's old Craftsman vise.

IMG_20140127_174052.jpg

It's a model 5249, but I haven't been able to find much info on it. From what I could find, I'm thinking it was probably made a bit after WWII.

The base seems to be missing a spacer of some sort-- if you tighten down the base bolt until it's snug, the vise no longer rotates on the base. I'm thinking some kind of sleeve (nylon or brass?) will remedy that. I think it also used to have a pipe clamp (I think I still have half of it somewhere and there's a spacer/washer still on the shaft).

The jaws are worn pretty smooth. I took a quick look at it and I think they are screwed in.

I figure I'll strip it myself and hit it with a few coats of heavy duty paint. I can't see any evidence that it's ever been repainted so I will probably try to use a similar color or maybe go with a blue-gray to fit in with the color scheme of my garage.

Looks like one other guy here had the same vise, but he made one post about it and left. If anybody has any other information that might help me, especially where I could source pipe jaws, replacement jaws or the aforementioned spacer or any ideas about what the original color might have been) please let me know. Thanks!!

I pulled apart 2 different vises, identical to your grandfathers and found no center bushing. Its possible the bolt was replaced long ago and is two short, therefore making up before bottoming out. You can always put a few pieces of lead shot between the hole and bolt face. That will stop the bolt short and will compress until you get your desired looseness.

As for a color, the best i've found is Rustoleum Industrial Choice Regal Blue. The vises had a wrinkle finish, similar to Kennedy tool boxes and were that color of blue. I have one, somewhere, with 100% original paint on it. Thats how i got my match of color

Here is todays acquisition from an early morning estate sale. Rock Island 573 which included a really stout pedestal stand. Too bad i did't have my jackhammer with me to get it out.

The vise is in great shape with the exception of a blown out jaw insert screw hole but ill fix that in a while.

If your customer base was machinist, then yeah I'm sure they would love that.

However if it was a garage group it would kind of be overkill, nicest vise on a drill press, that's for sure!

A Wilton 400S or 500S would probably be more appropriate to the more general crowd.

Just my two cents...

Yeah we have Rustoleum over here but limited in supply/stockists.

http://search.diy.com/search#?p=Q&s...02542&method=and&isort=score&view=grid&srt=12

Have no true blue, closest appears deep blue.

I will visit the store after I have cleaned it up today as I think it's definitely going to need a repaint and check out your suggestion and also balane and see which looks the closest match.

What a collection  The picture is deceiving as to the size of the vises.
That Columbian is no small one either. It hard to top an 8" Morgan and I don't know but I would think that would be the largest size.

Maybe we can get Demo's man to cast us a few of those to.

I think they are just a rich man's Wilton, But I've got to have one.

The Bugatti vise falls into the category of "Garage Art"...

I, however prefer this---:3gears:
