I appreciate the question and understand we are a little oversized at 1 1/4 copper pipe on the main runs. It probably is way over kill:headscrat We have a 175 foot run from one end to the other. What size do you think it should have been?
I don't know a lot about sizing air lines for a big shop but I am certain Don Long does. Before he built his Big Party Garage he ran a chain of body shops. He recently added a sand blast box to his shop and put in 1-inch air lines for just the sand blaster. I don't think a quarter-inch larger is unreasonable for all the air tools, spray guns AND sandblaster that your system will service. Here's Don's post:
Now the work must continue or I will never complete the projects at hand so I have been working on the sand blast box.
I am getting it ready to paint. removed the decals and sanded the box

Got on craigs list and found a 300 lb preasure pot blaster and it needs a larger compressor to run it so I am now wiring up one just for sandblasting
then I will run a 1 " air line to the box from the new compressor, hang lights and juice the air makeup and I will be in business (end of week)

Mark....glad to see that you decided to go with the copper instead of PVC. A lot of people used schedule 40 and had problems. Although Schedule 80 is a lot thicker and it may handle it just fine......if you DID use it and something did happen, since you are now going to be a full fledged business, you could have been oped for a potential lawsuit from someone if they got hurt.

You may or may not want to read this, and others can or not, that is up to them, but this is from OSHA on PVC lines https://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=INTERPRETATIONS&p_id=20202

So for home use, Schedule 80 may be fine for some, but for a business, play it safe. A few feet of coppers is way less in cost than a lawsuit.:beer:

On the air lines if anything 1-1/4" is to small the body shop where I worked had 2" pipe with 1/2" drops to each of the 8 bays. It also used to big compressors that were tied together. The compressor's switched each time they were needed

I know I'm late to this party, but did I spot a Mr. Toad statue outside the magnificent garage that started this thread?

If so, that's the icing on that incredible cake.

Very well done. That's one hell of an achievement.

Why don't you pick up one of those vinyl curtains so you can pull it closed when you doing work like that. They fold up against the wall and do not take up much space. They are not that expensive. I plan on using some of these dividers in the shop.
Yes, you need something to define the bar, lounge and big screen TV area.

Shops looking good. What will you use to clear coat the copper? I would think a industrial or automotive clear would work fine.
I don't think 1-1/4" is too over kill, it'll give you a lot of additional capacity and flow will never be a problem. Just think a long and skinny tank!

My buddy helping me with the job had some 1.5 inch pipe dropped off friday. This job is getting out of control!! This has been you guys' idea so anyone chipping in on the copper:dunno:

Thanks Bob. I keep an eye on Don's thread and spoke to him by phone a few weeks ago. Any of the tough decisions I am running by him because he is the man when it comes to setting up shops.

Here is a shot of the front. It is a buddy of mines truck and he has left it with me for a while to drive. I probably won't drive it. Its pretty dusty in this shot but we will clean it up and keep it around for a conversation piece.

Yes I have been beat into submission. I am glad you guys talked me into it;)

Yes Mr Toad was a fixture for a while outside the garage. My wife and I bought it out in California years ago. Right now it is sitting over a my mom's house in her garden.

No one was working at the new shop today so I decided to get some floor painted. The concrete was pretty slick so we have sanded about 1/2 of it so far. I used a two part acrylic epoxy on the floor I have used on other floors. Its made by Scott paint and the product is just about as hard as a solvent based product. At $45 per gallon it doesnt break the bank. This is stickly an indoor product. I wanted to get 3000 sq feet done today and by myself i got the right tools for the job. An 18" roller and a 18" roller pan that holds 3 gallons of paint at a time. With 3 gallons of paint in it I set it only a pallet and rolled it around on my pallet jack:lol: I made some serious progress today on the first coat.

I bought a 61 Corvette on Saturday. I literally bought it on the street out in front of the new shop. What intriged me about the car is the fact it was a 283 dual quad 270 hp 4 speed car. The block is original but unfortunately the intake and carbs were changed out in favor of a single carb. I am now looking for the right carborator set up to go back on the car. It needs a little TLC but I know its got a a good pedigree. I will tighten the car up and then resell it.

