Hi guys, ok so here are a couple of of questions, this is mainly for my fellow Canadians in ON. only because pricing would be close, but anyone is welcome to comment, when you finally decided to build why did you pick a garage over a pole barn( which we know isn't always a barn). or vise versa?
Has anyone compared build costs, if you were to finish both types building of the same size in a similar way,, not including concrete, how close or how far part were the costs. I am sure some here has to have done this, pro's or con's, any input would be great and much appreciated . :dunno:

Not from Canada, but if you exclude concrete, I'm sure a pole barn will come out to cost more than a stick build if you finish them both out fully. The biggest cost savings of a pole barn is that you don't have to have a foundation, which adds a lot to the cost of a stick built garage.

It also depends a lot on size. If you're wanting to build a 24x24 or something small, the cost of each type will be a lot closer. Typically, the larger you go, the more economical a pole building becomes.

I'm planning on starting on a 40x64x16 pole barn in the next couple of months. Comparing prices, the pole barn will be quite a bit cheaper than a similar stick build.

I recently got a budgetary quote for concrete to help me make the decision. For a 30 x 36 building, the footing and stem wall line item was $4500. I'm going with the pole barn and saving the $$.

I had estimates both ways from 2 contractors in the UP. Both said that finished to the same level, cost is about the same. Pole construction without a floor is cheaper, of course.

I had a 36' x 48' x10' pole barn built in rural SW Indiana a few years ago. I chose a pole barn primarily because there are two large Amish/Mennonite pole barn builders within about 50 miles. Once they started the building, it was complete (including concrete floor) in 3 or four days. The local stick frame builders would probably stretched the project out for the entire summer.

Thanks for the input guys,, my plan, not sure when, is to go at least 32x40x12,, and as Magkarl said, I think the savings will be if I opt out of going with footings, as that I would have to contract that part out, and go with Pole Barn style. What I save on the footings I'll use towards the cement floor (which is a must have). From what I seen here, if it's done and finished right they look pretty good. Going this route I could do the majority of the work my self saving more $$$, other than ordering engineered trusses, I am sure glad I found this site, thanks again,
