doesn't look like any hooks on mine. I did notice that maybe my owner had a stick or rod holding it shut instead of a lock with all the scraping on either side of the front of mine.

the mystery continues and some of the great minds on GJ are at the point.

keep searching because Boiler has almost doubled his amount of posts in one night since he joined a couple years ago.

What started as casual reading about this toolbox has turned into a real mystery especially now that 3 of you have turned up the same box but there seems to be no reference anywhere about who made it. A quick web search turns up nothing with exactly the same lid shape. Many farm/tractor/machinist boxes that are similar but not exact.
So…….the mystery continues.

Alos known as the "Wikipeadia ****" as in when you look something up; get sidetracked to another link, then another, and another....
and wonder a significant time later "how in H&$% did I get here?"

Does anyone know if these old toolboxes have lead paint on them? I found an old craftsman toolbox from the 50's(I think)and wanted to restore it. But I have no clue if the paint is lead based or not. Some idiot also painted over it with red paint and who knows when it was repainted.

Most likely, but what difference does it make? Don't eat it, and don't let your kids breathe the dust.

I have a message in to the past owner of my old "tractor" tool box and we'll see if he can shed some light on the "mystery".

I picked up these two interesting ones to keep the mystery box company.

the little green one with the leather handle might be missing a tray and the latches are not the best, but it is a nice size. no clue as to the maker??

the brown one is built like a tank and probably could hold a couple hundred pounds. I think these were made by or for the Boeing company maybe by craftsman??

DIF,

The green one might be shop made.

The brown one is definitely manufactured. I've seen those by the dozen's over the years.

That's a good transformation Hemifalcon. I didn't know they made all red emblems. :dunno:

In case anyone would like to purchase the box. FYI

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-LAR...808?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a38210a20

They didn't, the blue + cleaning chemicals don't mix well, I rubbed a hair of blue off on the machinist chest I just sold.

However, that 10-drawer did come out great! what did the matching bottom boxes look it?

They did make all red but they were King Seeley.

Not mine, but I bought this off the cornwell truck and my dad bought it from me. Not bad for $100. The Kennedy had original locks and a Snap on side box also.

....as you guys stated above.. The blue lettering of "CRAFTSMAN" is painted directly over the red.. It wiped off. I used Simple Green and Easy-Off Oven Cleaner to get the box spotless. The Easy Off worked great--but the paint was so delicate that it basically rubbed right off without any effort. I'm not too concerned about it--the thing looked so horrible before. In reality-covering this box with a simple wax would be ideal for it's appearance as far as I'm concerned. Some nice drawer liners--and she'd be perfect..
Like you asked above--I'd like to see what a bottom box looks like with alot of drawers.. I think most were only 2-3 drawer boxes with a large storage area on the bottom.. I'm not certain though..

Here's my new purchase.. It's up for sale--but if I could find a matching box which this would sit on top of--I'll keep it and would love the combo setup!!

I wonder if it would fit on the one I picked up this week. Id also like to find a match to go on top.

That's what I thought. The matching bottom was anything from 3 to 8
drawers. They are not a standard size box.

Finally. I've been watching that for a while. What was the final price they got down to? As for the bottom cover, highly doubtful but possible. Just be glad you got the top one and the set. That is a 70 year old tool box. Congrats and welcome to GJ That is a cool box. Had it been closer I'd own it.

Really right now?? I saw this on craigslist and emailed the guy. Guess this explains why I have not gotten a reply yet :dunno: Hope it went to a good home!
Did you get it for a pretty good deal? I know he had it priced reasonably. That deserves a you **** for sure!

do you have one of the online picture storing sites or you can sign up for a free one at www.photobucket.com. once you set it up just upload your pictures and then copy and paste the link and it will come up full size like some of the posts have that i'm guessing you have seen.

you can use the little paperclip above where you are writing in a post to directly attach a thumbnail like I think you did. only thing is the picture you may have copied off of Craigslist was the small version and can't be enlarged by clicking on it.

take a few more pictures because we can't have enough good pictures of these good old boxes and use either method of posting them.

good luck finding your way around our neighborhood and ask for help if you need some. PM (private message) me or just ad a post and hopefully somebody will help you.

You seemed to have no issue posting the 1st attachment picture. Just do the same thing you did then but maybe make the images larger. You can use paint or Gimp to resize depending on your OS choice :dunno:

How much did you have it listed for?

found a few more of the "Mystery" tool boxes. these were for sale on Etsy. haven't found any on Ebay or at all for that matter and have been looking at old tractor ads too.

any ideas as to the origins of these great little tool boxes or who made them? I also found one that is similar with a cooler handle so maybe modified?

I made a call to the 93 year old's grandson that I bought my box from and grand dad can't remember, but grandson says some days better than others so crossing my fingers and maybe grandson will remember tractor brand or where tool box came from.

Zkling any ideas??

Been a few days since I have posted anything but I had to share this one! I seen it on CL and noticed the handles match one of my top boxes. She was asking for 300 and I offered her 200, now its mine.... Its more than I would normally pay and planned on dickering when I got there to get it but its just in too good of shape. the blue paint and Yamaha stickers will be gone today.
