OH, NO!! It's The Page Of The Beast!

Someone needs to post a photo of a trio of 6 inchers.
I'd do it myself, but my biggest is only 3 1/2" (except my woodworking vise, a ten incher ,but I know it doesn't count with most of you)

Horrible, horrible, horrible basket case!!!

The dynamic jaw insert has been replaced with a piece of bolted in steel?
Looks like the swivel jaw on the static side also got some bolts / straps to keep it from swiveling.
The handle is sticking out from the collar?
The back of the slide has a big chunk missing.
There is a chisel in the swivel hole?

Maybe it belongs in a Mad Max movie....

...so you're saying it's not worth $75 plus $50 shipping? :D
Honestly, I think he'd have a better chance selling just the leadscrew retainer! At least shipping wouldn't kill the deal.

I did the best I could with what I had to work with. Taking into account slide wear and where the jaws wanted to go when closed I had to file some and add a spacer behind the left side of the static jaw to make them align. I think it is a combination of heat warpage, wear, and original machining that added up to the alignment problems. I had to file the bottom of two holes in the jaws to get the screws to go in easy. Last thing to cure a bad tilt to the right on the dynamic jaw was to drill a hole in the pad on the housing and grind down a screw head to about a 1/16" thick to raise the slide up square.
The side view is ugly but the jaws align very good now.

And who pays shipping for that 600S ???

Tempting, very temping...

Let me break one down put it in two or three boxes and see how much it would be.
For the "right" 2C, I'd pay to ship the 600S, assuming you'd pay to ship the 2C...
By "right" one, I mean...
I am looking for one with a swivel base, replaceable jaws and the "flat" knob on the front...
Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks Jason!
Take care!

Mine doesn't have replaceable jaws. :( You might be able to talk J_HAV into separating with his though, not sure if his are replaceable. His is in much better shape than mine too...

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you though.

Jason: There's a guy in Houston getting rid of his Wilton 600S on CL.

Btw, did you get all of your vises in Houston?

Yeah, I saw a guy that was wanting to trade only for a 600S, I think it was actually a friend of J_HAV's.

No, I've only gotten a couple in Houston. I got a couple more that were in-state but not local. The rest came from all over the US.

We are all looking for a craftsman 5198 so we don't get any more devils on the thread.

Thanks for the search...

I'm beginning to think the 5198 is a figment of some mad vise collector's fevered imagination...

If I keep posting, maybe I'll fill up the page...:lol_hitti

Oh look...I did!!!

Did someone say Craftsman carried a vise with that model # and that large, I have not seen one yet. Oldie I hope one shows up some day. I am on vacation in Tucson to watch the drag races and will check the vise stock here.

I've been getting irritated with the lack of CL vise action in my new area. The shops that have them all know what they're worth. Plus, not having any of my tools or my own shop yet, I've lost the fever... for now. =P

I still check CL multiple times a day and all that, but meh. I can't wait for garage sale season around here though, there are tons of old farms and stuff around here. I expect to find some goodies, vises and otherwise.

Pffffttt... You would think a town as big as HOUSTON would see tons of listings of everything... I rarely see new vises listed, and even more rare is a quality vise, and even more rare is a quality vise at a reasonable price... You would think with over 4 million people one would have a mile long list to pick from... :dunno:

Even in the Seattle area, there is something new a few times a week. Sense being here in the Spokane area, I haven't seen a single quality old US vise on CL.

There's still that honey hole at near retail prices though... Might see about a bundle offer, but who knows.

Filson: you are so darn close to Canada you are going to have to check their version of Craigslist until you can start checking to see what's in all those barns. I think you need to make a trip to the antique store just to see a few vises even if you don't pull the trigger and buy one. Then swing back by the Dam and find the 209.

Jason: surprising with all those oil companies and huge rigs not far from you that you haven't had better luck. maybe they all put there vises on Ebay or just pass them on to the grandkids. those Reeds you just got with those huge stands was a nice find though.

Here's one just north of Boston. I think it's a little high, but not outragious. If it wasn't missing the swivel base, I'd make a try for it.

Jake: they don't come that clean everyday for under $100 especially if you don't have to ship it. they always look bigger in the pictures to me. is that a 4 inch or is it bigger?

good luck

I can't tell, the ad doesn't say and the model number must be on the other side.

I already have a 204 1/2 in similar condition that is missing the base. I don't need another with the same problem. Oddly enough, I got mine at a welding shop as well. Now, if it was $25 that would be a different matter. But it would already be gone at that price.

I just posted it because it seemed like some people here were going through withdrawal and I thought someone closer to it might like the chance to make a try at it.

Besides, it's a **** picture. I didn't want to be the only one drooling in front of a monitor tonight. :lol_hitti

I think you need to make a trip to the antique store just to see a few vises even if you don't pull the trigger and buy one. Then swing back by the Dam and find the 209.

There is 8 vises, an old craftsman bench grinder on a pedestal, a solid steel table with shelves in the front, and a neck-high "back board" (it's all metal) that has some peg hooks for spindles and such. Table top is roughly 3-3.5'x5'.

The Rock Island 577 (listed price $350)
"Craftsman" 506-51840 (listed at $200 or $150, don't remember exactly)
A no 181 Prentiss ($150)
Rock Island no 73 ($125 or $150)
The cheaper style Wilton ($125 on that)
A 4 to 4 1/2" Athol on a metal stand ($200)
A 6"+ Post Vise that is oddly cemented onto a base (no price listed)
A sharp-nosed Craftsman that's in great shape and mounted on table ($95)

Craftsman Stand up Grinder was $100 (seen a black and gold restoration on the forum by one of you guys, don't remember who it was though)

And the solid steel (probably ~350-400lbs) was listed at $200.

I'm thinking about a big package deal. See if they're willing to move much on it or not.

Friction: great eye for that anvil. I looked again at the width of the table and that might only be a 3 inch Reed. still pretty clean little vise. or it's a 6 inch read in front of a 1000 pound anvil.:dunno:

Filson: how are your withdrawals doing now. a little conversation about some big old US steel and you are back on board. you know what they say. buying a vise a day keeps the stress away. just go take a drive and take a looksee even if you don't buy anything again you'll get a better feel about the owner.

Looks like there's a gigantic anvil sitting next to it. Or that vise is pretty small. Nothing to reference near it. Hmm.

Well, if the legs on the cutting table are 1 1/2'dia, then the jaws look to be at least 3 1/2" to 4". If they are 2"dia then it would be a 4" to 4 1/2" vise.

The slats on the table are the same as the diameter of the legs.

I bought this Morgan #88 vise today. I know it needs some loving and I hate not posting something pristine like most have done, but we haven't had a vise post today that I know of other than ones that are owned by a non member.
