A few of you know I've been looking for a relatively heavy-duty U.S.-made vice.

Came across a CL listing today for a storage facility sale from 3-5 today only. One of the pics was a top view of a large vise sitting in the corner. Hmmm. Called the guy and he said it was U.S. made. Double hmmm?

Said it was a Reed 2C (4 1/2 inch jaw) and wanted $75 for it. It was almost an hour away but jumped in the gas getter instead of the SUV and off I went. Drove more or less legal ;) and arrived just before 5:00.

Operated well an asked if he'd take $60. He said he knew I drove a ways so yes. Probably goes without saying but I'm a happy camper.

Great score! Is it fully intact?

Really nice.
Great patina, man, I'd go with it as is.
Maybe a little WD40 clean-up (it is a good cleaner too).
Congratulations, I know it's hard to score a good one.

Thanks guys. Yes, it is fully intact. Jaws are probably half worn. Swivels freely and the swivel rods are straight. It opens and closes without binding.

Relative to the "fever"; I've been looking through some of the resto threads here so "the treatment" may not be far off. We'll see how it goes with the rest of projects that await me. I did tear down two twin dirt bikes last year and have rebuilt one of them so far. So yes, it's in my blood I suppose!

With the prices that vises are starting to go for, there is definite suckage happening here, and YOU are responsible for it! Enjoy!

That's in good shape . Among Reeds those combos are my favorite.
I'd rather have a 4 inch jaw combo than a 6 " jaw standard model.
Nice vise !

Love that Reed vise. Pipe jaws, swivel base and in good shape and only $60. I did notice you were trying to buy another US made vise shortly after getting this one so is your vise hunting become a vice?

Welcome to the group from one of those that has the same bug.

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice!

Thanks again guys.

I've noticed this "suckage" term is somewhat prevalent on this forum. First saw it a CL-Score-You-**** thread or something like that. It seems to be used in an endearing sense...I think when someone does well.

You all have been encouraging and a few have provided good advice so I guess that means you all ****! :p. Am I understanding correctly?

Man, I hope not...though must admit enjoy the looking for a diamond in the ruff stuff.

Come to think of it, I could use a smaller vise to compliment this monstrosity...

I didn't waste anytime putting the Reed to good use. The vise came in very handy while replacing u-joints this weekend. Even got to use the pipe jaws to hold the driveshaft.

While no cake walk, must say having a larger vice made the job much easier :)

Just be careful using a vise as a press. I busted my dad's old swivel jaw vise that way many years ago...

I started to use it as the press but couldn't get enough oomph on it to pop the joints free. Suprised it didn't work but didn't want to resort to adding a pipe over the vice handle for extra leverage either.

Ended up using essentially a beefy c-clamp that's made for this job. The vise just held the driveshaft. Like most jobs, this one took 2-3 times longer than I thought. Oh well, it's all part of the fun!