Hey guys.....thank you so much for hanging in there for me:thumbup: This forum is my home and you guys have been a very big part of keeping my dream alive. The support and incouragement has been awesome. You comments and opinions have been a part of my decision making. Heck, when I got my $3400 bill for the copper pipe the first thing I thought of were the guys who cost me all this money because they wanted me to have rigid pipe.... With all of your support I have almost felt a obligation to keep this "thing" going.

Many turns have been taken and somehow this "garage" has given me the opportunity to enjoy my love of cars. It has also given me a place to play, dream, and build some really nice cars. Somewhere along the way this turned into much more.

I must admit I started looking at larger facilities about the time I met Thom. The chance encouter was through the internet. Ironically he lived only miles from where I grew up. A GM engineer Thom left to start his own business. As a metal shaper, frame builder, wiring genius, and computer expert he built quite a nice business. Myself with our ever expanding crew was looking for a guy just like Thom. I was acutally looking for something less and what we got was a jackpot so to speak. Thom also wanting to grow was moving more out of "running" a business and more into his creative skill. What we share in common is a good work ethic. A plan was made and we decided to join forces. Thom has a complete metal working facility we will be moving to Florida in May.

Not only did we acquire a great talent, but we were also able to acquire a special new name for our business............GodSpeed Rides. What a name and a new beginning for our next level move. Our website will be lauched soon and I cant wait to turn you guys onto it.!! Thank you for being here for me and I really apprecite all you guys have done for me.

The offspring of the Monster Garage has started a life of its own.

Congrats to GodSpeed Rides and the whole talented crew. From the work ethics you have shown in your own shop, the attention to detail and the awesome quality of projects you create, GodSpeed Rides will succeed far beyond your dreams. And we've all enjoyed your dreams so far!

Congrats, Mark!

thanks guys I really appreciate it. We still have the booth off site we are using. I cant tell you how much work I am putting into this shop just to get it rolling. The offices have taken a back seat to getting these air lines in, the floors painted, compressor set up, and just general things we are doing to get the shop open. I have at least 3 or 4 people working at the new shop every day and we are working our tails off. The shop is huge and is a big undertaking. This is the kind of challenge I like.

Looking forward to the day we get our booth set up.!!

Congrats, Mark. An undertaking of this size should guarantee the success of your new business. You've shown you believe in doing things to the best of your ability and the new name mirrors that. Thanks for including GJ in this venture. Best wishes!

Congratulations Mark

What started out as a garage build on Garage Journal, is now a full blown business enterprise & that is just awesome.

For me, sitting here on the other side of the Atlantic, I can only look in on the "American Car Culture". One way I do that is by watching the car shows on Discovery channel & while I realise that most "real car guys" view these shows as nothing more than made for TV drama, I find them to be entertainment, with glimpses in the car world that exists to such a huge extent in the U.S. thrown in for good measure.

But, these are just shows on TV, so it's like looking out at the world from a goldfish bowl. With the exception of taking a visit to & a shop tour of, West Coast Customs, while on holidays in California last year, I never get any closer than the TV screen.

But here on Garage Journal, we have a direct connection to what is now, a full blown Automotive Shop. Your "Monster Garage Build" Mark, was simply amazing, combining an awesome garage, combined with the building of an equally fabulous home & now, we are set to watch the building & running of "God Speed Rides" all the while being able to participate with the owner on an online forum. That is just fantastic

You opened the Monster Garage to the members here on GJ, last year (IIRC) which was very generous of you. Of course being sat over here in sodden, cold Ireland, I wasn't able to attend. However, "Mrs Kered" & I are very close to pulling the trigger on our annual holidays for later this, with Orlando, in November, being top of the list. So if that comes to fruition, I may have to look at taking a spin over to visit God Speed Rides ;)

In the meantime, I wish you the very best of luck in your new venture Mark & I look forward to looking in on "God Speed Rides" through the portal of Garage Journal.

Congrats to you and your crew Mark. Those of us here on GJ get to enjoy your success, watch your projects, and sometimes spend your money, like on the air lines. Dang, we're just like family.

Thanks for the ride. We're all looking forward to what's next.

I think that stickers or even emblem plaques of the logo should also go on all the awesome creations that rolled out of the Monster Garage before it became GodSpeed Rides! After all, it was the team and leadership that created them, not the building they were built in!
