Looking for mounting options for my Wilton C1. I'd like a floor mount and bolted to the floor. Would this Jet model for grinders be safe or no?

Not really if you plan to lean on it. That is going to be made of cast and pretty brittle. A column of welded steel (more ductile) would be better. Granted one shouldn't abuse their vise in the first place, so.

The problem is... it looks better than the bench.
Those are 8" lags into the 6" x 6" post.

That looks great. And that is why I try to not paint things, the surrounding items would look lesser in comparison. Then it would be a never ending battle of painting. :willy_nil

Ok thanks. I don't think I'd ever be hanging off of it with a breaker bar or anything so side stress would be a minimum.

Anybody know the length of the handle on the Craftsman 5196? I hate to ask Filson because he might still be in mourning and i feel for him so will leave him be or please measure and post if you are online because i'm trying to see if mine is original.

the ones i see on our thread and in the catalogs look shorter than the one i'm looking at. Yes i thought i found the "Holy Grail 5198 or even the 97" and my heart skipped a beat and i wasn't even close. it is still a cool vise and i'll post pictures if i decide to buy it.

Wrench: if you still own your 5197 and are not already on the road can you give me the length of yours that i already have saved a picture of?

I agree with zkling ... those cast iron bases and grinder mounts on the post are not very strong. If you have access to a welder, I'd head to your local metal scrap yard and pick out a nice post out of 4" schedule 40 pipe or 4" square tube with 3/16 or 1/4 wall and weld yourself up a great vice pedistal. You'll have it the rest of your life. Attached a few examples for ya ... the first 2 are one of my pedistals with a Willy 500S on top. The bottom two are creations by other members here. Cheers, Bill

Emmert patternmakers turtleback vise I came across in a Tennessee antique store. No cracks or missing parts. Labelled 'big heavy vise' so needless to say it was well under priced.

Debating to either leave it as is or clean, paint and prime... Love this vise!

I was just handling my 5196 an hour ago!! I took a revised inventory of my vises and that pig was in the way of a new one I picked up recently.

I'm no longer near that one but I can give you a measure of a 5191 which is a 4" fixed base of the exact same style. The handle measures 10 3/8" overall

I would clean the rust off and wax it so the rust stays away. From the pictures yours looks like a T4. If you write down all of the markings, you can get a ballpark date from mprime.com " the iron hand"

It also looks complete with the tilt adjustment clamp. Nice find!!!!!!

^ IMHO that is the best way to do it. Narrow column to minimize obstructions and lagged to the floor to prevent tip over.

Clik: great looking vise, but IMHO if there is a repair my investment for a tool drops usually below $100 unless its a 209 then i might pay $50 more.

sorry to have to ask twice, but does anybody that owns a Craftsman 5196 vise have a length of the handle to post or PM me with. thanks and trying to buy one and not sure if original or not. these handles look pretty small for this size of a vise.

Don't feel bad, its happened to most of us. This bullet was painted and worked fine, it sat in my garage for a month and when I opened the jaws, the threaded nut came busting out the back. That cost me $100
Here's another, like yours, I didn't notice it until I got home

Autopts,
What number is your H.B.Smith vise? with the broken tongue support on the main body. Would you be interested in parts? I have a 1 A H.B.Smith looks just like yours with a bad dynamic jaw. My static is not perfect but could be an easy fix.

Fresh from the flea market!

Picked up a Prentiss Bulldog #52 today to add to the collection. The ask was $20, beat him up a little and got it for $15.

Opens and closes well but I will give it a cood cleaning, thinking of taking down to raw metal and just keeping her oiled up.

Had the pleasure of meeting a GJ member yesterday, KMScott, and visiting his workshop. WOW.

Also picked up some awesome new jaws for the No200. I think the jaws will outlast the vise.

Thanks again, Kevin, it was great to meet you and spend time in your shop. I look forward to visiting again.

Actually I sold the Dynamic to Zoom along with the pipe jaws, you may want to IM him. Thanks for your offer.

