There are some 7" CM grinding wheels in the classifieds. I cannot post a question there. http://tinyurl.com/muz2875

I want to know why the sides(face) of the stones show wear and why the paper labels show rust.

I would not consider these even eligble for a ring test, because moisture will make a stone unsafe, as will grinding on the side(face).

Can you 'get-away with it'? Sure, how lucky do you feel?

Tourque: you been watching a few old Clint Eastwood movies??

as well as GJ runs the forum for us i'm wondering why the classifieds and wanted section has so many issues? was there abuse so they locked it down or ?? i tried to delete an ad off the wanted section when i found the part i wanted and couldn't so just deleted all the information.

anybody got the secret or have the same issues? care to share the secrets of how to use the wanted and classifieds?

Clint is one gritty SOB.

I don't know the backstory on the classified, but I did see that they want you/me to I/M questions. So, I did.

I don't care for that sort of editing. Just my opnion.

Go into edit post, then advanced edit, and there is a delete option.

Outlaw: that works on regular posts and there isn't that option in the Classifieds or Wanted sections of the Journal. i might be missing something, but just spent another 20 minutes trying to delete an old post in both sections and never found the delete.

i'm probably handier on my laptop than with my tools, but if you are sure that will work i will try to do it again later.

thanks for the help

I just checked one of mine: the buttons are there but you must"Edit" then "Go Advanced" to see the delete buttons. The delete is up near the top.

Outlaw: still not working for me on either the Wanted or Classified ads i have listed that i would like to delete. maybe i need another 10,000 posts to get my security clearance. i clicked on Edit, then advanced and not a delete anywhere on the page.

anybody else having the same issue when trying to delete an ad? sorry to clutter up the grinder thread with this, but i know most of you are pretty savvy with GJ as well as restoring 50 year old grinders.

Organ: since you can post on Craigslist and not be responsible for taking down an ad that is sold or responding in a timely matter all you can do is keep looking. on another note Craigs email system is not working as well now since they changed to emailing through their Craigs email links instead of using our emails like they did in the past. not sure why, but keep up the search and you will find another block for your shop.

Finally got to see my new addition this morning. Runs smooth, may have a wheel out of round. I think the drill it sharpener is missing a piece, I just need to research. I didn't realize that it is rear discharge, seems a little heavier than the other 1/2 HP that I have. Stand is nice and heavy.
Was thanking my wife for helping pick up and laughing about my son harassing me on all of my grinders when she said " I was wondering why you bought this when you have four already". I didn't pry to see if she was referring to four block grinders ( this one makes six, she missed one), or four in total, ( I now have ten total, she missed a bunch).I'll let sleeping dogs lie:evil:.
I'll pop the cover to see if any date in the next few days.

Also received a New norton 8" wheel off eBay, for non ferrous metal. $ 23.00 shipped.

It's "delete Message" not "Delete thread", and you may need to work from the bottom post up.

My daughter picked it up, seller loaded for her, wife and daughter unloaded.
My wife had me committed for buying too many, but forgot to take the iPad away.:lol_hitti
They treat me good. I'm back at it now.

Another 397.19340 here!

Folks, found this on craigslist today! I've been looking at grinders for a while and couldn't come to grips with paying over $100 for a new decent one. So, I started looking at used ones and found this. I knew nothing about them. Researching on the internet lead me to this thread with an unbelievable amount of great info. Based on all your observations in this thread, I quickly decided that, as much of an old grinder as this is, it would probably work for me.

I went to look at it. As you can see, it is complete and in very good condition. Fired it up and it just hummed along so I said I'll take it! Paid $40. Already took it for a drive sharpening a couple of chisels. I just need to polish the scratches off the eye shields. Next up, the mower blades.

It doesn't say it's the commercial version, but it seems robust enough... I don't know what the difference would be.

Is there any preventative maintenance that should be done on these? Like oiling/lubing the bearings or something? The seller did not have an owners manual.

Thanks a bunch for all the great info on this forum and hope to make a good contribution down stream.

