Angle grinder vibration?

I have a problem with vibration causing wrist pain when using larger angle grinders i.e. 7" or 9". Both grinders are relatively unused, unworn as far as I can tell, no noticeable play in shafts or bearings etc. Both grinders run fine with no disc fitted.Anyone know of a way to check/balance metal cutting and grinding discs at home ? (I also experience the same pains when riding a racing bicycle or a modern sports motorbike so I know my old wrists are not the best but just want to try to make angle grinding not so sore afterwards)

It certainly sounds like your grinding wheel is out of balance. Have you tried using a different brand? They are none perfect, and there's not much you can do with an out of balance one, but maybe you'd have better luck with something from Norton or 3M.

Have you dropped either of the grinders? That can throw them off balance. Also check the disc as yaidunno suggested.

The bigger ones obviously have larger motors. Maybe your wrists are just feeling it more now:dunno:? My newer 4 1/2" Dewalt vibrates a lot more than my older one did. It's done so since the day I took it out of the box. I sold the old (fully working) one for next to nothing because it wasn't as clean as the new one. What a mistake that was:sad:.

My memory could be faulty but I seem to recall no vibration problems with the originally supplied Makita branded discs, have tried Bosch and other German discs to no avail, not sure if Norton or 3M discs are available here in Ireland so will have to see, thanks, Al.

Two suggestions.
1) get an anti-vibration side handle. Better angle grinders in larger sizes (Metabo, Fein, Bosch) often come with these, but it does nothing for the vibration in the grinder body.
2) get an anti-vibration grinder. I've seen larger grinders with a balancing ring.

Thanks for the above info, will have to see what's available here in Ireland ( you guys in the USA are spoilt, when it comes to what is available !!!).

Are you using an adapter kit to mount the disc to the grinder, or is the disc you're using already have the hub bonded to the disc?

This disc here is the kind with the hub permanently bonded to the disc:

This disc here is the kind that uses a reusable adapter kit:

I've never seen the type with the hub permanently bonded to the disc here in Ireland, will have to make enquiries! All the discs I've used use the reusable adaptor kit as supplied with the tools when new which seems to correctly locate the disc concentrically, i.e. no radial 'slop'
Thanks for the above, Al.

If you say the grinder runs smooth without the disc mounted on, then that leads me to suspect that either the disc is out of balance, or the mounting adapter is out of balance. Which brand of grinding discs are you using?

It's got to be the discs. Better discs tend to run more true.

Good anti-vibration gloves couldn't hurt either.

Exactly. Buy a good pair of padded anti-vibe gloves, they feel wierd at first but will work wonders. If you're doubtful just try wrapping some rubber (maybe an old bicycle tube) around the grinder where you hold it.

Sometimes it's the disc, sometimes it's the mounting hardware or backing plate

Try a new quality disc and then try the backing plate and hardware if it's still vibrating

I use the SAIT grinding disks in both the 4 1/2" and 7" sizes regularly and don't have any vibration problem with them. They are excellent. Sometimes you can find good deals on them on ebay or Amazon.
