Made it out to look at the vises I posted earlier.
Turns out there were 3, not 2, I grabbed them all and an extra, everything together $130.

Just got them home, will give them a better look over tonight or tomorrow when time permits.


Smallest to biggest

This ones in ok shape, not used much, but paint is flaking, and no markings on it that I can find, yet.




This ones the worst shape, rusty, not used much either. But Made in England on it, and No 3 written on the dynamic jaw, leads me to believe it's a Record... but it is not written on it that I can find, yet.





The big one now, in not horrible shape, like the others needs some TLC. Still have to clean off that little plate to see what it says, and confirm who made it. The guy had the other piece of the jaw there, just missing the screws.






And the extra, I will make into a more upright, pedistle type of grinder.

That little one with the oversize anvil is likely an import, and the English one is a Record, or possibly Paramo.

balane, it's easy to see how you earned your reputation as a primo vise restorer -- that is absolutely beautiful work and you set the bar very high. I LOVE attention to detail and there's nothing like pics from 3 inches away to really show it off. I hope I **** half as much as you do when I get going on these.

I'm no expert, and there are many out there on the knife forums, but apple cider vinegar can do some cool things to carbon steel for next to nothing ($,£,€, etc...)

Beakie: i agree with Fretters that the little one is probably an older import. the middle one is probably a Record or it could be a Paramo and in that oval type circle might be the name and your answer.

the green one is more of a mystery, but looks European to me. the base is similar to my Polish vises and the upper parts of the vise almost looks like the German made ones. it does look fairly old so hopefully something on the brass badge or hidden under the dirt is some more markings or a name.

nice score and they all should work nicely for your shop. by the way i clicked on your picture to see if i could make it bigger and your entire Photobucket album came up. if that is what you intended? thanks for sharing or you can make several albums in Photobucket if that is what you are using for just vises or family or whatever.

I agree with you both re: little one, the large anvil is a bit of a tip off, no name, markings etc, enforce it.

The middle blue one, while it reminds me of a Record, the lack of a name, and the blank oval, I may have to look at Paramo's more closely to see.

I really wanted the green one for it's size. I have another comparably sized York 125A, but will have a few benches in the garage so why not have a few vises too.
I will keep looking into what it may be, and have a look at the badge to find some markings on it.

thanks for the feed back on the album. most anything I put in there is from my cell phone, which will be tool oriented, so I'm not to bothered by people having a look see if they find it.

I finally got my Craftsman 5196 parts back from the powder coater.... So I had to get the badge on it right away and get a teaser photo uploaded. Ill have more in a day or two... or maybe I will just trickle them in slowly. Is it ARREST-ME-RED enough?

pretty old, stamped into a brass plate one letter/number at a time it seems. very faint, caps and small case mixed, would be interesting to find the story of it's origins.

I am still cleaning it up. Something in the powder coating process really misses with any bare metal that you already cleaned, so now I have to clean it up again. Mainly just the slide. Should have all the pics up tomorrow about this time.

The Paramo's were clones of the Record's, so the styling, model designations should be exactly the same. They were a backup manufacturer of Record vices, apparently. Never seen a Paramo personally though, so one of their collectors would be better placed to mention if there were any subtle differences.

Woden had similar styling on a range of their vices, but their model designations were completely different. If that were a Woden, it would be marked 186B/3 or just B/3. The No.3 does suggest Record or a clone.

Heres an old girl ive had for years. Its heavy. It was given to me. I painted it with some left over paint I had. Ive not seen many Crawfords. This ones a 60. When I checked the internet about Crawford vises the only thing that came up was Cindy. I became less interested in bench vises.

Long time lurker, first time poster! I stumbled on this site after getting in to knife making and decided I wanted Made in the USA vise sometime in the spring of 2013 and now think I have at least 9 vises that I can remember. Thought I'd post a few photos finally!

Pictured: Craftsman w/5" jaws. Wilton (101028 marked 1969), Simplex Tool Co Utility No. 4 (Woon, RI), Ward Master Craft, Columbian Welded, Columbian No. 4, Wilton Cadet 9145 (this was welded together, trying to fix it up.), Brinks & Cotton 2" clamp and a post vise.

I have more/better photos but I finally rounded all these up in one place to post. Phew!

That is really interesting. I like the Milano lettering. Is it just me or does it seem like the "anvil" surface on that wilton is larger than most of their USA made counterparts?

Dismayed looks like you have some really nice vises. That welded columbian is interesting, probably a bit more ductile than the average cast vise, and it should be easier to repair if needed. I've often wondered why more companies didn't make plate steel vises.

Dismayed: welcome to Garage Journal and it looks like you will fit in nicely. you also came armed with some nice old vises. thanks for sharing. i also have a Rock Island 141 with that old swivel base and mine is numbered a bit different so i'm guessing yours is even older than mine.

Gert: glad you got that Italian Wilton and I bet it's not going far from one end of your bench because it's a beast. i think if i remember your thread you started on this you paid about a tenth of what it's worth unless there are a lot of them over on your side of the world we have yet to see.

Stripper: thanks for sharing and wish i didn't have to add shipping to the cost to own that awesome looking vise. maybe someone on here is close enough or owns a trucking company to grab it.

JJ: another awesome looking vise and your color choices are interesting too. you and Fretters should compare notes on perfecting the shades of purple on vises.

Does anyone have any knowledge of Marsland Vises? They were 'Made in Canada' but I am unable to find any information about them at all. I picked this one up for $25 a couple weeks ago.

A little teaser. I'm currently side tracked on an old Craftsman Block Grinder that I want to get running, so I can finish this guy:

An old Parker 203. It looks OK, but has a lot of cycles on it and is requiring a bit of "machining" to get it back in shape. It even has a chip in the corner of one of the jaws. When it comes to Parker jaws, there are options and then there are "Option$". More details to come.

That's a bit more purple than even I tend to lean to. Nice vice btw JJ.

Paint is a bit of a sore spot at the moment. Finally cracked open the fresh tin of Brunswick yesterday for painting the rest of the Drummond, and there's somewhat of a disparity between the colour of the last tin and this one. Prefer this latest batch though as it's darker, (it actually matches my expectation of Mid Brunswick Green), but there such a notable difference that it looks like I'm going to have to repaint all of the bits I did with the other tin, to get them looking owt like similar. Nowt in life's ever straight forward. One of those things where I could have done without the unnecessary extra work, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

Thanks guys lol, the school I work for colors are purple so I have lots of purple paint around. My big vise just says made in Canada on it. I think Hamilton had a big foundry where this ( and probably Dougs vise ) were cast.

It looked like it was a big vise with a swivel base. The price seems reasonable to me if there are no issues.

definitely looks similar, just the total lack of a "name" that has me stumped, not to mention both yours and another of mine has the "Hi-Duty" but this one doesn't. Ahwell, since I expect to put these to use, or gift them to friends & family, name doesn't really matter, just quality.

As for my other unidentified vise, here is the badge found riveted to it.


Pretty sure this is a previous owners "mark of ownership" if you will. I'll leave it on, maybe make up a story for those who ask about it.

Here she is in all her glory! Just to recap, this is what she looked like when I picked her up.

..... and here she is now! Bolted down with 12-Point Bolts stronger than Grade-8 Steel... she is mounted and not going anywhere.
