Railrunner: i'll help a little until the guys on the east coast and Midwest get up tomorrow. i like your Athol vise, but really hard to tell if the one foot and jaws have been welded or brazed or if that is just dirt from being in the scrap yard.

in any case you shouldn't get hurt too bad at that price for 2 vises even if you end up only using them as a donor on a better similar vise later.

tell us if there are any cracks or welds on the Athol. there also looks like a missing piece of cast and can't tell if important or where it is in the close up picture. give as many details as you can and the expression "these guys are good on the vise thread" will amaze you.

sorry to say the Wilton might be a donor. if it doesn't have any cracks or broken parts and the screw moves the jaw back and forth then while you are looking for the missing swivel base you can put it on a shelf or drill a hole on the other side of the base so you can mount it on a bench.

oh and by the way Welcome to Garage Journal and you are in a good place to learn and share what you know.

Nine: i know you like Craftsman boxes, but check out what a Cole vise goes for and check out the pictures of a few with the drill press piece they have as options.

I bought it to flip, it needs jaw pads, interested?

LMAO, sold it today and picked up a vintage tool box ( might be a 1965 Snap On) and the unusual vise today.

Have a good one, Gerard

The MBC box? Certainly built by the makers of Snap On during that period, great box, congrats!

Thanks, This one is going to work better for my plans. I do need to find one handle for a drawer and the missing lock. It would be good to know where to look.

Here's another little Craftsman painted in ugly colors. I post these as a public service for what colors to not paint your vises.

Edit: I'm just kidding, I actually like these offbeat colors on the older Craftsmen.

.

I look forward to seeing your work, it's fun. I think it's cool!

Take care!

I also happen to like that color scheme on the Craftsman. Looks great in my opinion.

Yes I did. Thanks for ruining the surprise! However, I was incorrect about the jaw size. It's 5 3/4", I can't put it on the scale at the moment but it nearly broke my back carrying it up the stairs by myself. Now it's stuck on my kitchen counter lol

Without further delay...

The jaw pads are 'okay' I'll probably grind them smooth. I need to find a new set of serrated ones though. KMScott?

Also the only other issue is that one end of the handle is a nut welded on, so I need to get a new handle made, any ideas?

I forgot to mention that I'd have never gotten it without Mike (zoomieport) he texted me and gave me the heads up. And for everyone wondering. I did not pay the $175 they listed it for.

I you are looking to repair that handle, try finding an industrial metal supply house near you. I'm sure Michigan has a few of those around and they should carry a selection of different sized metal balls for ornamental uses.

I made a late model Reed handle from scratch with some bar stock and a pair of those metal balls. I think the raw materials cost me about 3.00

In fact, i will be repair an very early (pre-1900) C.Parker with the exact same problem. The end fell off so it was threaded and a square nut was applied. If i get a chance, ill take pictures of the process so you can see how easy it is.

Railrunner, welcome to the best DIY Forum on the net! :D Congrats on the fine score too. Keep us posted on your progress.

And Andrew ... the more you post, the more I adore you. The vise on the kitchen counter just sealed the deal. If I was more forward I'd propose right now. LMAO!!!

Chick, the fact that you don't see a problem with a vise on the kitchen counter will probably get YOU a few proposals from complete strangers, not to mention the inevitable "Do you have a sister?" question...

This one is too rich for my blood but I found the jaws and stand very unique:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Morgan-Chic...441?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58aeae63c9

I saw this vise in person myself a few weeks ago. It's at a steel & surplus place I frequent quite often.

About 15 feet behind the photographer is a huge vise selling for $295. I can't remember the manufacturer, didn't take a detailed photo. uploadfromtaptalk1398014915960.jpg
uploadfromtaptalk1398015026773.jpg

Next to that one is an Athol for $195, standing the same height. I was tempted on getting the Athol, but seemed too pricey. This place has a tendency of pricing certain items too high for the average buyer. But on the flip side, I've found certain treasures there priced right or very low.

