6" Sterns c-clamp (w/ broken ear on thumbscrew and missing pad)

So I periodically see clamps without pads like your examples and leave them be. I'm more of a woodworker and not having a pad would be more trouble than it's worth.

Are replacement pads available?

Cheers

Jim

Outlaw are you going to use the tiny bucket boss to organize your tiny tools for those tiny on site tasks? How big was the brass hammer?

I was able to find 3 sales today ! It was nice to finally get out of the house.

Congrats Jake, ain't it great when something finally comes together? Now wait for someone to post a "WTB mount for black smith vise, was at a garage sale and some a hole took the mount without the vise" :lol_hitti

Zkling: here are a few more pictures of my Miller's Falls plane and i hope i got the right part and angle.

Cool, yea thanks for the pics. I didn't realize it was that large from the initial pics. Miller's Falls made some real nice stuff. Reminds me of SK and Proto.

Not that I know of.
I'm working in wood more often than metal as well.
Like you, I usually leave them behind but in the melee I didn't see that the pad was missing. I'll now have to keep an eye out for a bent clamp with a good pad to use as a replacement.

The fickle Tool Wheel of Fate just keeps turning and turning ............ :willy_nil

Mcmaster and the like carry replacement pads. Or you can make them pretty easily if you have some basic fab equipment. Most of my larger clamps came without pads, they are much cheaper that way as many consider them broken. Keep thinking that.

Today the wife and I went out for lunch and she suggested afterward to go to one of our antique store haunts. I was all for that because it is one of few that has a lot of tools and other small stuff, like thousands of different bottle openers. The owner is a lady probably in her 90s and she was in the shop today which is unusual. In here absence the employees are not allowed to set a price on any of the unmarked items so they call her on the phone and she'll quote a price. I have looked over their stuff time and time again and usually buy at least one thing each time I go. I have had my eye on a complete Greenlee Knockout Punch No. 375 for a couple of years in her shop but the price wasn't right for me. I believe the No. 375 set is pretty expensive new. This has the 1 1/4", 1", 3/4" and 1/2" punches used for making a hole to accommodate a conduit in an electrical box, but it is very useful for making large clean holes in sheet metal in general. Well today I was going to buy the No. 375 but it didn't have a price tag on it. So I asked, "how much is this thing?" They asked the owner and she said if you can explain to me what the heck it is I'll give it to you for $8 so I told her about attaching conduits to electrical boxes and how the punch works and she like that explanation, I said I would take the No. 375. She asked if I would like to look at some other tools that she didn't have displayed and of course I took her up on that. There was some nice tools including a very large and old tap and die in a beautiful wooden case. It was made in Vermont and sorry I believe the manufacturer name started with a B but it wasn't Vermont American. I was interested in a compartment filled with punches. Most were duplicates so in this real dark corner I tried as best I as I could (should have taken a light and a magnifying glass and maybe I should keep them in the car). Anyway I bought one of each that she wanted $1.50 each for and I got the whole bunches of punches for $20 including a center punch and two leather or fabric punches. The punches were marked Mayhew and I like them better than the Made in China punches I bought at Ace Hardware. Look at the textured surface on the punches, good for a grip. Can anyone comment on the age of the punches or whether they are well regarded tools? Total cost for all was $28. I have included photos of stuff I was able to purchase.

ok Outlaw and all tell me all about this, I went to a yard sale and the only tools they had was a coffee can of these, that was left on the water heater when the last person moved out. I think some one is going to be upset when they can't find that coffee can... But I really don't know what this is, Maybe for a Mill? And how expensive are they?

SNIP

No, the BB is going to share the load with the first one I got. It's over loaded. the Tiny tools for the most part are in my oldest Kennedy 520.

The brass hammer was no more than maybe 1/2 lb total weight.

