found a few more of the "Mystery" tool boxes. these were for sale on Etsy. haven't found any on Ebay or at all for that matter and have been looking at old tractor ads too.

any ideas as to the origins of these great little tool boxes or who made them? I also found one that is similar with a cooler handle so maybe modified?

I made a call to the 93 year old's grandson that I bought my box from and grand dad can't remember, but grandson says some days better than others so crossing my fingers and maybe grandson will remember tractor brand or where tool box came from.

Zkling any ideas??

DIF, the last one may be an orphan. The handle and latch are different, and its missing the two skid ******** the bottom.

Agreed. still waiting for my 93 year old to remember where he got the one I have or the tractor brand. was nice to see there are a few others and not really too spendy unless you have to ship one.

mine is collecting the old tools i'm finding until I have sort of a complete set up to shine up and have it on a bench to work out of. it's just a little to big to fit under my seat when the seats are down in my little SUV so found a little metal Craftsman sort of like Caddy's he just posted to replace the plastic Craftsman one I have used for years.

keep thinking because that's what you are good at and I hope you find a few sales today and tomorrow and some more gems to share with us. I'm on my out the door to another 80 year old client's garage and we'll see what I find.

It's not vintage but it is about 30 years old, It was Free from my Snap-On dealer. I let it sit in back of my boat too long.

Been a few days since I have posted anything but I had to share this one! I seen it on CL and noticed the handles match one of my top boxes. She was asking for 300 and I offered her 200, now its mine.... Its more than I would normally pay and planned on dickering when I got there to get it but its just in too good of shape. the blue paint and Yamaha stickers will be gone today.
I've seen people weld up frames for those to sit on with regular castors underneath.

Here's my new find. A 60's(ish) Hout 3-drawer bottom box. (Ignore the Kennedy) Currently it's painted yellow, possibly powder coat. I'm hoping I can carefully strip it and save the original blue hammer finish. I paid $115 for the pair.

Oddly, I've been looking for 40's-50's Craftsman boxes to line up under a bench, but these Huot's keep popping up instead. While Cman's don't seem to be showing up near me at all. :dunno:

A heat gun can bring the color back on the plastics. I use a heat gun on faded jet ski plastics. Also, try Mother's Back to Black.

454, that craftsman box would make a great project for the price. It's only about 25mi from you, at the price it wouldn't break the bank on gas to grab it. Too far for me though.

The waterloo is in great shape, but too rich for my blood.

So you negotiated a price with her, and went to see it with the plan to undercut that price?! Not cool. Not cool at all.

Lol, just to clarify when I offered 200 it was if it was as in as good of condition as she said it was, and it was so I gave her 200.
I have always been straight with all I have dealt with, ask anyone here that I have bought from or sold to. If the box would have been rusted out or beat up I would have dickered, I made that clear from the get go.

I tore it completely down, took out all the slides, unbolted every nut , inspected every inch for rust or dents. Thankfully the red Kennedy paint was all in tact on the inside and I only found one dent on the entire box set.
I pounded out the dent, buffed out all the exterior paint on both boxes and frame, primed it , painted it and reassembled it.
I always loved older boxes due to how sturdy they are, but I have to say this Kennedy frame is beefy! The wheels can all be moved to wherever you choose, I put the big wheels on the back and the little ones on front just to find it turns so much easier with the big ones in the center.
Thanks for the compliment, I am very happy with it. Tomorrow I will complete it with a 1 inch stainless handle.

Are you going to paint the wheels? If they are hard rubber tires on them I've read that you can bead blast the whole thing on low pressure and it will prep the wheels for paint and restore the look of the rubber.

Yes sir, good eye Steve. I have a buddy that said he would do them next weekend. That's why the rims haven't been done yet either.

I use a duplicolor etching primer when using a rattle can and bare metal rustoleum primer when using my paint gun.

Do i need to use etching even though its been sandblasted? Is the sandblasted surface enough to use rustoleum pro primer?

Otot: once you get to bare metal if you buy an upper grade rustoleum in a rattlecan that has a rust inhibitive in it and they are about $10 per can instead of the lower end versions that are about $5.

that said is your garage or paint area heated? if it's over 50 and preferably 60 degrees to 80 degrees that is ideal for the spray can methods.

I would hit the item with a heat gun to make sure none of this damp air is on your box after it left the sandblast area and even put in the oven for a few minutes on a low setting if you can make that fly with your bride. some guys actually have an old oven in there shop garage.

if the heat drops below 50 at night or down a lot lower you might want to bring inside or have a heat lamp or some heat source for it to cure. I think that about covers what I do to keep the paint on a nice piece of old US steel.
good luck

Well, you made me look: Mine does not have those hooks. It looks like the hooks on yours would make whatever was on them hit the lid brace as well? :dunno:

I took a closer look today and I think someone brazed the hooks on mine.

found a few more of the "Mystery" tool boxes. these were for sale on Etsy. haven't found any on Ebay or at all for that matter and have been looking at old tractor ads too.

Nice find on Etsy. I'm gonna check them out. I happened across one on eBay today. I think the seller is pretty optimistic with a $130 starting bid. I'll let one of you guys bid it since I already have one. :)

Boiler nice hearing from you and any luck tracing down the original maker yet? just an FYI the ones on Etsy are only $50 range if I remember correctly and would consider buying another if shipping wasn't on top for me. it is a cool box.

that said it didn't quite fit under the seat of my little SUV so I picked up this little Craftsman and loaded it up. it has a tray and sorry didn't get a picture before filling it to the brim.

I also picked up this bigger Craftsman that is built like a tank that I'm going to put my Milwaulkee 7 inch hand grinder in because it came without a case.

This is in the classifieds. No longer have the time for it. And id rather it go to a good home rather than rust in my garage. Had it sandblasted on March 3rd.

i was just going to post this link to a $50 Craftsman bottom box because i can't use another project tool box today and a little too far for me to drive and pick it up. then i get to this thread to post a link to the ad for somebody else to grab it and see it is Otot's.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/tls/4359040796.html

good luck and would make somebody a nice starter box or maybe even just good storage.

Otot: you know it's worth what somebody would pay for it. I think you had it listed for $75 for a week or sow and probably without an offer? is it missing the wheels or do you have them and just not on it the picture? also the front cover can you put it back on and take a picture with it on?

at the $50 price you have it on now you might get someone to grab it locally and finish your project. or finish it and ask what you have into it if you don't want to take a loss and wait for a buyer. it looks like a nice solid little box and might get $150 finished, but i just sold a 10 year old like new red Craftsman 3 tier for $140 because nobody would buy it the first week for $175 and it had all the locks and keys. pristine after you finish that box then you are talking about the guys that love old Craftsman boxes more than the newer cheaper stuff and maybe not as handy or have any time to do what you are able to do. you might get quite a bit more than you have into it if you are willing to wait because they don't come up every day like the newer ones do.

i was trying to help you by posting your price here, but this isn't the classifieds or we would all have something to post here. i'm guessing you already posted on the classifieds of GJ?

good luck

the wheels as well as everything else had to come off to get blasted. The wheels are trash anyway. It is in the classifieds.
