I have this plan of taking a set of 1/2" deep sockets and chucking them in my lathe and removing roughly the last 1/3 of each of the sockets. I plan on chamfering the inside edge of the socket just a mite to give them more of a factory look.
For those that have not figured it out, I am going to make a set of semi-deep sockets. A few years back Snap-on and Sears both sold sets of semi deeps. I have standard and metrics in 3/8" and a set of standards in the 1/4" size SAE. That was as far as I got, Snap-on quit selling them in all sizes I think. And Sears only sold them in the 3/8" drive.
I intended to get 1/4" metrics, and sets of both in 1/2" drive as well but since they are no longer made I decided to make my own.
The hitch is whatever brand I get needs to accept the hex very deep in the socket, some brands are not made that way, the older Craftsman sockets are. I am not picky about the brand, but I would like to see the set cover the sizes of 1/2" through at least an inch and more if possible.
The way to figure out if your sockets are the set I am looking for is to visualize the last 1/3 of the socket as gone, will it still function as a socket? If so you might have the set I am looking for.
I would prefer Craftsman or better, and I do not care if they are a bit knocked around. Any old USA brand would due, but I would actually prefer to stay away from the best brands such as Snappy or Mac unless they are just beat. I would not be comfortable doing that with a more high end brand of tool.
Let me know what you might have and how much.
