That's great Outlaw!
I'm glad you were able to make it happen. That box couldn't have gone to a better home. I'm looking forward to pictures of it's resurrection.

Thanks guys!

Do you a full 1942 catalog Outlaw?

If you meant do I own the catalog; Not in paper, I have 45 .pdf's of Sears/Craftsman catalogs from 1925 to 1973 with gaps, only a few are Hand tools most are power tools (but often have some things like vises and boxes in them)

OK! It's not often I get to post something during the week!

Some of you may recognize this from a while back in the Vintage box thread! I asked for help in snagging it from a continent away, and I got it! (Thanks Squashfest! ).

It took some time, but was worth the wait! We started this about 5 weeks ago, and he was able to snag the box after some delay on the seller's availability, then packing things like this are always an adventure! Another week crossing the Continent! Cost more than 2X the purchase price for shipping, so close to the highest price I've paid for a box! Cost per drawer, WAY more... ($90 total)

Its a 1942 (or so) Long C marked 2 drawer drop front tool box! (Tag is not a decal; riveted tag) it will (after cleanup) house all my long C Craftsman tools! I've been lusting after one like this for a couple of years, since a guy here on GJ found one, and it cleaned up to near pristine, and then he stuck it up on Eprey for an obscene price.

I'll get more pics up probably this weekend after cleanup!

Til then, the before pics: :pimpflash

nice box! I wonder who made it for them, it's real close to my proto box just looks like different drawer pulls.

Yea, Wow sorry, it was late, brain was slower than normal. Are they the ones from the Rose Antique site? I've been trying to find a mid 40's hand tool catalog. Earliest I can find for just hand tools is the '49 they have.

Those are completely different boxes, build wise. I'd venture to guess your Proto was made by Waterloo. I'm not sure who was making craftsman boxes back in the 40's. Outlaw?

eh.. today smoked pole... 2 promising sales had nothing to speak of, a few items I would have picked up to flip but prices were higher than I would be asking myself so no way I'd pay... I did stop by the pawn shop for my Blue Handle fix, found a really nice condition long needle nose that I don't have any of, a few Craftsman extensions and wrench for $5. Sad day around here from what I was expecting, maybe tomorrow will be better. Lots of sales listed already, hope to find a few more by then and have a nice route planned out.

no pic, just imagine :)

Found this gem of a lock with 2 keys for my "old tractor" tool box that was hidden under this interesting machine in a very cool wood box. Paid $25 and owner said it works when plugged in. might just be one for the shelf after i clean it up and will put the box behind it or next to it because it is just cool.

will get better pictures later cause just left my shop. the Cutawl supposedly cuts all that and more. i must have 50 little replacement blades in the little plastic container. also the original owner's manual which looks as old as the Constitution so sort afraid to move those papers much.

Cork would look awesome in that old C box you have.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Internation...338?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e88729c2a

here is a link of a Cutawl cleaned up that is very close to the one i have in the meantime for you to see if you computer will let you go to that online site.

Outlaw (and others) this is a you tube video i found of what that little Cutawl machine can do that i found yesterday. also the wood box is the actual company that built them so probably original box too.

Jeff: i see old locks now and I think of buying them so you will have some more cool old ones to gaze at. by the way my wife went to our local locksmith because our front door's lock was tough to get a key in and he gave her liquid graphite. we used it and the lock worked great and is starting to stick again. i heard from a few others that graphite isn't the best product. your first choice is what product??

Most locksmiths HATE graphite! It makes a mess and is really a pain when rekeying a lock.
My choice would be any of the following: LPS1, Houdini, or Lock Saver.

Let me know if you want to sell any of the locks as you get them. Always looking for more items to add to my collection.

So I started my yard sailing tonight, nearly 10:00 PM! Spotted this puppy in CL as an item immediately called and the guy said I could come over tonight, as he was setting up for a yard sale tomorrow! :D I did by an import vise, but from across the cold pond... Made in Switzerland :)

An essentially new in box Zyliss, vise. These are like the shopsmith of vises. Can be setup to do lots of different clamping chores, has an extension to make it longer, jaw pads, etc. etc...

This one is from 1986 (the guy I bought it from was 80 years old, and bought it new!)

No visible use, and certainly no abuse!

I think this is still sold under the Gripmaster name, or maybe its just licensed? :dunno:

In any case, I generally see these for sale for anywhere from 80-135

I got this one for...

Wait for it

$5! :rocker:

I think there is at least $5 of aluminum there!

OOHH very nice!!! They even have keys!
Didn't expect you to see that so quick. That's one lock and key, front and back. Sending a PM Jeff.

It took him a whole 28 minutes to chime in. There must be a time lag between Buffalo and Cleveland. :lol_hitti

LOL, I guess the time lag is here. Just reading all this now at 2 AM.

