GE window AC unit

I'm looking at a used 23000btu GE window unit A/C for my shop.
Everything looks ok, it runs quiet.
My one concern though,
When the owner turned it on for me, it took 5 to 10 minutes for the compressor to kick on and start cooling.
He claims it always did that when its cooler outside. When its warmer he claims it comes on almost instantly.
Is this something normal, the delayed compressor reaction?
Could it be a simple fix?
Should I walk away from this?

That's what they do. My 25K unit is the same way.

I've never noticed mine doing that, it seems to always kick right on, but maybe that's cause I only use it when it's really warm and/or humid in the garage?

BTW, you will LOVE having that thing in the garage - it makes it sooooo much more pleasant to work.

Is it 220v unit? Seems like it would have to be at that size.....

The protective circuit sees cold, thinks it was just running and inserts a wait to allow the compressor head pressure to bleed off.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

OK, the owner that has it now says its a 2001 model. Would a unit this old have the protective circuit you mentioned nehog?

They've been like that a long time. Even my cheapie 6500 unit does that.

thanks for all the info guys. I decided to pass on it. I kind of thought $200 was a tad high for a 13 year old unit. The guy wouldn't budge on the price.
I'll just wait until they are on sale and get a new one.

Yes, I agree with you on this.
$200 is too high for a 13 year old unit in MHO.
I would go with new or something newer.

I paid 250 for a two year old 25k yesterday in washington illinois on craigslist and I think I shoulda got it for 200 but they only come down to 250 from 300. Cant wait to have a/c even though its undersized its better than nothin.

X2. Walmart sells a GE 24K for $474 on the web site. 24 hour timer, slide out chassis, remote, digital thermostat - reads pretty decent specs.