First stop of my day was advertised as an Estate Sale but turned out to be a picker set up in an old building 15 miles north of the nearest town and on a four corners in farm country. I was hoping that drive was not a waste of time. But it turned out to be a good surprise as this young guy had lots of really cool antiques.
It the tool category I picked up this very simple older sheet metal tool box with original tray. Nothing fancy and no name but only $5. It's currently green wrinkle finish paint but the refurb plan will be to clean up the surface rust, sand smooth and repaint with hammer finish.
Other items found (no pics), an old powder horn, a couple matching but beat up toy police revolver cap guns and a couple cheap Crossman 760 rifles for parts guns.
The second stop of the day was to my local man store consignment shop. I needed some extra pliers around the house so I went specific for those and found a couple extra items. An ACE Hardware drill index with some bits for $2, a Powercraft 8" adjustable wrench $1 and buried in the bottom of their box of wrenches I find the $1 tiny adjustable wrench that surely must go into the cup sized Bucket Boss that Outlaw found.
All in all not too bad. After some clean up pliers will be available in every part of the house and garage.

Not really used in a machine. see the square head on top? a tap handle is used to drive them.

Value would be dependent on condition, and if someone needs one. If kept in a coffee can, condition would be suspect as the cutting edges may be dinged up. Those may be someones collection of cast offs, or they just figured it was better than rolling around in with the wrenches.

rmalkow2, is that 2-1/2" Adjustable really made real? Not pot metal or plastic?

If so, better pics? I've seen(and own) many 4" Adjustable, but anything smaller was always a toy.

It appears to be pot metal (Made in China) but it does actually work and adjusts properly. It could be used for small machine screw nuts etc. Opens up to about 1/2 inch. It will find a home on my key chain.

I hit one sale today but didn't go for the tools. I got what i wanted and ended up bringing these 2 home along with a nice little Dunlap vise that i didn't get around to photographing.

The SK ratchet is in great shape but it needed a cleaning. I've never seen so much grime come out of a ratchet before.

The pipe wrench is a first for me. I don't have any Plomb pipe wrenches and especially not one marked Plomb/Proto Tool Co.

Got a 5 inch taiwan C clamp, made in use pliers, and a broken file for 2 dollars today at the pawn shop. Was thinking of using the file to fabricate a jaw face for my new vise. Already use the clamp to help fabricate a new loading pin for my reverese hyper power rack attachment.

Hit a sale today in a part of town I don't usually try to compete in. I think the man of the house owned an HVAC business. Don't know how much stuff I missed, but I found a few things for $8:

Old chrome Dymo labelmaker in its original box, a Honeywell multimeter for working on industrial burners, and last but not least: a 12" Diamond adjustable wrench. It has "Calk" in the company name, dating it to before 1958.

I hope to hit another small, early-season swap meet tomorrow morning...

Good score all around, the Mayhew punches are top notch.

Please post pics of that grinder in the show off you block grinder thread. Lots pics of the disc sand too please. Is that an original attachment or a homemade job?

I couldn't make it to the auction yesterday so I signed up for online bidding.
I got back from working to find that I had bought a Baldor Grinder for $35. That will be about $43 after tax and fees.

I am quite happy about the price. :D I was also bidding on a Railroad track anvil but it went higher than my bid by just $5 so the grinder was all I won.

No pictures yet as I haven't picked it up yet, but here is the link.

i stopped in at a garage sale and picked up a few things for $10 including the old cigar box i found to put them in. not sure who makes this hammer that i think has a leather grip? what is this tool and how would i use it?

this is one of the nicest oil filter wrenches I've seen in person and says Made in USA on it and brass or copper?

a few wrenches and things in the bottom and i can even use the chalk line in my golf bag since i already own 3 of them.

Looks like an old estwing. Check the plate on the bottom of the handle. It's called a hammer and is typically used for inserting and removing nails. Nails are a type of fastener, commonly used to join pieces of wood. Wood is a type of building material that is produced from trees.

The ides of March:
Three sales over two days - No St. Paddy's Day parade for me and Max. This weekend's haul:

Saturday, sale one, in an old section with many huge houses. The add said a HUGE bench vise, so I was determined to be first in line. The story I heard while awaiting in line was that the husband had died back in the mid 1990's and his stuff has been just sitting in the garage and basement since. This could be very interesting.

