Built the Kids a Fort

Finally put my newly acquired tools to use and built my kids a fort. I'm definitely metal oriented as far as building and fabrication and as such this was my first attempt at a construction project. Still needs some finishing and have to put up a climbing wall on the right side, but being as I work out of town my main goal was to get it usable and safe before I had to go back to work. It was certainly a learning experience.

That is very cool. I'm contemplating a similar project this spring. I love how sturdy yours is without just using a kit.

Where did you get the plans/directions on how to build it? I have done just about every home repair known to man at this point but I have never built a deck or structure like that.

Thanks guys. I just build it out of my head. I had a good idea of what I wanted it to look like, made sure it was totally overkill as far as sturdiness and started cutting and screwing. My brother and I were both walking around on top of the wall on one side at the same time and there was little movement. If it can take 450 lbs like that I'm satisfied it's kid safe.

Beautiful job! I'm envious of you guys with carpentry skills. The thing I do best with wood is burn it in my fire pit...

Looks great, I'm sure your kids will love it.

Question.....what's in the box at the bottom of the slide, looks like rubber chips. If so, why?

Nice job. What do you have planned for the opposite side of the slide? Zip line? Netting climb? Keep those pics coming.

Nice job Codey. I built something similar for my sons when they were young. I planned ahead and sized it so it would eventually become an extra shed for my back yard. When they were in their early teens they helped me tear it down, relocate it and refinish it. I think that was the most fun they had with it!

Here it is before I added the battens and stained it ...

What a great play house, Your kids will enjoy it for yrs. Only one question, why did you not use fiberglass roofing panels, then the sun light would of came in also?

Thanks guys, it was a fun build. My 2 year old son helped me for most of it and I'm sure it took about 50% longer because of it, but that's part of the fun.

Certainly an alternative method of using roof material.

As far as the roof goes, time and material options were very limited. Enough fiberglass roofing panels were not available locally so I went with the tin, and there was barely enough of them. I'd have needed 6 panels to run the channels vertically, and have about 5' of waste from each panel. Didn't think I would make a big enough difference on a fort to justify it.

The kid catcher at the bottom of the slide is rubber mulch. That slide is deceptively fast. My 6 year old daughter lands okay for the most part but the little guy usually does a superman impression when his feet touch the ground. Just softens the blow when he doesn't stick the landing.

Climbing wall will be going up on the other side, the holds just showed up so that will be the next thing to do.

Very neat, that's a good idea. Kinda wish I'd planned for that eventuality.

I remember building several structures, starting with ones assembled from packing crates in the cellar, then outdoor buildings from scrap wood. A treehouse was always a dream but there were no expendable trees available.

Building them was always more fun, and more instructive, than actually using them. I learned a lot about ideas that don't work. A neighbor built a small house, with a door and windows, for his daughters and I don't remember their playing in it often.

Very nice build!
I saw this thread just in time my bro in law was just talking to me about building one for/with my 3yr old nephew. This is certainly a great reference.

Mine looked a LOT like yours before I modified it. It had eight posts and I attached the second floor joists to them. The second floor of the play structure was about 5' high. I just removed the second floor, rebuilt it with about 7' of head room and cut the bottom ends of the posts off.

The hardest part was toppling it so we could rebuild it. It was probably the most fun part too!