Truth be told, the 727 in my Barracuda got rebuilt on my kitchen table and it's seen more than its share of carburetors over the years. I also have a nasty habit of washing old intake manifolds in my bath tub over the winter because I'm too much of a wuss to do it outside in the cold. :D (No sisters, just one older brother who never liked to get dirty. My dad built and ran stock cars and I was the Pit Crew from as far back as I can remember; I never grew out of it ... I just got worse as I got older.)

Outlaw thanks for posting the pictures. i wonder if they really chopped up the jaws on that 8 inch vise to make that thing?

Pup that 289.5 is a Chas Parker and maybe 200 ish pounds. it looks like maybe a frankenvise because the jaws don't match up. also missing the pipe jaws looks like in the picture.

Cuda: sounds like maybe you need an oil pan off a 69 Charger powercoated and pinstriped to be that hat for your reed instead of a knitted stocking. nice stories about the use of the bathtub and kitchen table.

i just mentioned to one member to put his vise in the oven before and after painting.

Happy Easter guys (and gals)

I decided to clean up and paint the two vises I have that aren't bolted to anything. I guess I need more workbenches

I still need to make some copper jaws for the smaller one and do something about the broken dust cap end on the larger one.

Finished the Soderfors today. Wine Red again. :D

Dug out an old thick washer of suitable proportions for the rear of the slide, and gave it a quick scrub up. Added an old full nut to finish it off and lock the nut in place.

1398033115soderfors_rear_final.jpg

She works sweet as a nut for a 93 year old vice. Tolerances aren't super tight on the leadscrew holes on the slide, but no signs of wear as such, so that looks to be how she was made.

Hopefully the paint job looks a bit better than it did when I got her. :D

Happy Easter guys (and gals)

I think all they did was remove the original jaws and machined the pipe adapter jaws to fit.

Wow, Lots o' newly refurbed vises popping up guys! Great jobs all; even Balanes's with all those colors he's using up so his missus, can't use them in their home!

I finally got my post vice mounted. 12" dia. hole, 4' deep and a 24" square pad 6" thick. I made the post from some 4x6 angle and filled it with cement. In all, 800 pounds of cement. Welded on a 1 1/8" thick plate for the top and called it good.

The vise is a 6" Iron City.

I hope it will work, because it isn't coming out!

You didn't mention any rebar. No rebar, no good. You'll have to rip it out and start all over again. :D

Sincerely, be careful not to back the truck into it.

Actually, there is rebar in it and I welded angle iron on the sides of the post. I didn't want to sound like I got carried away with it. :)

Man, now you put the whammy on me. I already ran into the shop wall, with the tractor.

Fretters: I'm really getting used to the color you like to paint your cool tools and nice looking vice too.

did you grind an angle on that washer? also i like how you double bolted the main screw that sticks out the end of the dynamic. that big LM & V vise i have like that i was going to tap and drill a hole into a bolt and the screw and if i have the space a double screw looks much easier.

keep up the great finds and restores. by the way did you ever pull the cast iron out of the "E" bath and post any pictures on the thread we had going?

91 i really like your steel table almost as much or maybe more than your nice Wilton vises. nice job and a $1 freeze plug from the Auto parts store might replace the missing dust cover.

can you share how you made the replacement copper jaws?

The first of many...:evil::evil:

That, Sir, is one helluva pickup stopper...

I could see me walking into it, in the dark, after being too lazy to turn on the lights/blundering around, not looking where I'm going...etc....:wtf::wtf:

Las Vegas is a unique Craigslist environment... we don't get a lot of quality aged USA tools here, and when they do, they do not last long.

This Wilton popped up today and within 45 minutes it was sold... and not to me. I did pickup two grinders though... an Craftsman Block Grinder and a Wissota.

It could be a good week, one of my warehouse guys gave me a little vise this morning. It looks like a H B Smith / Colton. It has PHOENIX across the top of the dynamic jaw. I spotted another Wilton at an estate sale later this week. Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend.

I have seen some that just look like a row of bumps across. If you zoom in a little you can make it out.