My reward was this Reed 405 1/2 vise. :rocker: Bathroom scale has it at 134 lbs, at $100.00 it was less than $0.75 per lb, well below my limit! The downside was that it took way too long to remove the vise and get it up the basement steps. I know I missed out on a good deal of primo stuff. Also scored the Consumer's auto Supply wrench/caliper $1.00. and the set of Starrett No. 50 beam Trammels. The caliper legs for the trammels were no where to be found.

Saturday, sale two, the drill press vise. For $5.00 could not pass it up. It is identical in construction to a mid 1950's Craftsman I have made by Palmgren.

Sunday sale, a waste of fuel and time. Yo never know until you get inside...

As soon as I get some decent weather I am going to start the restoration on the Reed, so more about the Reed in the Vises thread once I get started - the Reed is second in line behind my FPU.

The Reed has the 1908, 1912 and 1914 patents, which would date it to 1915 - 1925. There was lots of sawdust on the base and that is always a good sign for the jaws.

great score on the vise and i bet you did miss a lot of other quality tools there. just curious unless you have about 5 hands can you put sold stickers on items at sales and keep shopping? or is it like a few sales that i have had the "pleasure" of going to that if you set something down the guy (or gal) behind you picks it up and says it is theirs?

i don't know if i would do more than just pull the slide and screw out and just grease that vise that looks like it has never been abused. it looks like 100 year old patina which isn't easy to find. my 2 cents

also how many hours did you have to show up early in the snow to be first in line?

good job

Not sure if DIF was being tongue in cheek or what... But :lol_hitti

Since ZK "stole my line...:

The spring loaded wrench is a pipe wrench, The original patents for the mechanism IIR were with - Heller Brothers and their trade name for the tools was Masterench.

They made them in both Pipe and "adjustable" hex bolt versions, and from at least 8" to at least 14" (I have 2 ea of them in 8 and 10" in the Hex jaw, and 2 ea. in Pipe.) I use one of them in my camp gear specifically for the propane tank connections, but wherever needed as well.

These actually work better than a crescent/adjustable by far, faster and the harder you pull, the tighter it grips. One of the few "one size fits all" tools that actually WORKS. I'll buy them wherever the price is even close to decent.

Nice find! Clean that puppy up see if the teeth are still good (you can resharpen them with a fine triangular file..) and add it to the daily use pipe wrenches!

i went to cook the kids breakfast and come back and saw a little re editing and LOL. you know the only reason i pick up these tools at these sales is so i can try to stump the unstumpable. you guys are way too good and damn funny.

i know i shouldn't take pictures of a box full of stuff and then not itemize it before setting it down at my shop, but i did it again.

now Outlaw i probably wouldn't have even considered this next purchase if you hadn't "made" me want an old blue Craftsman tool box. so here it is full of stuff i have also yet to uncover so i'll itemize some of the stuff during the week when we don't have so many sales going on for your imput.

is this the same rare Craftsman box or did i just buy a relative. under all that stuff is some Proto and other nice quality things, but since i didn't want to dicker and have seller change his mind i paid his asking price and will hope for the best. by the way it came with this cool little yellow cart and thank god because that box was heavy.

cheers and no i didn't even know what an Estwing hammer is, but i might have known what it does. i'm sure by the time i read "Hammer Time" i'll be buying up more hammers too.

I wanted to share the 4' Vulcan chain wrench I found on eBay a couple of weeks ago. A steel at 45 bucks plus shipping ($24). For reference I snapped the pic with the Gearwrench 24" crescent.

Bought a 1/3 HP with what appears to the the same disc sander attachment in late 2012. See post 194 in the "let's see your craftsman block grinders" thread.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2789816#post2789816

Cleaned it up and put it to use for light duty stuff. Have a pedestal mounted 3/4 HP for heavier duty.
