Good morning, Have a set (4) of jack stands from Tractor Supply. They seem very sturdy, have four legs
and are painted Gray and Red. Has any one bought these or had any trouble with them? The HAMB site
covered Jack stands and some are prone to failure. Thanks so much for your time.

You didn't say what tonnage they are rated for. Chances are that any stands TS sells will be imorted from China. Basically the same models that HF or Northern Tool sell. That said, I have a set of the HF 3 ton, 6 ton and 12 ton stands and have always been very satisfied with their performance. They are made of a sturdy steel frame and a heavy cast iron lifting post.

The only caution I have is in regard to really cheap import stands. These tend to use stamped steel and spot welded frames, along with thin steel tube lifting posts. I doubt TS sells those models, but if by chance you have a set of these, then return them and get a more sturdy set.

Post a link up about the discussion on the failures. I have a set that was bought from the traveling tool truck. 6 ton stands but very leery of them. I think mine are similiar to the TSC stands.

Even those that look solid can fail, the reason is casting. Most people think of it as a very simple process. To be repeatable and get the expected results consistently there are many variables that must be controlled. It takes effort to do good castings.

I had a friend that had a pickup fall on him while being supported by very heavy looking jackstands. The casting on one was brittle, the other had an air bubble in a critical place. They broke with a load less than rated. To look at them before you could not see a flaw in them and would have laughed off as unreasonable fear that they would break.

Needless to say with lightning hitting twice, he does not ever go to any casino's, he feels he will not have any luck. The biggest luck is he is still alive, someone was there when the accident happened and he was 1 foot far enough away from them that instant death did not happen from a full body crush.
