Anybody used filing cabinets instead of toolboxes in thier garage?
Used filing cabinets seem so much cheaper than toolboxes and down here (less than half the price of a similar sized toolbox) andin New Zealand we dont have great places like Harbor freight etc...

any suggestions?

What kind of tools are you filling them with? I would think too much weight would keep them from opening and closing smoothly.

probably just loading them with the large but not too heavy things. like drills, sanders, polisher etc. im not sure of the load capacity of the draws , but after having to unload my work filing cabinet to move it, id say it'd be ok?

Are you just trying to find a use for them or are not wanting to buy a tool box? I know boxes are expensive, but sears has the "hobbyist" box for around $200. It's not bad for the price.

As said, they work well for skill saws, drills and such.
But for wrenchs, screw drivers and such the map cabinets work better.
The multiple, shallow drawers just work better.

Yes that the sort of thing I was after. I have a 10 draw Waterloo toolbox and 5 draw Waterloo roller cab for my hand tools so was looking for a cheaper option for bulkier things. They will look great painted red to match the toolbox. I'm just the planning stage for my new house with a 20x25 garage with a workshop down the side.

I've always waned to get a few filing cabinets and use them to make a work bench with a steel top for the garage, i bet they can hold a lot of weight in those drawers so long as they are sufficiently loaded on the bottom (and i know at least 35+ lbs in a middle drawer is no problem). You're idea should be perfect, I always thought they would be awesome parts bins as well.

I have these installed in my work bench, not a file cabinet but similar. They are super heavy duty so I use one of them to store reloading components (lots of heavy lead) and the other is bulky power tools.
