I thought it must have been welded on the back of a Bugatti at that price.

It's a real beauty though.

Because someone who has enough money that the cost doesn't matter wants it as collectable art, not for a working vise. No one buys a Bugatti car for north of $1,000,000 and drives it to WalMart. A Royale will bring $10,000,000 or more and I went all the way to Mulhouse, France and paid to see three of them in the Musee Schlumpf. They have more than a hundred Bugatti as well as a Bugatti vise.

BTW, there are more than a hundred hits an hour, so it will go for at least his $7,800 BIN

So, this vise really is big $$$ then? Maybe not $6k, but not 100 dollar item either huh?

not to hijack, but I'm new to ebay---is there a way to see if there is a reserve or if it has been met on items? Using the vise ad for example...

Just because it was listed for $6,000 doesn't mean that anyone will actually bid on it. I could list my empty Pepsi can that I just drank for $15,000.

It was just listed and no one has bid on it yet.

You'd have to be logged into your eBay account to see past auction results. Search for an item then choose "Completed listings" from the search options on the left side for auctions that have ended, sold or not sold. Choose "Sold listings" to return results of auctions that have actually sold. I tend to look at sold listings only as that tells me what people are actually paying for items, not what sellers want to be paid.

Its worth whatever someone will pay for it. Most of these ridiculous auctions simply get set to auto-relist and never sell. Oh it says Ferrari/Bugatti on it, must be worth its weight in gold, right? Wrong. Basically sellers like those watch way too much American Pickers and get visions of grandeur about the junk they have in their possession.

That vise is a pile of scrap as far as im concerned. Doesn't even look like it has a base to mount it to a bench. Useless.

I know the whole "worth what someone will pay"....but an old Packard is definitely worth more than a 1989 Hyundai. I was just asking if this really was a collectable/rare whatever.

Me personally, I'd rather have my old Prentiss with the script writing. I'd give 40-100 bux for the Bugatti vise, and that's only because of the small cool factor I see in it being one I don't have.

But $6k...no, I'd buy a AICS wrapped long shot...

No need to get into a bidding war over an original... The guys that make this *very* nice reproduction are serious Bugatti restorers in the UK. They'll sell ya a new one for £3500 ($5870)...:eyecrazy:

And, as Packard V8 said, for anyone that gets a chance to visit the French National Motor Museum (the former Schlumpf Collection) in Mulhouse, I can *highly* recommend it.

The seller has a handful of other items at high $$$$$$$. Most he's had for 30+ years so may be looking to help with retirement.

I'm a firm believer in something is worth what someone else is willing to pay. Heck, I've a seen a rifle sell for near $100K and am sure some have gone well over that. If the guy can get it, more power to him. Certainly (or at least probably) wouldn't be a user; collector only which our conventional thinking of "worth" then becomes very highly subjective because the list of potential list of buyers becomes exceedingly small.

A couple of years ago our car club got to tour Arturo Keller's collection (multiple x Pebble Beach winner) and restoration shop. One of the things that impressed me the most was that each of the workbenches had a Bugatti vice bolted to it!

As 4xdog noted, even the reproductions are going for nearly $6k and they want half of that up front!

I will not pretend that I understand all the craziness about that vise, but lord if I had 6k I would buy a mill & lathe and be forever happy.

I guess that vise is for the top class of wealthy people that own most of the USA.

Since this vise is the "Real Deal" from the Bugatti Works, some one will buy that piece of historical garage art, and put it on his workbench...which is probably made out of sterile Mahogany, with a draft beer spigot in the right rear corner...

And then he'll show you his Type 35 Gran Prix racer...

If you've never seen a Bugatti, think "work of art" on wheels...

In forty years, that vise will probably be worth north of 50 large...

Whoever buys it will mount it to their Bugatti workbench in their Bugatti inspired garage housing a collection of Bugattis only to have their Bugatti mechanic put air in the tires for them.

Some guy with a couple of Bugattis in his collection will buy it. Hell, if I had a couple of Bugattis in my collection, I'd buy it.

in case we are still talking about this vise when the ad on EBay expires or sells I thought i'd add the pictures to the thread.

it does have some interesting parts for a vise, but I have to agree with others that a nice restored 70's Chevy pickup or a new machine in the shop might be money better spent. do you think this vise might really be worth $50,000 in a few years??

Edit: sorry I couldn't figure out how to get the bigger pictures.

At first I was shocked at the price, but if a repo is almost as much, the price can't be too far off. Not that I would buy it unless I thought I had a real good chance of flipping for a big profit. No one that comes into my store would be a prospect though:(

lol, If I had the money to even think about spending 6k on a vise, I'd beat the living **** out of it to make someone cry. Mostly it's because I don't like euro cars, and I won't ever have the money to do it.

In reality, I'd be more likely to buy 6000 snow cones than that vise given the option.

I guess it boils down to there is an *** for every seat, and someone out there wants it 6k worth of badly.

I believe someone will make the minimum bid at least on this. Originals of these are highly sought after, and if a reproduction can sell for almost as much as the starting bid, it should give you an idea of the demand. In his ad he mentions that he has a set of Bugatti workbench legs as well. Those will probably bring even more cash than the vice.

You know what's funny, is I get "39 people an hour are visiting this.." and it was in the 30's yesterday too.

Only 27 watchers! (I'm not one of them...)

Good thinking drivesitfar. Here's the Ebay description and full size pics:

"This is an unrestored Bugatti Factory Vise I have owned for more than thirty years. It was given to a private racer in the U.K. in 1936 and I bought it from the estate. It is in excellent condition and comes with an extra set of jaws, surface plate and securing pin. I also have two original factory dealer signs in excellent condition, four Bugatti table legs and an as new U.K. Bugatti Club vise from the 60's. Can ship anywhere. Feel free to contact me with any questions."

Hey guys: Just informed the seller of this thread. Thought he may find it entertaining or at the very least to know that it is generating additional exposure to potential buyers :)

They didnt have bases nor did they need them, the vise body itself is threaded to receive what looks like the extra "handle." Realistically, this isnt a maintenance item where someone would/should be beating on it heavily, its from the factory and was used primarily for workholding while hand-fitting/filing parts. Those vises also are usually pretty tightly fit like a machine vise is, not a bench vise.

I havent seen one sell in probably a decade or so, but the last one I saw sold without the bench for ~$500. Given the explosion in vintage car prices since then, I could easily see it selling for a few grand if the seller throws in the bench, without it Id still suspect $1k wouldnt be unrealistic.

Every time you cast a line into the river you have the hope of catching a big one. He might be there, he might not. But if he's there, you better have the bait he likes.

And it doesn't even swivel!!!!:sad::sad::sad:

oh, yes, it does swivel.....see how it mounts

whole different world folks.....

and the people in automotive exotica sure aren't watching "American Pickers" either

J.B. had 2 Bugatti Royales in his museum......you think he worried about whether or not things appreciated in value?????

he was worth $4.5 billion

how about the Frenchman ~25 years ago that flew EVERY Ferrari GTO and the owner to his Chateau in France for a drive around his private track and to pose for a group photo

think what the tab for that was?

like I said, whole different world folks.....
