I'm sure this topic has been covered but who has an lcd tv in their garage and has a "cold garage"
I have a 13" old tube tv in my garage but lately it's been buzzing and I quite don't trust to leave it plugged in anymore
My garage gets as cold as 30* especially this time of the year. Was thinking of getting a cheap small lcd tv from walmart or craigslist and mounting on the wall
Will the cold harm it? I do turn my kerosene torpedo heater on from time to time when I'm out there and that makes all the metal surfaces get condensation in them so I don't know if that would hurt it also.

Either way I'm tossing my tube tv. It has given me many many years of pleasure but I just don't trust it anymore with the god awful buzz sound it makes

I wouldn't worry about the cold. I leave an LCD TV in my 5th wheel. Every winter it gets below freezing temps. Never a problem.

Condensation - not so sure about that one.

I want to do the same. Thought i read it was not good for the LCD. Need heat.

Nah, I think that's the plasma.

LCD should be okay...not if it's antarctica (or super freezing all the time) though. 30 degrees isn't bad. I have an lcd computer monitor in my garage and have no problems with freezing temperatures.

I have a 27in LCD mounted in my Snap-On hutch, and that's sitting out in the garage at 19º right now. When I turn it on in the morning, it'll be just fine. When I move it to my new job in a week, people will look at me like I'm an *******, but it'll still be fine.

I've have a 42" Vizio LCD in my unheated garage for a year... Winter temps here have hit 17... Garage sits at about 30.

Not a single problem to date!

Regular LCD uses a cold cathode fluorescent tube to provide the back light. But unlike regular fluorescent tubes, these work pretty well in the cold.
LED LCD would be just fine in the cold.

I picked up an LCD at a pawn shop for $20 to replace the $3 garage sale CRT I had in the shop. It works fine in the cold (I've tried it as low as 20F), and I'm glad to get all that shelf space back. It gave me room for another tool box. :)

Because LCD tv's put out less heat than a CRT, and because they're thinner, they have less vent holes on horizontal surfaces, so they collect less shop dust inside. Something to think about.

I have a 24" crappy Sony out there. It survived fine during out last cold blast, -7*f and below.

It's pretty blurry when it's that cold, but still survived just fine. I also get lots of condensation in my garage, because my ******* dryer vents into it. In nearly a year it's been fine, even getting a considerable amount of condensation.

Really gotta fix that problem.

CVS was selling an off brand for like 40 bucks a couple of weeks ago. Might want to check there...no hdmi on that one. Probably be around the same size though (13"/monitor size). Better than paying 200 though.:dunno:

Over here....
I wouldn't worry about the cold.

I'd worry about a socket flying off an impact. A chunk flying off when using a hammer. The errant nail from a nail gun.

Turns them unto 'parts' TV's for Craigslist.

I have this 17" dynex brand in the garage. It's been in here for 4 years. My garage is not heated yet so it gets cold. It works perfectly. I keep it covered with the bag it came in just to help it live longer. I did drop it once so now I have a thin green line on one side running from top to bottom. It doesn't bother me at all since it's a garage tv. I have it on a swivel/telescoping arm. I think it's lcd and was around $75 at best buy.

Cold won't harm it. This one has been near the door for a few years with no problem. Also you can get them very cheap today. I have a Roku box which lets me stream Pandora, Amazon, any other things without needing a cable box.

Best Buy has their 42" LED on deal of the day for $249. It's one day only. Their house brand is Insignia. I think these are a re-branded LG.

Just ordered one for the garage.

32" Vizio in mine. Gets down to around 30° in there I'd guess.

No problems at all!

Just wanted to give an update. It's been 2 years now....2 winters and this tv works great. I have turned it on with some really cold days in here and it doesn't seem affected one bit.

I would like to add a TV to my garage, but don't have the exposed wall space for such because I cover the walls with storage and stuff. I have one ideal location that I could mount one, but I store blue paper towels there. I'm sure I could relocate that and make room.

It's more just the hassle of splitting the cable line and running one in to it, then using a cable converter. I hate paying for those things. But I do have a spare so, that's probably the best choice. Throw a Chromecast or Roku on it and I'll have access to all my other media content. TV's are good for background noise while in the shop. I don't need a big screen as I'm more interested in the audio while I work. Might have to look at something like a 19" or so.

I don't have a lot of empty wall space in the garage, was considering an under-cabinet -style TV. But then I decided to build a pivoting frame for an iPad.

If you don't care about 1080p or the refresh rate, and are just looking for a decent TV for some background noise a lot of the 32'' LEDs are going for pretty cheap.

32" Insignia 720 LED for $129 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insigni...=8575135&loc=0&productCategoryId=abcat0101001
32" RCA 720 LED for $129 http://www.walmart.com/ip/44798088?...33824258850905910148&affillinktype=10&veh=aff

The prices are definetly coming down on the midsize TVs. I picked up a 32" Proscan at HH Gregg for $138 during a President's day sale.

I have a 42" Vizio smart TV in garage. I ran cable out there but honestly, I watch Youtube car videos way more than TV. So depending what you watch, you don't have to have cable.

My last two garages in cold-ish climates had computer monitors in them and neither were ever damaged by the cold. I don't know if there's anything different about a tv.

It's not so much that I even watch the tv in the garage....but it's more of a feeling of "stuff happening" around me and the noise I hear from it. It's hard to explain. I can't work out there in complete solitude.

Hell sometimes I have the TV on but its muted and I'll have the radio on......makes no sense but in sure some can understand where I'm comming from and what I mean

It's background for some while others enjoy complete silence. A little rock n roll or a movie I've seen before but just listening to it helps me keep my sanity by relaxing me.

No reason to explain it to me, I know exactly how you feel.

I had a 47 inch Toshiba LCD that I had ideas about putting in the garage/workshop. But then I thought that maybe it would be too distracting and I wouldn't be paying as close attention to what I was doing as I should be. I finally decided to give the television to my sister instead and I am kind of glad I did.

Maybe I am weird or something, but to my mind the idea of having a garage/workshop is that you can go there and do some work that really needs to be done. If you want to work, go to the garage/workshop and work. If you want to watch television, go in the house and watch it. I have a radio in the garage/workshop that I turn on only occasionally, mostly when I am cleaning or putting stuff away, things of that nature. When I am working on a project I don't turn it on, partly because I don't want to be distracted, and partly because when the table saw, a router, the shaper, equipment like that is running, it is a bit noisy and I can't hear the radio anyway.
