What should I do* about getting screwed by Sears?

Alright, it's two towns away, and I swung by last night to warranty some stuff, and bought another set of US made prybars. ($20) Anyhow, I grabbed some warranties and the guy cooly helped me grab stuff and exchanged it. I said I wanted to look around so he put the new items and the old ones they didn't have into a bag on the front counter as his shift ended.

So I shop around, get the prybars, pay, and grab my bag of stuff, and split. Had to get to a party.

So I get home, unbag it, and put stuff on my box. Then I realize a Torx they didn't have, a set of needle files, and a American set of Allen bit drivers...all missing. What shall I do? Give then a call?

Yes, hopefully the employee is honest and stashed it and notified a manager.

Re: What should I about getting screwed by Sears?

I would start a sears bashing thread

 Absolutely, it's the most productive thing to do on this forum.

Call the store, Sears should have a surveillance system near the register and doors, video will help to uphold your story.

Good luck

Don't ask.
Re: What should I about getting screwed by Sears?

First place to start is to ask the store.

BTW, I don't see where it is their fault that you didn't keep track of your stuff? Seriously the common routine at most stores is to pay for your stuff, and take it with you when you leave.

If its close just go back. I have bad luck on the phone. People are more apt to help when you are standing there. On the phone they don't seem so responsive, especially kids.

Go to the store and explain what happened. I am not understanding the point of this thread. Has this happened to you before at Sears and you didn't get your tools back? Why the negative expectations?

As stated, they really didn't screw you. You screwed yourself. Just go back and talk to manager.

The employee tossed them into their return bin, you know, where all the old returned tools go, but didn't ring up/give me replacements.

It makes for a better story to blame someone else.

It's someone else's fault in this case.

As stated, they really didn't screw you. You screwed yourself. Just go back and talk to manager.

Unfortunately it's like 30+ miles away. And actually, they did. You don't just move stuff and through the stuff not getting returned in back/in the return bin.

Just be civil but persistent. These things happen and stores need to give their customers the benefit of the doubt. I don't think it's really anyone's fault. The question now is just how big of a hassle it'll be for you to correct it.

Just like when you get food to go from a restaurant , you need to check your order. How many times were you short a burger, fries
Or ketchup when you finally opened the bag at home.

Learn once and you will always check the bag. The purchases should have been rung up and then the returns next or whatever order.

Hopefully not much of one, Sears is usually pretty cool.
Despite the fact they won't give or sell rebuild kits.

I'm thinking a trip to Harbor Freight to replace your lost items.

You screwed up and it's their fault?? Call the store and ask about it, if they can't help you think of it as a lesson learned and be happy it was a relatively cheap screw up.

Just have a civil word with them. Could be a simple oversight, numpty moment, new employee not used to the ropes etc. Everyone has off days occasionally.

He seemed to be having a bad day. Nice enough guy.

:eyecrazy: This thread should be renamed:

Alright bubba, how is this my fault?

I did what? I said I'd grab the stuff I wasn't returning off the counter after I looked around to buy, he said he threw it in the bag with the returns, it wasn't in the bag.

I hope that you finally resolve this to your satisfaction. The lesson I would take from this is to check your bag before leaving the store. Yes, the store should have put everything in the bag but, since mistakes happen, you double check. It's sort of like fast food restaurants. Nearly everyone has had the experience of discovering a mistake in their order after getting home. So you learn to check your bag for a correct order before leaving the store. The same applies to any store.

Not on topic, but go to another store. Mine will give out kits for $.01!

Dude, I've given up on that. Spring hill mall, cherry vale mall (Rockford) and crystal lake, none give 'em out. Maybe because I'm close to sears holdings HQ?

You'd think I'd learn that after having what you mentioned happening.

What are the chances that a new member joins GJ and their first thread is HELP ME IDENTIFY A BAG OF TOOLS I FOUND at this KICKIN' PARTY THE OTHER NIGHT!

Ha, it was at Chuck E Cheeses for my cousins 4th so I kinda doubt it.

1. You left personal belongings to a stranger.
2. You trusted someone who worked at sears. Someone who's shift was ending none the less.
3. You didn't check your bag before you left.

I had all good intentions of going back to that same counter. I didn't know his shift was ending.

And typically when another cashier hands you a bag smiling (at sears even) you don't typically question him/her

Typically yes. But YOU walked away from YOUR stuff. YOU should have checked YOUR bag. Point blank. This isn't a typical situation. Typically, people don't walk away from stuff that belongs to them.

So you lock your box everytime you go to the bathroom or to the other corner of the shop?

You lock your car at the pump?

I swear I saw a tumbleweed blow through the tool section, and I can't easily just carry a stack of returns including a 15" adj wrench.

It's not the act of walking away, it's the blaming of someone else for a dumb mistake made by you that many on here are calling you out for.
Saying Sears "ripped you off" is pretty bold considering the circumstances.

I should have said mistake, yes

But said employee tossing items he didn't ring up a return for would be on Sears. Unless he picked the returns out from between them and left them on a counter. Doubtful.

Actually yes I do. I lock my vehicle every time I get out of it.

My box stays in the garage. If I'm working on something and have to make a part run, and there's no on in the garage to watch stuff, my box gets locked, as does the garage. I don't trust society these days. Especially after my woman's friend who owned a store had her 2013 denali stolen in broad day light, right in from of the store. Yes, it was locked. But the guys were pros obviously because they disabled the locks, alarm system and had it in gear in about 15 seconds flat. Now were getting off subject on whether or not its really worth it to lock something. But its piece of mind in a way, and will deter most criminals.

As for a bunch of carrying a bunch of tools, you know they make some kind of contraption that resembles a large wicker basket, and has wheels on it. I hear they're really catching on, and every whee has them, including sears.

ANYWAYS, point is YOU didn't check the bag. Every other reason why or why not is irrelevant.

That's not the point were making. Your making the point Sears screwed you. Were trying to get you to realize you screwed yourself. Yes, sears will make it right with you. But that doesn't seem to be the topic being discussed right now.
