Harbor Freight tools do have a lifetime warranty as far as I know. Most places ask for the receipt, so if that's what you were told I am not surprised. Many people on here report that HF is very lenient on their returns, so even if you lose the receipt you might be ok depending on your local manager.

I have bought many broken HF tools at the flea market and returned them for brand new ones without receipts. They have never once asked me for a receipt.

I've warrantied a few things with them, and I've never needed the receipt, for anything with a lifetime warranty.

Did you ever notice that the ink of HF receipts disappears after a month or two, I'm serious.

Yes sir that applies to most retail store receipts for that matter, especially if left in a hot place. I used to work at advance and the thermal paper they used had that problem.
Created a lot of return prolems sometimes

Yep. I will photo copy or sometimes scan in receipts for expensive purchases.

All thermal paper receipts fade in short time. I've had luck storing them in folders or anywhere there isn't a light source. They seem to last 6-9 months that way.

Nothing like digging out a reciept you were good enough to save for 10 months only to see that it's a blank piece of paper....

Today I bought the PITTSBURGH 4065 Ball Joint Service Kit. At the register I asked if this PITTSBURGH tool is covered by the Lifetime Hand Tool Warranty. The cashier asked the manager and both agreed... NO!!! Not a hand tool even though it says PITTSBURGH on the box. It does not say PITTSBURGH anywhere on the tool, but on the manual enclosed and on the outer cardboard cover of the plastic case.

I looked it up on their web site and found this under the warranty tab of tool #4065...

"Manufacturer Warranty Detail We guarantee this product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship 90 days from the date of purchase. Limitations apply."

The policy is that you need a receipt because of people like below.

Lifetime warranties originated as warranties forever, not for one lifetime of the original consumer. The makers of these warranties had products which they expected to pass to new generations. That concept has been convoluted by corporate lawyers and twisting of the language to a nuance that was not there before. Lifetime warranty meant "forever" when Snap On and Craftsman said it. Now a receipt is needed to limit the warranty to the original purchaser.

Haven't had a problem with harbor freight yet, but only ever had to warranty one piece, not craftsman/sears they give me problems almost every time I got there (maybe I should bring a small bucket of broken tools in) I know snapon is warranted to the original purchaser, but never had a dealer question anything.

I've noticed my matco and Mac receipts fade fairly quick

Pittsburgh hand tools are for the price, the best deal with the warranty, just my opinion. I usually go there looking for a tool before I go anywhere else

If I had to save my receipt for every socket, screwdriver, ratchet, pliers, etc that I bought so that the store (or tool truck) would make good on their LIFETIME WARRANTY promise, I would have a 5 gallon bucket packed full of receipts. Having to save all my receipts for every tool purchase is unreasonable.

The one time I warrantied Pittsburgh tools I had some crummy looking chrome on a wrench set after about a month. The cashier seemed a little surprised when I asked about the warranty.
"Just leave that here and go grab you a new one, hun."
Granted, at that time I spending a lot there and was well known, but it certainly appeared that this was standard practice.

Unreasonable or not, that is their policy and it is something you agree to when making a purchase.

I bought a brad nailer from Harbor Freight in Madison a few years ago and after about a week or 10 days it quit working right. I took it back without the receipt and they just gave me a new one, no hassle at all. I suspect needing a receipt has more to do with each store manager than with corporate policy. It really should not be that way, it should one policy for all stores, but it appears not to be that way.

I have a set of the Pittsburgh Ratchet Wrenches, I like them. I grab them over my craftsmans..........

One thing I have notice though is If I am using the open end, and really torquing on a bolt, sometimes the jaws spring open and the wrench will turn on the bolt/nut.....

It is like they are a softer metal than my craftsmans or something. Anyone else noticed this??

Yeap. Seen a similar problem. When buying sockets, I tend to buy the impacts over the regular if I can swing it just because of the added strength difference.

Well, You just explained why MY HF wrenches have earned their place in the junk tool drawer. When spare time allows, I can cut them off and make stubbies out of them...

Stevenn1:
Asking for a receipt that verifies that You purchased the tool is not unreasonable at all..
Isn't the lifetime warranty agreement between the original purchaser and the tool company??
For many wishful thinkers; They do get by warranting second hand tools, and tools without a receipt... Some call it luck, and some call it entitlement... Any gray clouds in the sky??

Lifetime warranty is only on Pittsburgh hand tools, not specialty tools. Just like Craftsman. All the tools with a lifetime warranty have "lifetime warranty," printed on the packaging.

Yes they are softer. A lot of the tools you buy from HF, Lowes, Home Depot and such are not professional grade. I actually broke a Pittsburgh Pro deep impact socket today at work just tightening up a shock bolt on a truck. Surprised the heck out of me.

I have to admit that the Pittsburgh Pro shallow impact sockets are really damn great. They just need to stamp them as well before I call them perfect. I have the Metric sizes right now and sometime soon I will be picking up the Standard sizes as well. I give these a 9 out of 10. I am probably one of the only one's that will replace them if they break they are affordable and real good quality.

I certainly do, but I've never needed one. As cheap as their hand tools are, it doesn't really matter if they warranty them or not. If you do $10,000 worth of work with a $2 tool you've pretty much come out.

Uh-oh. That's a controversial practice.

It’s way worse than controversial. It amazes me the completely dishonest things people will admit to in a public forum. Even boast about it.

Yes they are impacts and chromes both are great. I don’t like laser etching though they do offer some that are chrome vanadium impacts that have the stamping on them like you mentioned though not the chrome moly ones. I have had no issues getting anything replaced they just break open the set and there you go. I use them professionally and have never had to replace any of them. I only had to replace one of their punches cause it bent 10 seconds after using it and they replaced it no questions asked. Their impacts have a 3 year warranty I believe and they are amazing too so I don’t think I will have to use the warranty for that anytime soon.
