I picked up the steel for my rack design last night. Now I have a small pile of "gold" in the shop and can't wait to start making drops and cut-offs.

Found an angle iron frame in my scrap pile outside about 20"x24" that became the base of the stand. Spent time cleaning rebar of light rust and started the bending and welding process. Not going for a huge thing- trying to keep the footprint small, but it has to have some size to keep it from being tippy.
And sure enough, the rebar does indeed have "W" on it. I had never noticed the letter codes on rebar before. Learned something new thanks to you guys.
I wish I could get this stuff already cleaned. I've eaten up a wire brush in a grinder cleaning this stuff. If I didn't want it shiny silver, I guess I could just wipe it down and call it good. I'm not sure I want to paint it since it's going to get beaten up by metal bits.

Finally got back to the cutoff cart project and finished adding some welded wire mesh / screen to the sides and dividers.
I went with vertical storage in the back, smaller vertical storage in front of that on an elevated section, and then the four litter baskets to hold small stuff in front. Clear bins up on top mostly because there was space.
The best part of this for me was leaving a 24" deep gap in the middle from front to back that holds all the sheet metal and plate material so it's not sitting against a wall out of sight and forgotten. Now I can see exactly what I have in one spot.
It's not pretty, but it sure does hold a ton of stuff in one compact area that is also mobile as a cart. Everything in my garage is on wheels except cabinets and shelving. It makes cleaning the garage so much easier.

That's basically like I was talking about except I was talking PVC. I like your design as it would be easy to weld the tubes to a bottom plate.

Well, you guys got me inspired. I have went out in the shop a half dozen times to clean up my drop pile but, once I get out there and look at all of it, I stop. I have no where to put it that is easily accessible and orderly...
I got to thinking about all of the buckets I am using right now as containers and decided to design a mobile rack.
I measured up a couple of buckets (I have a few different sizes) and modeled up an average size in UG this morning. I had an idea already in my head so I ran with it on the computer. Once the bucket was modeled the rest was easy.
This is a side view. The rack is 24 inches wide.
Here is a front view. It is 42 inches long and about 48 inches high. Six buckets fit comfortably with room for three more in the middle if I decide to go that way. Right now I am thinking I will make this middle bay a vertical rack for tubing.
The buckets set in, and on, 3/4 x 3/4 angle at about a 30deg tip.
A close up of the casters. You can see I am also building in a lot of narrow racks for long lengths, whether sheet metal or tubing, Should work very well. I plan to put steel on the bottom and aluminum higher up.
I will start doing details tomorrow and probably order steel the end of the week. This looks kind of complicated but its not. All of the pieces are easy to cut with many of them used more then once. Can't wait to get going on this!

I remember this thread from a few months ago and kinda glad it came back up. This is the kind of storage that always takes ingenuity to a higher level.
I don't have alot so I stick it in a tote with a lid. The tote is bolted to a HF dolley so it rolls out from under the bench. It sits right beside the chop saw.
