Hose Reel Loc.jpg

Hello, I am installing a hose reel in my garage and looking for input on the best location. Hopefully you are able to see the attachment, I'm no computer guru. My initial thought was location "B" on the shared sidewall of the garage and house. The compressor lives in the basement so I plant to poke the airline out through the floor system into the garage wall.
Advantages are: easily accessible, close to the driveway for working outside.

I then got to thinking about where the car is primarily located and to unwind the hose, I'll be pulling sideways on the reel. Would option "A" be better so I can pull the hose straight out? Does it not matter?

Lets hear your thoughts

While we're at it, my harbor freight hose reel states it is also suitable for water. Anyone ever wash their car or run a pressure washer off an air hose? My concern is if I got another one for that purpose, the flow would be greatly restricted by the smaller diameter.

Thanks

I like position B myself. You will want to get the hose out to the driveway on occasion and being closer to the garage door will help one day. It is also close the door into the house so that when you are doing things in there like a brad nailer or whatever, it is still close.

I mounted my reel on the ceiling. This location is central to all locations in the garage, keeps the hose readily available and off the floor. I can reach up and take ahold of the hose and work inside the garage on any side of the car or take it outside. When I am done using it, it reels up out of the way and I don't have to take up valuable wall space.

Just be sure to mount the reel to a wide board that will allow fastening the reel to at least two ceiling joists with lag bolts. You don't want that heavy reel falling off the ceiling onto your head or expensive car.

Location B, on a swivel so you aren't pulling sideways. I know I have seen homemade set ups on here for just that. Made out of regular door hinges I believe.

I have always kept a coil up hose at location A, above the work bench, so that it is never on the floor or in the way.

Put the reel at location B. You can still run a line for a coil up hose at A.

Don't ask.
I'd put the hose reel close to the overhead door on a hinged bracket so it could be used in garage or on the driveway. Tee off a hard line drop to the workbench.

you guys really got me thinking now with the bracket that pivots and keeping it at B. Ford33- do you ever find yourself dragging the hose on the top of the car with it mounted to the ceiling? I would think that a car parked underneath the hose reel would be getting its corners rubbed off unless you tied the hose off to the side

Any input on the air hose for water?

Thanks for all the ideas!

That is how I did mine. Out of the way and the hose never drags thru anything on the floor.

I have three Reelcrafts. The one in my older garage has been in the same spot, on the roof post, up next to the ceiling on the left side of the car about midway, for almost 35 years and I've found it to be a very good spot. That would be close to the B spot in your diagram. I mounted, but not plumbed the ones in the new garage, yet.

I'd probably put the reel in position "B", then run some hard line to the work bench and another drop near the overhead door opposite of "A".

Put one by the door and one on your lift.

I don't know if he's putting in a lift, but here's where I'm putting the 2 Reelcrafts in my new garage.

I have mine mounted in the ceiling about where you show the front bumper in your plan.
It is never dragging on the car and with 50' it easily reaches the cars in the driveway as well. I have a drop with a small coil hose at the bench as well.

If 2 reals are not out of the question I would put one on each side of the car location B and opposite. Over the workbench I would just come out with a QD for a coil hose.

Speaking of coil hoses has anyone found a good coil hose that will stay retracted above head height if setup dangling from the ceiling.

This is how I would set it up. An outlet at position A with a coil up hose, and the reel mounted closer to the garage door. Depending on how your garage is setup inside, maybe even mount the reel on the opposite corner of A.

I mounted mine between my two overhead doors. This allows easy use on either side of the door and for outdoor use; however, it is on a fixed bracket, not a swivel.

I do have my oxy/acetylene hose mounted on a reel with a swivel bracket and that works quite well. The follow pics show the swivel mounting bracket.

In your case, I'd mount the reel one side or the other of the O/H door and, as others have suggested, hard pipe to your workbench. Another good option would be to mount the reel on the ceiling one one side or the other of the O/H door.

My bench is along the same wall as your "B" position is. I have a 25' reel at the back of the garage (position "A") that allows use at the workbench or under the hood of a car in the garage, a 50' reel on the side wall of the garage by the roll up door (similar to position "B") that allows me to service vehicles in the driveway & a coil hose on a non-locking tool retract reel above the bench with a blow nozzle on it for quick dustings of the work area. I just reach up & grab the nozzle, pull it down to blow things off & let it go. Retracts by itself.

Thanks all for helping me make up my mind. I will place it on the sidewall near the overhead door. I have come up with a design for a swinging bracket that will be shared in the future. For simplicity sake, I will limit myself to one air hose, because in the garage I really only occasionally use an impact or an inflator. Most of my air use occurs in the basement.

I am seriously thinking about putting a connector for a coil-up hose in both of my bays at the front, then mount a reel in between my to garage doors so I can also reach outside.

Is anybody using coil-up hoses in a couple of places? I am going to run a race track around the shop with RapidAir anyway.

I going to install and use at least one at my main work bench, but because of this great weather we've been having, my job has kept me at the plant and out of my garage for a while now.
