I am looking for a small wood burning stove or heater for my garage. My garage is 28X36 with 10 ft walls. It seems that everything I find are either "pretty" (expensive) for your dining room or something. Or they are some HUGE homemade barrels for a shop. Doesn't anybody make a smaller simple wood stove for a shop?

Craigslist? The one in my shop was built for manufactured home, thus it is a little smaller than most.
You might also consider a pellet stove...I see them cheap around here often.

I was planning on hanging a "Hot dog" style heater from the ceiling, but now with the price of PROPANE
I have changed my plans. I live in a very wooded area and there are plenty of fallen trees, so wood wouldn't be an issue. I just don't want something that takes up 1/3 of my garage floor either. Maybe I could hang a wood stove from my ceiling? Dumb idea?

How strong are your ceiling joists/trusses ?
Check the specs on clearance from combustible surfaces.
Don't forget, you need to load it and clean it out.

Not all drums are 55gallon. You can get smaller drums. And you don't need kits to make stoves out of them. Stove pipe can be stuck straight into the drum and a couple simple "L" brackets or bent sheet metal with sheet metal screws will hold it in place. A door can be made with a drum lid or any scrap metal. A couple of "L" brackets sheet metal screwed to the side will let you set it on cinder blocks.

Ive used that harbor freight iron stove for years. Ive had it so hot in a 24x24 garage that I had to open the service door in 5 degree weather to cool it down because we were sweating in tshirts.
Biggest thing is to make an exhaust heat exchanger (the top barrel of a barrel stove) to reclaim at least some of the heat thats lost which is a ton. we could easily burn a face cord a month with being out there for a couple hours every night.

At the shop at the golf course we have one like Zeke has pictured, probally around $250 now but it keeps the shop comfortable 24 X 40 X 8 metal bldg with insulation not real tight. I have been thinking about a Pellet stove, a whole lot less work, just dump in a bag of pettets and go play with your projects.

A Nashua wood stove would be good in your situation - it is small and has a blower motor built into it with ports on both sides of the unit - and the blower works REALLY well. It would heat up a shop pretty quickly. You can find them used on CL or probably e-bay.

I picked up a small one from Ebay for my garage, just needs a new grille for the inside knocking up. The flue however has cost me a fair bit more than the stove even used.

A word of caution. Check with your insurance agent, most companies frown on wood burning stoves in a garage.
