The craftsman USA full polish are nice. Look for them used, they are Armstrong rebrands made by Danaher.

For long pattern combination I like Armstrong/matco extra longs they are some of the longest combination wrenches on the market with a broadest range imo they are longer than Williams super combo and as long as the long pattern snap on and cornwell but go up to 1 inch and 21mm vs 3/4 and 19mm like snap on and cornwell

Out of curiosity what makes a $150 fifteen piece wrench set (Like Wright) stupid expensive? $10 per wrench... Heck of a deal when you think about it :dunno: I wouldn't make wrenches for $10 each. I'd charge more than that just to polish the chrome out.

Napa wrenches from cripe on ebay for $10 plus $6.50 shipping: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Napa-7PC-Fu...91500981?pt=US_Hand_Tools&hash=item5aeb1b71b5 I added some double boxes to expand set at twice the cost of the set for each of the protos and 1 1/2 the cost of set for each of the craftsmans. I added a 17x19 and 22x24 proto double box and a 21x23 and a 24x26 craftsman double box. I have used the napas and they are fine. My wrenches are stupid inexpensive! LOL But not stupid cheap thats harbor freight whose chrome looks like fake chrome from plastic!

OK, can someone rank the quality of these wrenches

Snap-On
Armstrong
Wright
Williams
Carlyle
NAPA
Craftsman
SK
KD
Proto

now this deal is at least low markup - I like this cripe place

PS - the Canadian wrench suggestions seem to be a good deal, but I am not in Canada and the shipping would be really high!

I posted a link to this. I like the napas

Except that set does not meet your stated requirement of no skips...that set is missing the 16,17 and 19mm sizes. Unless your looking into buying singles to fill out the set.
I filled in w/ proto double boxes (and some craftsman and proto above 19mm)and a gearwrench long 16mm.

For combinations, I like the ones I listed above, but I agree with you. If and when I decide to get a double box set, I am definitely looking at Proto. The sets are tad pricey but good deals can be had from Trident Industrial Supply with the GJ discount.

I have the Wrights in metric and SAE. They are phenomenal. I never liked the Snap-On; the beams are too thin for me. For me, it was definitely the best value for the dollar. I've never regretted investing in them.

Just recently got a set of metric long reach combo wrenches from northern tool ( klutch brand ) set is 10-24 mm with 23mm being the only skip. seem to fit the fasteners very well. this is my first experience with the klutch brand but if they hold up as well as the northern tool brand wrenches I own I will be very happy. price was 49.99 plus shipping.

first I've ever heard about Wright wrenches having chrome issues. Most people on here say their chrome is among the best out there...

There was one person on here who got one or two bad wrenches out of a set 2-3 years ago, which HJE promptly replaced. Hell, I think even someone from Wright came on the forum and wanted to make sure they got the wrench back so they could figure out what happened to it.

Their customer support is top notch from experiences I and others have had with them.

No, I am just tired of paying ridiculous markup just to get quality

then everyone says "tools are an investment" and no one is arguing that, but I don't want to pay 5 times what my "investment" is worth!

and also, just because a tool is "made in USA" it seems that folks are automatically assuming it is Snap-On quality - before I even pay the $137 price, it had better be every bit the tool the Snap-On is, or now we are compromising quality, when what I am trying to compromise is the ridiculous mark-up!

I'm not sure you understand what mark up is. You have to know the manufacturing cost to know what their mark up is. Next, if you want to complain about ridiculous mark ups, it's better if you don't use cell phones as your reference. There is a reason why Apple is sitting on huge amounts of cash and it's not because they are charging 10% over cost. Finally, cost does not only include the price of steel. There is a lot more into it than that.

A $100 set of wrenches doesn't seem like a whole lot to me, when you consider the complete supply chain to get you that set. Now Cripe is a different animal, and yeah their mark up is probably huge, but they buy dead stock for pennies in bulk.

I think your expectations are unrealistic. $150 for a complete set of NEW long pattern metric combo wrenches is pretty representative of the cheaper end of the market.

If you forgo the "long pattern" requirement you will be able to find decent tools at a much lower price point (as most every tool company makes a standard length wrench) whereas long pattern wrenches are available more for the professional.

The best lower cost long pattern wrench I know of is Gearwrench. If that's too rich for you get some raised panel wrenches at Sears or Stanley at Walmart and use a cheater pipe as needed...

look, I like Snap-On quality, but they have a shameful crazy markup

The only way you're going to get near Snap-On quality for a lower price is from Williamns. Look at the Williams SuperCombos made in the USA and are the only ones that share the Flank Drive Plus design like the Snap-On have.

Must have been two years ago now but their were several threads on the subject and when I looked at them in the hardware store you could see discoloration deep in the chrome in spots. I bought a Wright 9/16 and it got a couple light marks near the box end. I think they fixed it but worth mentioning anyway.

Carlyle have the same open end as well.

Except the smaller size's open ends spread much easier than Snap On's. The quality of the Armstrong wrenches that I mentioned earlier in this thread are of better than the Williams.

The OP wants high quality wrenches basically for free.....

Just get the industrial finish Wrights.. They're easier to grip when slippery (yes, it really helps).

They're beafy and thick for good grip, but not too thick. The Wrightgrip works better than SO's FD+ (SO's seems to grab the hex and not let go, but will spin on the metal. Wrightgrip just grabs).

And the Wrights are cheap. Wright > SO.

They sell the 15pc metric long pattern set at the menards stores where I live for 74.99 and the wrenches are awesome for cheap wrenches. I have the SAE and metric 15 pc sets of these