Outlaw: did you take advantage of one of your elders? that is one great vise and actually was the first vise i bought almost 30 years ago from a local Home Show for $150. it was my go to bench vise for years until i got the old US vise bug several years ago. i still have it in a box and no i won't sell it for $5.

it has some pretty cool options that i still haven't used on it that might work well for you on a project where you have an odd shaped item.

I was able to find 3 sales today ! It was nice to finally get out of the house.

The first sale was disappointing though. It turned out to be a garage band's flop house, and smelled like it too. There was nothing worth buying (or touching), so I was preparing for a miserable day.

The third was small, and mostly x-mas stuff, but I was still able to find a 26" tire bar (1"dia) and a little Lincoln "Lubrigun" grease gun for $6.

The second was a barn sale, with a long line waiting for the opening. It restored my faith in the junk gods. We all stampeded into the barn like the running of the bulls in Spain. I muscled my way to a section of one of the benches and there in front of me was a hunk of metal that I never thought I'd see out in the wild in my lifetime ............... Ever ! ..................... SCOOOOOOOORE !!!!! :rocker:.

As an angelic chorus sang hosannah on high, a light shown through the overcast and alighted upon the bench, illuminating three distinctive shaped forged pieces of steel, it was a ..................... mounting bracket for a 4" blacksmith's vise !!!!!!
angel.gif

As I grabbed the bracket, I heard someone else a few benches down ask for a price on a vise hidden under the bench he was at. It was the blacksmith's vise. I quickly shoved the bracket under my arm and went about my business. (OBTW - she sold the vise for $5 :eyecrazy:)
I've been looking for this bracket for 20yrs. I will now be able to properly mount my vise to my bench ! (as soon as I get around to building it)

So, at the second sale, I picked up the vise bracket, 3 clamps, and a large caliper?/divider?. All for the outrageous sum of $10. :bounce:

BUT WAIT ! - There's more -

As I was leaving, I poked my nose through the free pile that the scrap rats were clearing out. In one of the boxes, under some locking pins, I noticed some hardware that looked suspiciously familiar. Could it be ????????? YES !!!!! I had just found three of the bolts that Craftsman used to mount tools to their open framed tool stands. !!!!!! ANOTHER SCORE :rocker: I've needed one more to mount the motor on my scroll saw, but couldn't find one on eBay that was affordable. Now I had the one I needed, and two spares. :D

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY DANCE !!! View media item 38703Today turned out to be a great day !

I hit a few estate sales today and picked up a few things (top to bottom)

A little nesting blade screwdriver - without the outer/largest screwdriver.
A Plomb Pebble 1130 DBE wrench (5/8 - 9/16).
A VLCHECK DBE wrench
A Long Underline Craftsman DBE (7/16 - 3/8)
A pair of Champion DeArment Channellock 410 Pliers
A pair of Berg (Sweden / Estonia) diagonal pilers - marked 1950 with a shark?
A pair of Utica 356 diagonal pliers marked with a B and "Custom Built - Made to Order".

The Berg pliers cut ok but the Utica's are fine.

Cheers

Jim

OK quite a few stops more than a few duds, but some decent hits also. the foist stop did not bode well. the guy has a bunch or bondhus, Whia and other decent brand metric ball and hex drivers. I gathered them and a couple of other items and he's way high (for me...). I counter he claims he needs them for work and didn't know why his wife put them out. (then why did he set a price? :wtf: )

I drop them back in the box and say "if you need them for work they are not for sale" (if it was his way of negotiating, it backfired...)

He's opening another box of stuff (presumably for sale..) and I spy a small brass hammer with a brass handle. I ask if its for sale and he say's "Yes" "How much?" "$5" I dropped it back in, turned on my heel and walked away...

This was the same guy, a year or so ago, that tried to accuse me of walking away with something and not paying for it. :badteeth: :tard:

Not a great start...

Next stop no one is home...

Finally I got some stuff at no. 3 stop but left half as they wanted stupid $$

I did get this for $3: Cup sized Bucket Boss (I have one from a promo they had a year or two ago, but it's overflowing) I added the Cup, so you could actually see it. a Ford wrench probably 80% of the original black paint still on it, and a couple of brass wheels/guides for a sliding door.

attachment.php

2nd YS netted a Proto /12" 5449 ratchet, a New Britain 3/8 ratchet head, and a decent hatchet handle with good grain. (I left another handle with **** grain 90 deg out..) $8

attachment.php

Got the the bells, Diamond pliers and stubby wood handled driver for a buck at an estate sale (I'm a well known regular with these folks).

attachment.php

And the wood box was a quarter at a yard sale, and the Gauge and clamp were free at another estate sale (I'm a regular for them also, and they were in "clearance mode"..) Gauge is a vacuum gauge and measures in "inches of water" So some strong **** measurement possible there!

attachment.php

I also picked up a 2 drawer sized std file cabinet (actually 3 drawer, 1 file 2 for "stuff") for my daughter. No pics of that, but in good shape and well made.
