Need help choosing a heater. Trying to research all heaters, not just those in the title, but am getting more confused the more I research. I just want a good reliable heater that doesn't cost an arm & a leg. I will not be in the garage all the time but will likely keep it at a minimum temperature then warm it up as neede to work. I believe I need aobut a 70-80K BTU LP heater.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Garage Specs: 30 X 40 with 11' ceilings.
Ceiling material: 7/16 OSB
Overhead doors: 2 (1=16' X 8' & 1 8' X 8')
Windows: 2 (36" X 54")
Walk Door: 1 (36" X 80")
Insulation: Walls are R13 covered by 7/16 OSB; Ceiling will be insulated with at least R19.

Thanks in advance.

have similar shop cu ft as your garage...mine is 20x60x12'ceiling (open trusses), no insulation, however 3/4 of the building sidewalls are underground, walls are 24" masonry (old root cellar), one 8' garage door, no other wdos or doors....hvac folks spec'd Beacon Morris 105btu unit, works well, heats up from zero to 50* in 1/2 hour...ceiling/roof trusses need to be insulated however, fwiw....

Make sure parts are available locally. If you purchase it from a home improvement store, they will not have any parts. I have heard of people waiting over 3 weeks for parts.

Mr. Heater/Big Maxx and Modine/Hot Dawg both popular heaters here, Big Maxx probably a bit cheaper in price. Mr. Heater has great customer service. Most buy from Northern Tool with usually the cheapest price.

Regardless, you didn't mention your Insulation specs. If not insulated (or partially) spend money on Insulation first. It should be your number one priority before you heat (or cool).

Consider/research your venting and gas hook up location and costs and Inquire with your town on local codes.

Use the search engine as there are tons of threads on the subject.

Every gas guy I spoke to about heating had nothing good to say about the Mr Heater.. They prefer Modine or Reznor.. I just installed a Modine 45k btu from a gas supply store cheaper than the Mr heater would have cost from a big box store.

How much did you pay for the Modine 45K? Natural gas or LP? What model?

I've been pricing heaters and never see the Modine priced anywhere near as low as the Mr Heater/Big Maxx.

I purchased and installed a Beacon Morris 75000 btu furnace in my 30x50x12 shed around Christmas time. My building is insulated r13 in walls and about R20 in ceiling.I man door, one 12x12 sliding door, and no windows. This heater will easily heat my building. If it were insulated better with a better door it would use less fuel. Great little heater!

I purchased a beacon morris unit from menards when it was on sale this last fall. It was something like $100 off normal price. It's the 75k unit. My shop is 32x44, with 12.5 walls, R19 walls, and R 45ish ceiling, one man door, two small windows and a 16wx10H garage door. When it was -30F out it was 41 in the shop, and when I turned the heat up that cold day it warmed up to 50F no problems, any more and I get warm, and I usually have coveralls on.

Thanks mrpowderkeg, that's good information. I know it gets a little colder in Bismarck then it does here in SW Missouri so I hope I never see -30 here. I have been in Bismarck when it was -37 though, no thanks.

Take a poll here and the Mr.Heater wins out. Modine and Reznors are great heaters but most opt for the less expensive Big Maxx.

Big Maxx had issues a few revisions back but have greatly improved. Their known for there great customer service. Mine has worked flawless, two years running.

The Big Maxx comes in at $490 @ Northern.

It seems like they all work well. I'm quit happy with my 2 Beacon Morris 75K. The biggest problem is people getting the wrong size heater for there application. Size it right and I think any will do you very well.
