Is a deadbolt inside position latch supposed to be horizontal or vertical when locked

Is a deadbolt inside position latch supposed to be horizontal or vertical when locked? Or does it depend on the brand? I'm thinking this is standard but I seen a few locks and see both horizontal and vertical positions when locked so as simple as this is I don't know if you can change this? I have kwikset belleview single keyed door set. My deadbolt inside positioned is vertical when locked.. I assumed it would be horizontal to show bolt was in?

Depends how the lockset was put together. Mine is set up so the handle is horizontal when it's locked.

I've set mine to "horizontal locked" as well.

Mine is horizontal when locked. Whether or not you can adjust it depends on how the connecting pieces of the deadbolt fit together.

Our new ones are vertical. The old ones are horizontal I couldn't figure out how to change the new ones to horizontal

Ok. Well I thought this was standard and its obviously not. I preferred horizontal because my last door was like that. I guess I'll have to get used to vertical.

LOL.. I was confuzzed about this until it dawned on me. You're talking about the thumb turn on the inside of the house. I kept thinking about the throw witch is actually inside the door... I know DUH! Hmm, Kwikset must have changed their setup, because traditionally they were always horizontal to indicate which way the throw of the bolt was.

Well I tried to turn the thumb turn but it has a half moon that will only allow it to fit one way. Think I'll call customer service tomorrow

Mones at 45 degrees toward striker when locked, 135 degrees away from striker when unlocked

kwikset is vertical and Schlage is horizontal. just bought a new set.

IHMO, get rid of the whole thing and replace it with a double deadbolt. The thumb latch just gives anyone that gets in an easy way out. Or in, if the door has glass in it.

this, mine are all double deadbolts. keyed on both sides. **** safety

Not much more than the rest of us here. I just got a bunch of them cheap on eBay.

I have glass in/around some doors, so I wanted double cylinder deadbolts. But I also wanted the convenience of an inside handle when I'm around. So I got double cylinder deadbolts with an inside "captive key". The key fits in the inside keyway, and looks like a handle. If you turn a key in the ouside 90 degrees and fiddle with it you can pull out the inside key. Otherwise it is stuck in there.

From the inside, you flip the inside handle/key 180 degrees to lock/unlock (horizantal pointed towards the jamb is locked, and away is unlocked).
From the outside, when you turn the key, it pushes the inside handle in a way that leaves it pointed straight up, whether you're locking or unlocking the door.
