The blade is raised and lowered by turning the large chrome knob. That hole may be for a locking handle for setting the angle of the blade. I don't recall. I had a cheaper model of that saw that I pulled out of the trash years ago but scraped it when I found a used Makita contractor's saw. (I kinda wish I still had it to tinker with now)

What is the model number ? A search for the manual may provide the answer.

Ted, as mentioned the crank on the front raises and lowers the blade; there is another on the left side that set the angle.

Based on the fence guide bar, that should be an 8" saw. Nothing wrong with that, it just limits depth of cut a bit.

The hole.... It was put there to confuse people 50 years later, and make them ask questions no one has the answers to!

Tedster: i have a crown top that is a little newer without that cool stand or the extra pieces on the sides that doesn't have that hole.

i guess Outlaw is right again. those old engineers knew 60 years later we would be asking about a hole they put on the saw.:dunno:

i am pretty sure you are correct or could be for a lock i need to investigate i got it home its actually in better shape then i thought, the chrome knob in front actually tilts blade and raises and lowers it with it pushed in you can adjust the angle and pull it out and turn to raise or lower or just the oppisite can't remember the date on the motor is 12-58

hole is probably for the power switch, not as pictured in the above post, though. I have seen only the toggle portion of the switch stick out thru the hole, with the electrical connections made inside an e-box, inside the saw. Works fine either way, looks better with the box inside the saw.

Great find. Go checkout the vintage machinery.org. You should be able to find the original manual for that saw.

I restore these and have never seen a hole there. Is it possible a previous owner did it? what is the model #? Look up the owners manual either at OWWM or searspartsdirect.com.
BTW, you ****, that looks like an OEM pedestal.

I don't know what the hole is for, but is the saw height adjustable on that stand? You know, like a drill press table?

You learned me something today...I was unaware that you could pull the handle out and turn to angle the blade. I just got my saw and have yet to use it or look it over good so thanks!

Now for the hole, I have seen a few Craftsman jointers that have been drilled for an on/off switch that was not factory. They were all relatively same area but obviously not manufacturer design or they would have been exactly the same spot. I'm thinking that either you got the famous saw from the website, or that was a common spot for people to add a power switch.

I looked the hole over good and it is not factory i think the guys dad probally had a toggle switch on there at one time Model 103.200002 but there is a gold one on vintage machinery with a hole in the same spot.
but this hole is not perfectly round and has a burred edge on back side does not look clean enough to be factory

Just picked this up yesterday at an estate sale. $50 for everything including the original ordering book (shown) and the book showing different uses and cuts.

Does anyone know what goes in the empty hole in the lower right corner of saw base?

Saw this similar Craftsman saw today and took this picture. I need to go back and talk to the guy about another deal and can take more pictures or check things more closely if you wish.
