I was looking in my fuzzy 45 catalog, I was wrong, even the picture wasn't the same, you wouldn't have any images of the 60,66 or 68 catalog pic's you could share would you Outlaw? If so thanks in advance.

Here's a copy of page 21 from the 1960 catalog. hope it helps.

My new "friend", B100, found this on Ebay, and sent me a "heads-up"...:thumbup:

We have a conundrum...:headscrat:headscrat:headscrat

The fixed base 519X series, is a 4" vise with the model #5191...

The listing says it's a 3 1/2" vise...:wtf::wtf::wtf:

HMMM???

It's not the "ever elusive" 5198, but it's close...:drool::drool::drool:

Thanks for the alert, B100...:bow::bow::bow:

Ya Dun Gud, Bubba!!!:beer::beer:

P.S...You will notice that I didn't give you the link...:evil::evil::evil:

Ha!!!...Ha!!! again...:lol::lol::lol:

I've seen it on eBay:evil:. There was another on on CL last month but the sellers were hard to reach and by the time they replied, somebody local to them was already coming to buy it from them.

I was keeping an eye out for you, Oldldh. The only problem with the one I found was the base was missing. And that is a big part of those vises. I'll find you a nice one sooner or later. :beer:

I bet that when some of the older members on garage journal start checking out, their vise hoards will be spilling onto the open market and we will see who has the 209's and 5198's

I'm taking mine with me. Big box--big hole--plenty deep. Aliens will eventually dig'em up, take them to Crab Nebula, put them on Space-bay.

Thanks jakemac for the article and wow Outlaw, nice collection, I am impressed. I have some reading to catch up on. I have many vises but no Craftsman's except the cheaper models. maybe some day I will get lucky again. I do carry jaws for the 5160, a request from a GJ member. Maybe some day I could build a set for the 5198, that would be my wish.

Actually, I did all that work to SAVE time I can't tel you how many times I was digging into the catalogs to look up when a vise was made, before I got "lazy" :lol:

And If I find one of those "hiding" you will probably be the first to know...

Maybe... :evil::lol_hitti

I got these off CL. Reed #203R is in very nice shape minus the paint. The Prker is a #103 and it has a few issues. First the jaw face, someone drilled holes where the pins go so as to use small bolts, the mounting area of the jaw is chipped, The jaw face has had the lower lip removed. I paid $30 for the Parker And $20 for the Reed. Also got a floor jack for free.

You guys and your $20 vises make me nuts. I have been looking for a few months (just starting to get my shop setup), I know that isn't long compared to the guys that spend decades in search of the elusive Reed 109/209's but still. The best deal I have found is $100. Still not bad for a good quality tool like these but I want a $20 6" Holland as much as the next guy. Everybody *****. :eyecrazy::willy_nil:evil:

Seriously thanks for sharing.

Bought this one for 35 euros ($48). A corner of one of the replaceble jaws snapped of and there is a little crack at the back of the static jaw (near the slide), but I think that won't be a huge problem as there will be no big pressure at that spot when using the vise (at least that's what I hope :D)
I'm really happy with my first USA made vise because I really wanted one and I have NEVER seen one for sale before. It also has a swivel base which is nice too :). It weights about 60 lbs and the jaw size is 11.2 mm (4.40 inch). As soon as I saw this one for sale I jumped on it haha :D!
Let me hear how you think I did :)

In the last two pictures you can see the small crack.

Can anyone tell me how old this vise is? I know the brand was around between 1914 and 1960.

Looks like a nice US Made vise! How wide are the jaws? I'd bet you can clean it up, fix the chipped part, replace the broken jaw, lube it and you'd have one very nice vise!

4.4" sounds like a good size vise for most people (well, not a lot of the people on this thread), but that would work great in my garage. :) Nice find.

Hako: nice find and should fit nicely on the bench you just found. if i remember correctly the American Scale company was making vises up until the 50's and then had some labor issues or something like that and quit making vises.

yours looks like one of the older ones I've seen and I've seen a few. the casting they had on the later vises was not in a circle pattern and some didn't even have a name on them.

jaw doesn't look too bad and the rest looks like in great shape. clean and grease and use or do a full restore if you have the time and want to.

sweet price too

Zoomie: I need several of that style too so if anybody PM's you please post or PM me to. thanks

Does anyone know of a better source for these screws?

I just cant see paying $18.25 for 4 of them...

http://www.viseparts.com/category_s/81.htm

Thanks in advance!

Take care!
ZOOM

I just talked to a rep at a hardware supply house for this very problem. I've got a Rock Island with some torn up hardware so they need to be replaced. Since the minimum order is 75.00, i should have a few thousand pieces if they come through with what i want.:D

I'll start turning them down on the lathe as soon as i get them so if anybody is still interested then, ill post my results when i get a call back with good news.

I searched high and low a long time ago for some screws that were not the common bevel. Today's screws are all 82, 90, or 100 degree... Sure there are web sites that talk about other angles but they simply don't exist anymore.

Either you have to modify an existing screw or make your own from scratch... :(

Oldie, I only got two sisters but I would be happy to adopt you as my brother.

I gave up looking too, actually I did not look very hard, I do not like flat head screws, I would never put them in for jaws, for one thing they position the jaws so no side way adjustment then they get all buggered up since they are so close to the jaw face. Then they are hard to remove, especially the Phillip's head. So I like to use the short head cap screws for the C style and L style jaws, and for the thicker jaws the regular head cap screws, remember they are a grade 8 hardness. I like to sink the head around 3/64 deeper so the screw head is kind of protected, yes you loose some jaw face but I believe worth it. I would be happy to counter bore any ones jaws for the short head screws, if you ship them to me.

Kevin,
thanks for the generous offer and i may take you up on that when I'm ready for them. also really appreciate your knowledge and reasoning why you would change the original design for the better.

BC: let us know if you get the thousands you are talking about and do you need to customize them some in case original replacements is the plan?

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

i found another vise not on www.dayid.org and would post there after i spiff it up if i could figure out how. Holland's 15 has 5 inch jaws and i'm guessing weighs in the 80 pound range and as soon as i get a scale in my shop i'll actually weigh these good old vises.

Those were the prices I saw on that page as well. Zoomie, where did the $18.25 for only 4 come from ?

Chief L4. This vise belonged to my grandfather. It was in pretty bad shape. Missing one jaw, base bolt and covered with house paint. I ordered some 4" replacement jaws from wiltonviseparts.net and they fit pretty well. I need to adjust the screw into the handle. Painted it verde green.