Lou

Thanks! Quick question, is there an adjustable aftermarket tool rest that can be used to precisely set chisel angle for optimal sharpening? I'm finding that having to eyeball / handhold is a little tough for precise sharpening. Looking for a cost effective one that works.

Thanks in advance. Lou

You can find sharpening jigs for chisels. I've never used one but I've seen them in woodworking catalogs.

Picked up a '74 1/2 HP for $40. I think it needs a bearing. Can someone tell me what kind I need? It was kept in a woodworking shop and was full of sawdust but cleaned up nicely. Also, any place sell cooling trays?

Today, while browsing my local wholesale junk warehouse, I came across a 1 HP block. Lamp, spark arrestors, shields, cooling tray, etc. ... I know it gets used; it's the only bench grinder in their workshop. Would it be uncouth to make an offer? It sure is a beauty.

If you can't find one from a donor grinder, then this tray may work for you :

They're in the selling business. Not uncouth at all, they can always say no. Take the lighthearted approach. That way if they don't want to sell it you haven't ticked them off and can still haggle with them over other things.

Congradulations!

Here's a thread about ordering bearings online.

For cooling tray, try:

"Would it be uncouth to make an offer?" - a true Blockhead does not let such things stop them. :D

Hard to tell without seeing and hearing. I'm cheap - $60 would be my top end in good shape, but I might go a little more if I HAD to have it. Definitely more if it had the original Cman pedistal base.

I picked up this 1/4 hp from Craigslist last weekend. I mainly wanted it for the stand, but for $25 I got a working grinder too. It's pretty rusty, but I'm hoping this weekend I can take it apart and see if I can restore it. It definitely needs a new power cord.

Data plate shows it's from '54. I'll be cleaning up the stand first to mount my grandfathers old 1/3hp which is in great shape.

Nice older CM grinder. What is the model number? Maybe a close up of the machine label/plate?

It looks like the 1st CM grinder I picked up; a 1/3 HP, model no. 115.7566.

If it is a similar vintage/model, it has a start-up capacitor and a RPM activated cut-out switch. Be careful if it does.

Here's the thread.

Have fun and remember - pictures are always welcome.

Are we talking wood chisels or cold chisels ? Wood see above. Cold I've never seen.

Another fixture you want for wood chisels is a rolling honing fixture to finish the edge on a whetstone.

Be happy I stayed home and didn't go up there scouring CL this past weekend, otherwise it would of been mine ;) Only because it has the stand, that's a steal, I would of been all over it.

Just noticed the block I bought today is branded "Craftsman commercial". Does that mean it's one of the industrial rated ones? What's the difference between the industrial rated ones and the others?

Old boy, organ and sho92,
Nice finds and welcome to the Cult.
Isn't nice to buy these, even if they appear in rough shape and buying a few parts and having a great long term grinder.
Look forward to your rehabs.
Before long, there'll be a thread on the CM stands with some grinders that happen to be on them.

"Commercial" or "Industrial" typically means the grinder is dual voltage - 115/230 VAC, ...

but, not always.

The 1 HP Block grinders are getting pricey.

Two years ago, I found a 1 HP Model 257.191600, Commercial Crown Top, 1 owner - a retired Sears HW salesman. I paid the most $$ I have ever spent on a used grinder - $95 w/ Sears Stand.

I think one went for $220+ on eBay a few days ago.

So, the offer will depend on location, condition, and condition. Oh, and how much of a Blockhead you are. Ooops, I've done it again haven't I? Sorry.

If all the pieces are there, the more I am willing to offer. And unless the stator/windings, or rotor are damaged, the grinder can be brought back.

The biggest rescue I've done is: " Block Grinder rescue - UPDATE: Go-Blue! 1 H.P. Model 257.191600"
http://tinyurl.com/Go-Blue-Block-Grinder
It needed alot of work, but the switch, and relay cleaned up nicely. They are available, if needed.

Good luck, I hope to see pictures of it in your garage in 15 mins.

I want one of those cooling tray mounts. I don't need one but want one just because they're so cool.

You have any kicking around, TorqueMan???