I was at the mother in laws today picking up stuff for our garage sale Saturday, and she gave me a box of c clamps to bring home since she knows I love old tools.

When I looked in the box, I found a little bench clamp vise. She said it was her grandfather's vise, and it was on his workbench as far back as she could remember.

I believe it is an Athol No. 1 from what I can see, but would love any info someone here may have about it. I think it will be a great project to restore with my son, who just turned ten.

In efforts to try and post more project pics. With a fully charged camera battery I began working on this one.

1-2.) Before. I think it was the guy's painting/glue vise. Multiple layers of paint and the nut dovetail was full of semi hardened epoxy.
3.) After a heavy application of chemical stripper.
4.) Nasty ****** reared its head. :( Someone got a little overzealous with the drill.
5.) Welded up the divot and smoothed, a little polishing.
6-7.) As it sits this evening, had to cut the grass. Trying to decide on final paint color, full polish or just leave as is. I'm currently out of hi nickle filler so the divots in the main castings will have to wait. The slides on these are (I'm fairly certain) steel sheet, press bent. Thus welding with standard ER70 filler was no problem.

See I do actually use my tools, on occasion :p

Confirmed, and with that early of a patent date, I would NOT "restore" it except minimally. Treasure that old boy as it was probably your grandfather's, grandfathers vise... I'd estimate 125 + years old...

Clean the threads, CAREFULLY straighten the handle. Clean any loose crud and rust off and leave it be. I'd scrub with a nylon bristle brush and something benign like WD-40.

Fantastic find!

I was able to get some free time this afternoon so i could put the finishing touch on my Craftsman 05191 fixed base vise that has a born-on date of October of 1950

It might need a bit more work and one replacement screw but it looks great in

Thanks. I was really excited when I found it in the box.

My definition of restore is get it working correctly and remove the paint overspray if I can do that without a lot of heavy work. The jaws work fine but the bench clamp is a little stiff to turn.

Gipraw: yes i agree with Outlaw you have a gem there and in the family too. other than the bent handle which might be best left alone and you'll have great gramps handle he modified there is a chip off the back of the dynamic's slide. not sure there is a repair for that, but it shouldn't effect the use of your vise. can you share the jaw's width size and the weight or put a pop can with it? just saw your post after i posted mine. buy some TriFlow lubricant and put a little on the nut and the threads and your vise will work much better.

JasonJ: thanks for the measurement on the Craftsman 5196. at 10.5 inches for a 70 ish pound vise doesn't that seem small or maybe designed that way so you don't abuse the vise. anybody else have a 5196 to give me a quick measurement of the handle? BC's is too far back in his museum (thanks BC i just saw your post:thumbup:).

TBone: nice job negotiating if you only had $15 in your pocket and wanted to walk home with that vise. i would have hoped he took the $20 and have paid triple and up for similar ones. nice find.

Hunter: Kevin only shows snips of his shop and i bet it's awesome. nice jaws on your vise and did you see the turkey?

Zkling: helluva job saving that abused vise. you have talent when you use your tools that is for certain. just a quick question if you have epoxy or glue will the Electrolysis take that off too? i'd say paint unless you are going to continue to fill the holes or wax it up and use it.

VERY happy to hear this! :D

I've had great luck popping off over-spray droplets like that with the tip of a pocket knife. It's a little time consuming, but well worth it; I've even saved wood finished goods with the technique.

ps; Doug: what jaw size is that No 1? I have an Athol No. 10 that is a bench mount swivel (center bolt through the bench and a big wing nut on the bottom..) NO pat. date, and no info I can find on when mine was made. Mine has 2-1/16" jaws. I posted it about the 5th of April.

Dag Nabbit! Now I want my vise back from the powder coater more than ever! At least the next few days I'll be distracted while attending a motorcycle rally.

Nice job! Love the red and such a beautiful vise.

Didn't see the turkey, but I heard it outside. Too busy drooling over the "good" stuff inside.
