I am sure I will never use them, but have been fishing for a set for a couple years or more. I buy one or two at the swap meet or yard sale once in awhile, followed some on ebay but missed them. I think I've seen them at half price, but may have been years ago when Sears was doing crazy sales, wrecked me to buying a set other than similar cheap.

I use them all the time for push-to-connect fittings in automation.

Yeah I got a set. Use them as "obstruction" wrenches. So basically worthless to me. These are cheap though. I bought my metric set for like 8 bucks used.:( I've used them before. They are well made.

I use them for about the same thing you did.....they hold down the shelf liners in my toolbox.

Actually I just remembered, month or so ago I bought my first complete set at the swap meet. Dug through a box to find all of them and took them up to the seller, he says, are those Craftsman? Me, nope.

Herbrand aint bad though, 15/64 to 1/2 angle set open ends.

Thank you PassnThru. I check these every time I go in the store but they are never discounted. I never check online to look for price drops.

I use the 5.5mm, 7mm and 8mm for work all the time. But I don't have any for my personal set at home and there is a open spot waiting for them right now! I work on Japanese Automation and Robots so everything is metric and often small.

Added the picture. I have the space on the left side for 10 small wrenches that has been sitting empty. I got the SAE on the right side around 18 years ago. Guess you can say I have been waiting for it to go on sale for 18 years. hahaha

I do tend to use these several times a year. I never throw anything away without disassembling it looking for parts to keep - stuff that might come in handy some day. Electronics tend to have some very small hardware. Look at it this way - you probably have a 4mm socket right? We all know that there are times that you can't use a socket but you can get a wrench in there. I personally hate having a socket size that I don't have a wrench for. About half of each set in the larger sizes is duplicated in most wrench sets but the smaller ones aren't really available any other way.

I have used the open ends for removing almost impossible reach and rusted hose clamps. you know, the ones that you get to remove by turning 1/8 turn at a time...

Two uses where almost nothing else will do:

Switches and dials on older equipment. They have a threaded sleeve with a thin nut on either side of a sheet metal panel. The rear nut requires a thin wrench. Sometimes having a thin wrench avoids removing the knob or fixture on the front.

So basically you use them where other tools would also work, but these are just there?

No, quite often these are the only wrenches that will work. Either a normal open end wrench will be too thick or the space is too awkward to fit it lengthwise. The two most common sizes I use are 6 mm and 8 mm.

I still can't believe so many people asked 'Why do I need these?'!
I had to double check that I posted this to Garage Journal and not some other site.
You guys will buy any tool on sale whether you need it or not :dunno:
I'm thinking maybe you guys have a problem with midgets - whoops sorry there - not PC -let's say little wrenches instead. :lol_hitti

Your right about that! I was surprised how crappy they looked. Rough edges with a sharp point on the closed end. I compared them with my 18 year old SAE set and my old set were much nicer. The metal was not as thick in my older set but they sure looked a lot better. Even the set I got whilst working in Canada that was made in Taiwan looked better, but that is only for my work tool bag. Actually the Taiwan set looks the best out of all three sets.

Yeah just saying that you can find things like ignition wrenches in these big box mechanics tool set deals. Among other tools.
