I finally heard back from the guy with the Colmbian and the C Parker above. I think I'll buy both and keep the Columbian. I'm leaning toward the Simplex too as it's bigger and then I'll have one for the garage and on for the basement shop.

autopts, " much under rated Columbian " funny I was just trying to remember were I had heard that before. I have been working on a Columbian made Craftsman and it is very nice. Not many flaws in the casting, slide is tight, bushing in the swivel base, descent size lock handle on the swivel base, Heavy for its size.

Filson, did you ever go back and get that 577?---I'm like drivesitfar, I have two 577s and I'd buy another in a second if the price was right and the condition was right. I gave $325.00 for a Birtman that was almost unused.





And $245.00 for Whirlpool/NOS.





I would have went to $350.00 on the Birtman. They are great vises, solid, (heavy, 156lbs.), a very neat design about them. And to buy a comparative new vise, same weight, same quality, USA. made, will run you about 12 to 15 hundred, and you wouldn't have an old, not made anymore, not going to be made anymore, quality tool.
But I'm not a flipper so I could see paying a little more than someone who needs a profit margin. You have to be the judge of your circumstances. You won't go wrong with a 577 if it's a good one, even at $350.00. If your going to flip it, I'd reconsider. There's one that's been on E-bay for nearly a year for $500.00. That's going to be a hard sell.
But all this is just my opinion. Good hunting.

Picked this one up from CL last week. It's a 4" Sawyer which is a pretty close match to the 4 1/2" Oswego I already had that used to be my grandfathers.

I plan on doing some kind of restoration on this one, and started a new thread for it.

No, I haven't picked it up yet. I'm still on the fence about it. Would I like to have it? Of course. But when I already have a bunch of vises, it makes it hard to justify buying a vise at about full retail, that I don't technically "need" when we have other things the money can be put towards (like moving into the new house in the next 2 weeks).

Having said that.. I'm more tempted to make a group offer on a number of the vises (including the 577) and a few other things she has, and hopefully could maybe get a better deal. I don't have any interest in flipping the 577. If it ends up in my shop, it's likely staying there lol. From what I could see of the condition of it (without tearing it apart) it looks nearly mint. Faces look great, slide is great, zero repairs, and very minimal wear/hammer marks/etc around the jaws.

If I came across another 8"+ I'd be all over it, price be damned (within reason). But they're hard to find...

::sighs:: I'd love to grow into one of those old guys you meet in life that have a whole treasure trove of goodies out in the shop, but it's hard to balance that desire out with the wife.

by the way I actually own 3 577's because I can't seem to find any other 200 pound vises that are not totally beat up over here. thinking of selling one though so you might be correct saying I own 2 and yes they are an awesome vise. I have one prior to the Electric Company and two with the badges. also 2 of them were bought from then son and son in laws of the original owners.

now I know I've asked this before and you don't have to make good on this request if too hard to do, but can you get all your over 150 pound vises and larger ones in one picture? or would you need a helicopter?

B100 thanks for that awesome picture of the Reed 109 and sorry you missed it. I think the dark side came out of young Jason, and just after he posted the cute little picture of the prairie dogs. I know that if a 209 or 109 gets listed up in my neck of the woods Jason or Filson or maybe Wrench and VA might catch a plane to come get it before I can. it would be like the old Mad Mad Mad world movie going after that one.

keep posting the pictures guys and those awesome vises. oh by the way I didn't know you could buy a decent Parker vise for $35. nice find.

Oldie i'm checking everywhere for the 5198 or even another 5197 like Wrench found. or at least a colored picture of one I can't buy that is sitting on somebody's bench.

The Wilton No. 6 is first generation and by far doesn't equal any Wilton since 1965 at the earliest. I would buy that vise for 1/2 that at most. Now, that 400S is nice! Newer, swivel, and lightly used. Still, most people don't have a loose $450 in their pocket. If he needs the money he will update his listings faster. That's when you come in at $275 and make it interesting. I bought a unused Yost 36C that the seller had on forever ay $495. I snagged it for $150. One never knows.

I feel that the "ever elusive" 5198 will be discovered sitting on some ancient fellow's workbench...

And will only come to light, at his estate sale...

I also feel that it will be in real good condition, because he takes real good care of his tools, and doesn't abuse them...

Drivsitfar. Right now your asking the impossible of a bad back, and don't have a helo. Hope to have a bigger facility to house the iron. When I make the transition, probably with a hog hanger, I'm going to round them up for some 3D pics that I can't get to now.

Oldie: the Craftsman tool hoarders are in Florida and Arizona so keep your eyes peeled for those estate sales. it will be pristine because I have yet to see one of those style smaller ones even needing a new pair of jaws

Espy: nice restore of that old Sears vise. only thing I would tell you is the open screw vises will have the grease dry out and need to be reapplied more often so keep it greased and you'll have that working great for many years to come. also if you are cutting wood, plastic and steel with it in the vise you might want to throw a rag over the screw to keep the shavings from getting on your screw and into your vise so you won't have to take it apart and clean it as often.

Well, I met up with the guy that had the Morgan and the Simplex. The Morgan's jaws measured 4 3/8" and was beefier and in better shape. So I bought it. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep you up to date on the Columbian and the C Parker I'm supposed to get pics of today.

Epsy: that Sears vise came out great. I believe your vise was manufactures by Columbian. What did you do to make the lead screw black? Paint or oxide?

Drivesitfar: I use silacon grease on my open screw woodworking lead screw. It doesn't attract particles like bearing grease so clean ups aren't as frequent. I've toyed with the idea of attaching a bellows tube on the screw.

Hard to see in the pic, but for $30 I'd probably grab it especially if you need one. A hole is probably due to a void in the casting and is better than a crack IMO.

What model no. is it? Looks like a 973, but it's hard to tell.

It looks like front jaw is being held in by screws instead of factory pins. Price seems ok, depending on the extent of the damage.
