Hey all, I've enjoyed seeing the threads on here and figured I would finally join and start one for some advice. Building a 24by 24 detached garage, need 42" footings as I'm in Michigan. The prices I got for concrete work is anywhere from 7,400 to 9,900 dollars. Seems to be on the high side to me, like to know what you all think. Also have lumber package at 7,500, includes attic space above 10' by 24' and includes all siding, doors and such. Anyways thanks for any input you may have. Thanks, Mike. Oh and any ideas on things not to forget to do as I'm building the structure myself. Gas and 100 amp service is what I've come up with.

I would go over to the flooring forum.

I just remember contractors charge by the cubic feet...... something between $30 to $35 per cubic feet when they did my sidewalk 2 yrs back. unless you are pouring it your self and contact your own cement supplier they charge by the cubic yard or something. and it's lot cheaper.

the math matches

24*24*.5 (6 inch slab)=288 cubic feet *$30 gets you about $8500ish plus you have those footing....

Foundation for my 28X40 was $4500, this included footings and 48" wall
To pour the concrete floor 6" thick it was another 3600

You can find concrete calculators online. Figure out how much concrete you need then double that price for the labor. If you're using $4500 worth of concrete then the labor will be around $4500 give or take.

If you plan to have heat in your Michigan garage now is the time to consider the insulation you will use below grade - difficult to add later.

Those prices seem in the ballpark. Don't forget that cost can vary significantly based on the grade of concrete (strength being primarily a function of how much Portland Cement is in the mix, but also the aggregate and other admixtures). Are your bids actually comparing apples to apples?

In novi MI it was 17K to have my 30x48 done last year , with footers, and a 30x30 approach with 4000psi fibermesh 5"deep with wire, rebar and thicken pads for a lift.

I am doing a 24x24 in 2 weeks and the guy is charging me $3000 with 2 rows of blocks and anchors...my footers are like 12x18??? at the most, my building package is $4000.00 delivered with 4/2 trusses, vinyl, 1 garage door, 1 door & 2 windows. Looks like i am building the whole thing for the price you ae paying for concrete.

That about right I just got a quote for 22X30 attached to existing garage and both quotes came in at around $7500 that included hauling in sand for back fill. I'm in Maine

I agree, the price you were quoted is in the ballpark. I would try to get some references if you can. It is best to be able talk with someone who has had concrete work done by the company you are thinking about hiring to do the job, and it is even better to actually see some of the work they have done in the past. Now, obviously some companies are better than others, and some of the better concrete companies may charge a bit more for their work. All I am getting at is, it may be in your best interest NOT to go with the lowest bid.

One source that has not been mentioned is to call the concrete company (RediMix,etc) and ask them to recommend a couple of concrete finishers for quotes. They know who shows up and does good work and are probably not listed in Yellow Pages as they have all the work they need without advertizing.

We use to charge 5.50 sq ft labor for fresh concrete with no removal, and 6.50 sq ft for removal plus install of new. This changes per state/contractor though.
